I have an ATI x300/x550 (i know, its a lesser card but it has always been fine for me) paired with a 20" widescreen monitor that has a 1680x1050 native resolution.
When I run at that rez ,wow and my desktop both have the same issue. On the edge of the left side of the screen there is a small amount of flickering. Not black and white flickering, but more of a corrupt looking signal flicker.
If I change my res to 1280x1024 or lesser the issue goes away. On my old 17" crt I never had this issue either.
I have the newest ATI catalyst drivers.
Am I simply asking too much of this economy video card?

No, you aren't asking too much of the card. It can handle this resolution easily.
Did you connect your screen via digital or analogue connector? If avaliable, use the white digital connector, it should have a much better image quality and flickering should not occur.
You can also try to adjust your refresh rate, preferably 60hz. TFT screens usually don't flicker like the CRTs, so 60hz is fine and pretty much standard.

60hz..and i'm using the standard connection... my card and monitor do have the (hdmi?) connection but I don't have a cable for that...
Do you think that would help? I was always under the impression that it made little if any difference.

Yeah, it helps a lot to improve image quality, but it doesn't necessarily solve your problem. If you know someone who would lend you such a cable, give it a shot. I'd have a bad feeling though if you went and bought one of these cables and your image problems persist.
Is there some sort of Auto-Adjust button on your Screen? Or one that lets your shift the image to the sides? That might also help.
Cheers

Yes, but neither help. I think i'm going to hook it up to one of my other computers and see if I get the same result.
It isn't enough to really bother me, but I'd like to cure it if possible.
If it does it on another machien I know its hte monitor, i can take it back and exchange it.
If it does not, i know i need to get a new video card. I need to get an nvidia anyway, it seems like ATI is always having some sort of issue.

I can live with it, I've played hours and hours with it already. I believe when I get a new video card it will go away. I'm going to test it over the weekend but haven't yet.

I had a small glitch like this, but after I replaced the monitor it was no longer a problem. But it could easily be the card too, which'd be no real shame considering it's worth. At least it served you well up to now, which is the best you can ask of any technical product.

And for reference there's basically no perceivable difference between VGA and DVI.

It will be a foolproof test when I hook it up to a different machine. I have 15 days to return the monitor, i'll just exchange it for another if the monitor actually has an issue.
As is, it works just fine... been raiding for hours without any issues thus far.
Can you even notice it here?

Depends on your hardware, but the image is sharper and better adjusted when using a DVI connector. Good monitors display a better VGA image than budget ones.
