Transfering Notes from MetaMap to MapNotes w/ Alpha possible????

Hello,

I have been using MetaMap. It has been giving me lots of errors lately and since it seems to no longer be supported/updated I was thinking about going back to MapNotes (which I only left because my husband and I party 95% of the time and thought we could use the party options in MetaMap.)

I have a lot of created notes in Meta Map and was wondering if anyone new a way I could transfer those to MapNotes. I would really hate to lose all that info I have wroked on.

Assuming you're using "MapNotes (Fan's Update)"

then it has a slash command available for importing notes from MetaMap :

/MapNotes_Import_MetaMap
If you want to move from MetaMapNotes to MapNotes, then log in to the game with both AddOns enabled, use the above command, after which you will receive notification in the chat window on how many notes have been imported; Then log out, and disable MetaMap. Don't try to use MapNotes at the same time as MetaMap for any other purposes, as the results may be unpredictable


Note that this slash command was implemented and tested something like a year ago, and hasn't been updated, so I can't guarantee it will work atm.
But there's no harm in trying, unless you have already made new MapNotes that you don't want to lose ;)

If it isn't working, then let me know, and I'll have another look at fixing it.

Thanks, Telic! I had the same question as Athenea and was already thinking about changing to your mod. Now that I know it will work, I will off course. :wink:
I only have the problem, that my maps don't show up in instances, which is probably only a bug with the German client, and I don't use all of the components, because Notesuneed, FastQuestClassic, and Gatherer do a far better job than the MetaMap components do.

Mmm, as you've mentioned Instance maps, I should just add a reminder that obviously, the game doesn't normally have Instance maps :wink: - so any notes created on MetaMap Instance maps can't be "imported" in to MapNotes (Fan's Update) - only the WorldMap zone notes will be imported.

MapNotes (Fan's Update) (http://wowui.incgamers.com/?p=mod&m=3361) does allow the creation of notes on Instance maps in both Atlas, and/or AlphaMap. :grin:

However, all these AddOns use slightly different, custom made Instance maps, so trying to import MetaMap Instance notes in to Atlas Instance MapNotes for example, would not be that useful as all the notes would 'probably' be out of position. :sad:

( Although its easy to move MapNotes notes by <Ctrl><Alt>-Left click dragging :wink: )

I put off replying to you for a bit to see if everything would go smooth and it has-nothing buggy at all about the transfer. I really appreciate your reply.

New ?? my hubby is talking of a new computer- how do I make sure all my precious mapnotes get transferred over with the new machine?

You could just copy the \WTF\ folder from the World of Warcraft game directory on the old computer, to game directory on the new computer...this will copy all of your game settings, and all of your AddOn settings and data to the new game.

But to be explicit, the MapNotes database is :

[World of Warcraft game Folder]\WTF\Account\[ACCOUNT_NAME]\SavedVariables\MapNotes.lua


Its ALWAYS worth taking periodic backups of the \WTF folder, as game crashes can result in loss of AddOn data - I had a "blue screen of death" in Windows Vista recently, and lost a few notes, but my backup saved me a lot of swearing :wink:
