Hi all,
I've just bought a nice 24" widescreen (not arrived yet) and I'm going to have to upgrade my current GPU (x1950 pro) to take proper avantage of the 1920x1200 native resolution.
I have a budget of around £200 and was looking at the 8800GT or 8800GTS - would I really need the GTS for WoW?
Cheers in advance

At these resolutions I would recommend one of the 8800 series, the 8600 doesn't do so well under higher res settings, But the X1950 should manage fine, it's a good card and it benchmarks reasonably well at this resolution in most games. I'd say to give it a try with your current graphics card, if you decide you need to upgrade the quality, go for an 8800 or 9600.

Yep...but which 8800? The GT or GTS?
There's not many reviews of either card at the higher resolutions that I'm after - would the GTS extra power be worth the extra £40?

In my opinion the GTS isn't worth it, it might be in a week's time. Prices are rejigging right now due to the 9600's launch, it'll be a while before it is clear who will be better under the pricing scheme that emerges. The GT is better for value right now, and probably will stay that way.
To be honest, they're so close cut the difference won't be visable in WoW.

Fair enough...you've just saved me £40 - I owe you a pint :)

Just a quick update (if anyones interested?). My screen arrived and looks immense. Im running it at the full 1920x1200 on my lil' ol' x1950 pro maxed out with no problems at all.
Framerate has dropped slightly (floats between 30-55) but its perfectly playable, and my second screen is running fine aswell.
So...I think I'll hold off for a while and wait for the nvidia 9 series to push the price of the 8 series down :)

Ah good. Thought the X1900 Pro would hold it, somewhat similar to the 7900 that card is. Certainly not the furtherest card in the pack away from the current top end designs.

Dont know if anyone will ever read this but here's an update.
I won the incgamers Imperium Romanum competition and my spanking new (and free) 8800 GTX arrived this morning - rock and roll!!!!!
On a side note, does anyone know why the nvidia control center will not save the 1920x1220 resolution for my 24" monitor (it reverts to 1680x1050 on bootup)?
To get it to run at 1950x1200 I have to set a custom resolution - which doesn't work but then puts the slider up to 1920x1200 in the "change resolution" menu which I then can select.
Bit of a pain.

What drivers are you using and what refresh rate have you set?

Latest drivers (169.21) and 60 hertz.
It looks like a known issue thats been bugging the 8800 series for a while - there's a few posts about it dotted over the interweb. Seems to be related to using a DVI cable rather than a VGA one.

Certainly not an issue that's affected me at all, running dual 8800 gtx oc2's on a 24inch Benq monitor without issue for months (on DVI).

And you are def seeing 1920x1200 as a resolution option?

Definitely mate, my desktop pictures are all sized to 1920x1200 and I have been building my own pc's for years now (I built my first Cyrix based pc years ago, that might give you an idea of how long I have been doing it).

I think it's something to do with the monitor not sending its native res to the 8800 gtx correctly. Or at least thats what everyone else with this problem seems to think.
Cheers anyway - guess I'll just wait and see if nvidia fix it with a driver update.

You might want to have a look over on www.guru3d.com for some newer drivers, not sure what OS you're using but I have both XP and Vista64 working without any issues on that resolution.
