What is a Troll,I know Dumb Question

I know this is a dumb question but i've heard this "Term" before and I can't figure it out, hehehe

WHat is a troll when it is said to someone in a thread i.e. are you a troll?

I actually use the latter part of that definition, more than the former...If something is said MERELY to start controversy, they are a troll....

The info might be opinion, or whatever, but said merely to start a battle....heh

You'll have to take that further. To be a true troll you cannot have stated an opinion and/or fact. A troll throws out something that is controversial for no other reason than to cause trouble.

Somebody such as myself (with my wildly unpopular views on many subjects) cannot possibly be a troll because I always state what I believe. Even though what I post may be something that at first glance appears to be a troll, it's not. You'll have to learn the difference in due time.

Correctly...the word is trawl for fish, but yes..a forum troll is one who enjoys inciting people for reactions. Kind of like the child who will do anything to garner attention. Trolls revel in anonymity and can often be found on the official WoW forums posting under lvl 1-5 alts on other servers.

Below is example of my server's favorite troll in action.... everything below is a quote from him...not me:

The problem with runetotem horde is that the only thing you have to be proud of is your epics. Your gear you got handed to you just for showing up to raid. It sucks that I get laughed at or spit on everywhere I go when I am on this toon, but I guess it sucks even worse for you people that do it. Just remember, it is cool to do what everyone else is doing, whether it's spitting on Sethis, or smoking crack or meth.

Keep looking at yourselves in the mirror, and repeating, "I am single, but I have epics, so I'm awesome cause that makes me good at one video game. "

Keep spam healing yourselves in org admiring your own gear. Maybe someone other than me will see what a *%@*ing, idiotic dork you look like doing it.

Actually, to troll for fish, is different from trawling for fish.

Trawling for fish is a large scale fishing solution using a net or a line with multiple bait lines.

Whereas to Troll is to fish for or in with a moving line, working the line up or down with a rod, as in fishing for pike, or trailing the line behind a slow-moving boat.

Troll can also be a noun used for the actual bait used to lure fish, so its possible that troll was originally used to refer to the actual Post (rather than the Poster)...
i.e. its the lure for baiting people
