I may be completely wrong on this, but doesn't the race of the NPC that gives you a quest play into this? Say a Dranei gives me a quest, would that not give me rep towards Exodar? Now you've got me thinking and I too want answers, lol

Thats a fair point, I have never really noticed if thats how it works. Will need to do a couple of quests and see if thats what happens.

You can see the faction which the NPC belongs to under his name in the bottom right corner. If you turn in a quest, you gain reputation with that faction.

Area's are a nice guideline, but have no other effect on the faction which you gain rep with. Same with race, actually: nice guideline, but not more than that. Not all races belong to the same faction.

The only way to be sure is to check the faction under the name of the NPC.

Why have I never bothered to even look for that? Lol, well there's our answer, thanks snowieken :)

All you have to do is complete all quests in the starting Human area of Elwynn Forest. After completing all quests there I think you should be honored. If not just continue into Westfall. I am not sure if Westfall gives you honor with Stormwind. Also, I think that you can turn in Wool for honor with Stormwind.

Westfall gives you honor with Stormwind yes. Humans have it easy, I was exalted long before 40.

Remember there is reputation-bleedthrough as well. I don't remember the specific relations, but it's something like:
Getting 200 Ironforge rep gives you 50 Stormwind rep too.

See this page (http://www.wowwiki.com/Reputation):

"Most quests for an Alliance or Horde faction will give full reputation gain for that faction, and one quarter of that reputation gain for the other factions on that side. For example, a quest completed for a Stormwind NPC will give 250 Stormwind reputation and 62.5 reputation for the other Alliance factions."

Menethil Harbor quests will also often give SW faction.
