Technically, WoW does work in Vista but there have been many, many, many reports of it acting strange or not working at all. If you have the option between XP or Vista to run WoW, i would strongly reccomend XP.

Vista is still an infant OS, and still has many bugs to be worked out. At least wait until Vista Service Pack 1 is released before switching.

I played WoW for a week on a Vista laptop, worked like a champ.

Yeah thats exactly what makes the WoW on Vista problem so bizarre. Some systems will run it fine, some will act like armageddon is coming and fry.

If someone is on XP and thinking about upgrading to Vista, I ask them what they are hoping to gain. If those thing are stability, reliability, or compatibility, I advise them to stick with what they have. XP is going to be a viable gaming platform for the next two years at least. I'm probably going to skip Vista on my main machine, and when I do upgrade in the future, I'll be getting Windows 7, due out next year. Unless something I get radically needs Vista, but so far I've had no lost opportunities or having to pass up anything to stay with XP, far from it. On Vista, I would be able to use less of my old game collection, hardly a positive factor for trading in.

Eventually Vista will be better, this is nearly inescapably probable, but that time isn't now. I don't advise people to jump on unnecessarily when everything they desire for works on XP fine; and I've yet so see a single game, even those coming out next year, with a DirectX 10 only mode, forcing people to Vista. There just is no reason other than being new and enjoying a whole new (Read "New" as "Buggy") experience.

LOL, Windows 7 next year? Kalos, when was Longhorn originally scheduled for release? If 7 makes it to retail by next year, i will GIVE you my first born.

(absolutely no faith in Microsoft's development team :P)

If you have a top-end machine and are technically competent (i.e. you can build and repair your own machine and know how to troubleshoot) then Vista is an excellent OS.

Considering the above, I run it at home and I love it. But it causes me lots of hassle at work with people trying to get our software working due to the default security settings on it which they don't really understand.

That is not to say that I'm putting the blame on the user, but it is true that if you know what you're doing and are prepared to put a bit more time in getting it how you want it then with Vista it has some nice benefits over XP.

Worked fine here - I installed it and patched it on two new PCs using Vista and had no problems at all. One or two minor things have to be done a bit differently, addons, f'rinstance, but other than that, it's been no different from the XP we ran it on before.

I run both Vista and XP at home (Computer\Network Engineer) and tbh I haven't had any issues. Sure when it was released last year is was a complete p.i.t.a. but for the last 8 months or so it's been a dream.

FYI the reason I run it over XP is the >3gb support, I have 4gb in my rig and XP64 just doesn't cut it, no proper software\driver support for it compared to Vista64 (and I own all the different variants of XP\Vista due to a Technet Plus subscription). I have a laptop running Vista32 SP1 without issue as well.

Oh and both my desktop and laptop run WoW without issue.

One final thing that I have to get off my chest is people *****ing about how flaky Vista is, having worked with it for over a year now I know how bad it was this time last year, unfortunately a lot of those people who denigrate Vista are people who haven't used it recently and are generally basing it on year old reviews\experiences.

Here's the super secret to using Vista "run as administrator".

WoW was working fine till the 2.3 patch hit, then it wouldn't load and i had problems in the game. Right clicking the game and chosing run as admin solved all the problems.

I had trouble with vent too, but the trusty "run as admin" solved those problems too.

I dont mind running Vista except for the constant use of 'run as administrator' which is tedious (why should i run as admin to use my task manager - i know what im doing Microsoft!) Aside from that the on real issue I have is even with 4gb ram the damn thing still wants more! Vista is much more of a ram whore than XP which i dont personaly see as 'stable.' Though i do find the occasional 'There is no error message for this error' pop up to be amusing. Though i could go on all day - wireless on Vista is a pain if you go from secured to unsecured or switch encryption type at locations... All in all Vista is really less about the critical issues as it is the numerous annoyances. I do however HIGHLY suggest Ultimate over Home. The critical issues I had in Home were almost all fixed with the upgrade to Ultimate.

Note: Its generally assumed that XP runs 20% faster than Vista - though im not sure how well this holds up or will in the future.

Wait a second....

Who's spreading all these lies about Vista being able to run programs? I thought it was just there to try and look pretty! I didn't know it was actually supposed to do something!

Just out of curiosity those who do the whole 'run as administrator' thing, do you also have UAC running? I haven't had to run anything as an Admin (partly because I am the admin (well in the admin group)).

Ayup, Vista is a RAM pig. I tried to run WoW using 1g of RAM, and while that would have been enough on XP, with Vista it constantly lagged out. The thing I hate about Vista is that it's constantly pinging the hard drive for no good reason. It's been "stable" for me in that it hasn't given me the BSOD, but the memory-hog aspect is extremely annoying.

2G is what anyone should really have for Vista.

Look around, you can stop the hd thing with a simple registry fix.

Also, a friend of mine just recently switched back to XP and said that it made his latency better by ten-fold.

Has latency been an issue with Vista?

I don't experience any latency issues with anything else (other games/XBOX LIVE/Downloading content/pr0n/etc.) yet with WoW, I'm constantly in the 300+ latency range.

Could that also have something to do with my server?

We installed it on two new desktops here at the end of October and it's been problem-free. Works well, does all it's supposed to, and has caused no trouble at all.

No latency issues here at all. Have you downloaded the most recent drivers for Vista for your motherboard/NiC card?
