Well, aren't you too?
The forums is filled with noobs that think they're always right.
The forum is filled with keyloggers that will randsack your toons at night.(or in the morning)
The forum is filled with so called 1337 players that spit on any OP they disagree with and every post they make ends with "L2Pnoob".Yeesh. They're worse than hostile murlocs.
Some players suck up to the devs, while others just do the same with the classic "L2Pnoob"
I never tried to post anything there because I was really afraid to be spit upon on my 1st post.
People here are really nice. It's like walking around Elwyn forest with all those hostile wolves and Defias dead and didn't repop.

True, but there is a lot of good info to be had there as well, It's just hard to find it sometimes. Don't discount them completely. If you can take the time to sort it out, there are some people there that really do know what they are talking about.
I've never gotten a keylogger there but I don't follow random links in people threads either.

The disadvantage of the official forums is that you have to interact with jerks and idiots.
The advantage of the official forums is that you get the option to act like a jerk or an idiot.
In this respect, they are not entirely unlike PvP realms, with flaming instead of ganking.

Yes, I've been reading many threads in those forums. Just lurking around for new info.
Even the good threads are being flamed. Whats wrong with these people?
Can't players voice their opinions without getting spiteful comments?
Hell, even the spammers don't get much flame.

Just lurk and read and take what you want from it all. Don't go to any links' don't stick your head up to be bashed. It's not fair, I know, but that's the way it is over there.

I avoid the official forums like the plague. The amount of revolting drivel to sift through in order to find the one gem worth while, would be like trying to find a diamond in a sewage pit.
Fortunately, my roommate apparently enjoys inflicting this torture on himself (and yes, he totally agrees about the sentiments you gave above), and looks for those few good things. That way, I can find out the good stuff, without needing to sift through the bad.

I've only seen a little good info, and a lot of flaming on them. So I discounted them years ago, and I don't bother. If there is anything important from them, I'll find out second-hand. There is too much manure to sift through to make it even remotely worth it for me.

Nope. I think there is a certain maturity level which simply does not exist on those forums. As well as a complete lack of respect and total disregard for other posters there. Ok, I have seen maybe one out of every 100+ posts actually have decency in it, but it gets overwhelmed by the ego-centric superiority based comments made by people who believe they have the right on those forums to attack and criticize anyone else on them.
Honestly, those forums should be glad I'm not a CM or moderator on them...I'd start issuing sweeping bans until people went back to being at least a mediocrum (sic) of civilized.

I think that's the policy my roommate has for them. Me, I'll stick here -- I get better, more mature discussions on this forum than the official forums, and the news on this site is typically either ahead of, or more detailed than the official wow page anyway too.

It's too bad you don't like the official forums at all... yes they're filled with some nasty people who love to speak in 1337 741k...
But IT is the only place to find out DEV's answers to questions and so far I love my servers chat and have yet to find any of the uber1337 n00b pwnrs there...
I hope you can find some of the nice parts of the forums...

One thing about those forums I find rather strange is that they leave keylogger/phisher threads alive without nuking the links. The most infamous of those are the "Best looking women" ones. Any self respecting red blooded male teenager would find it very difficult not to click the links to see "teh pr0n" ;)

The signal to noise ratio on the official forums is pretty bad, especially the American ones (I think because that's the best place to find dev responses, it's also the best place to find people screaming blue murder and trying to get said devs' attention whenever something doesn't go their way), but there are also a couple of informational goldmines. I wouldn't say they deserve avoiding completely, but I probably wouldn't bother to post much, if at all, there either.
I tend to keep an eye on the class forums, my realm forum and my battlegroup forum, which is where most of the interesting stuff crops up. Apart from that you're probably best off just looking at sites like this one and some of the popular theorycrafting forums. Areas like the official forums' general discussion section are an absolute cesspit, and their existence can safely be forgotten.

The Dev posts end up in th blue trackers, like this site has. My server's forum is filled either with constant whining, holier-than-though superiority complex-based raid guild members trashing anyone else, or the PvPers doing the same. Along with others from other realms in our battlegroup coming in to attack anyone who sports our server's name under their graphic.
There is such a thing as being able to completely write off the official forums, yet still being able to find out what the devs, CM's, etc. are up to.

I'm in WoW with a one month free from buying some set in retail, so I can't get on the official boards for another week yet, but I'm counting the days. If you allow yourselves to sink to their level it's VERY therapeutic. In my EQ2 days some guy set up EQ2flames and it's now more popular than the Sony boards :)
You guys are great and this place is in my favorites, but don't dismiss the value of giving a noob a good flaiming :)

I know what you're saying. It's nice to be able to say what you really feel sometimes. I'm not a wuss and I don't get my feelings hurt so it's not a big deal to me.

And yet, I'm still at a loss. How is treating someone else like crap in any way something appealing? I mean, I look at such things along the lines of "would I want someone to do that to me", and if I get a "no" from that, then... it just isn't something I prefer to do. So I'm honestly baffled at the notion of going there with the intent to attack others...

Ok, I'll give you an example. I used a non PC word on this forum and got reprimanded. That's fine, I'm in someone elses' house when I'm here and I'll follow the rules. But I hate holding back what I really want to say. I'm not PC and I love to make PC libs really mad.
I don't really pick on them, they just get pissed off at my nature.
It's fun and liberating to not hold back and say what you really mean. I don't know of any other way of explaining it if you don't get it. But rest assured, it is fun for me and others.

I can understand wanting to make sure you are understood, but I'd rather if it was something done tactfully and politely, remembering that it is other human beings you are talking to. It falls back to the "what would my reaction be if someone said that to me..." kind of thing. Responsibility for what you say, and how you say it, is part of what makes a discussion mature, and allows a topic to be discussed. Failure to accept that kind of responsibility, or treating others with decency and respect due to human beings, is one of many things that makes it become immature, and degrades into flamewars and the like, all of which accomplish nothing but getting emotions all flared up, and prevents the topic from really being discussed.

Its not about PC or non-PC, its about being respectful. If we met at the coffee shop, how would you conduct yourself?
People use the internet as an excuse to be rude and talk to people in a way that they would not if we were face to face.
Most of the discussions that I have seen on the official forums are not things that people would say to each other in an actual conversation. I have no interest in taking part in that type of idiocy.

More often, IMO, they just don't realize the tone that their words imply....They forget that the fact that they are smirking or smiling at their desk isn't communicated to the reader.

If you post well worded, thoughtful posts then most often it is replied to in a normal manner.

I suppose that would depend on your definition of getting flamed. If someone disagreeing with you, and continuing to do so for 3 pages is flaming, then thats true. But thats not what I consider flaming.
The mods here don't let people get flamed. You don't see posts of "OMG u n00b" in these forums ever. You do see them in the official forums, with disturbing freqency.

And I think this is an example of why these forums are better. If someone is ignoring you, it means that they don't want to get into a flame-war with you. I can respect that. I'd rather be on someone's ignore list than have them arguing with me every time I post because we don't see eye to eye.

By flamed I mean people posting derogatory photos about you, hasn't happened to me yet on the officials while it has happened here.
Thats what I mean by flaming.
As far as a disagreement goes, I don't expect anyone or everyone to agree with me. What I state is my own opinion, and in most of my posts I usually add some sort of verbage such as "imo" or "from my experience" which is my attempt to convey my own experiences.
By no means do I believe what I say is "right" it is simply my experience in the game or how we do things.
Just as others are scared of the officials, I post there nearly as often as I post here with about the same amount of flaming if not a little less.
No offense to either board, it just isn't as bad as people make it out to be.
You put garbage into your posts, your going to get garbage back...thats how the officials work.

It's not that Im being intimidated by them, it's more of the fact that I'll get somekind of aggravated feeling when you made a really subtle post on the forums, only for it to be joked about or flamed around just because the other posters refuse to acknowledge its intent or importance.
It'll be like working on a thesis, and when you submit it, the lecturer will reject it just like that, if it's not up to par according to his own standards...oh the pain...
A forum is supposed to be a place where you can have a civilized talk on subjects, whether it be with your friends or complete strangers.
There are several other forums that are similar to the official wow forums.
Every time I try to make a general debate, I get flamed, spit, and my point of view is dismissed. My threads in these types of forums usually has at least 5-6 spits, 20-ish casual chatters who obviously just spam just to get their posts up, and some ends with a go suck a %&*#( flamer. If I'm lucky, the other saintly debaters post to back up on me.
And then there are times when people call me an attention whore. Lolwut? I'm making a perfectly legit topic for a debate. If I wanted attention, I would make a blog, which I’m too lazy to make one.
When I want to make a thread to voice out my opinions or views, I welcome flames with reasons. But I just cant understand why the hell people love to flame me just because they disagree(with no reason). WTF?! And then I decided to give up after 100 spams in my debate....>.>
I fail to see any way those are correct, that it is even remotely appealing to do those kinds of things. It is just completely and utterly foreign to me to treat others like crap, especially intentionally.
Exactly. You'd think that these tech savvy people actually learn ethics and manners when they were lvl 1, or in other forums, when they 1st started registering.
Why is it so hard for people to make civilized conversations on the internet? And when the other person is losing, he/she starts spouting personal attacks at me with lots of cuss, claiming that im just looking for attention. Ugh..

Dev is short for Developer. Some people mistakenly believe that all blue posts are developers, but they aren't. Most are community managers, who basically are customer service representatives. A few are developers.

Heh, the typical attack isn't once you click the link, it is if you download things from that link. That said, if you use Internet Explorer, it is possible to get something installed on your system without you knowing, and all you need to do is load the webpage/follow the link. I've tested, and still found that particular security flaw in the latest IE's even.... despite constantly telling Microsoft it exists... repeatedly.

Precisely the main problem I've seen. There is no room for intelligent debate on the official forums. Just maybe an occasional decent post, followed by derisive drivel.

I can understand kids being whiny insensitive jerks but teens and adults?
people feel that they can be as crude and cruel as they want without repercussions. Internet anonymity and all that.
Sorry If I replied a little too late, I was fending off some spammers talking about burgers in a different Debate forum, and I got dc yesterday :(
They really love to make irrelevant posts every time I try to re-explain my points.
Btw, why can’t I quote? Every time I try to quote, bold or something, the next page won’t load, and I can’t view the forums for a good ½ hour…
Not sure why you can't quote... strange.

Like so many other "official" forums for other games the WoW forums have really become the last place I will go for information or help.
In some ways I am stuck because at work they block most of these sites, but I am lucky to be able to come here since this is by far the best forum I have found.
When I have gone there and looked around I see the occasional good question being asked and then the thread goes to crap within the first three posts.
Forums become a direct reflection of the community that is allowed to take residence there. This becomes the moderators and the folks who created the forum's responsibility to maintain. This forum is a great example of this. If you do something that is uncalled for or against the rules of this forum then you are asked to stop or ultimately leave. This makes people either stop and act more civilly or it makes them go elsewhere for their fix of 'im teh win!!1! u teh fail!111!!' posts.
rgirty - You will find conflict, opposing views and ultimately flames anywhere but if they are done intelligently or with at least a little forethought then they are a hell of a lot better then some of the retorts I have seen from the official forums like 'Oh Yeah! Well I pwned ur mom last night!!! lawlz!'
Just my opinion. Personally this is the only forum I find that is worth spending the time on.

What exactly are you clicking/doing?
It's not supposed to do that, but I've noticed that different boards handle bb code differently. Once such a board that I frequent doesn't allow for titles in links. Bit annoying, when you're trying to, say, link the wikipedia page of Fabio, because they haven't got a clue as to what that is.

Testing quote. I hope this gets through. If it does, does the error only happen when I make a long post?

Went through fine. I think it might then be the multiquote bit which is a bit wonky. Hardly ever used it myself. I usually just copy the first quote tag and stick that in front of the next section I want to quote and then close the quote tag again.
Also use multiple tabs if I want to quote multiple people in one post.
Might want to give that multiquote another whirl and if it's still a problem, then PM Elly about it.
Feel free to use this message to experiment with.

The official forums is like being touched by that strange neighbor when you where 4 years old.
No. Not even remotely.
I see you were being facetious here, and please understand I am not trying to come down on you but there is nothing on the WoW boards that even remotely compares to child molestation. Again, I understand you were trying to make a point that the Official boards are typically filled with crummy posters but I think a more appropriate analogy would have gotten your point across as well. There are some topics that will forever remain ultra-sensitive to particular individuals.
I fail to see any way those are correct, that it is even remotely appealing to do those kinds of things. It is just completely and utterly foreign to me to treat others like crap, especially intentionally.
I am usually a kind courteous person, although I have more than the usual flaws and I have occasionally been tempted to be a bit rude and sarcastic on the O-boards. In fact, I did comment once on the apparent irony of someone who would not stop flaming another poster for some minor spelling error, meanwhile his own posts were filled with that moronic "leet" speak. Hard to come across as the spelling police when one spells "what" as "wat" and "you're" as "Ur"....
Ultimately though, such things are a waste of time. While it was a bit gratifying to take the wind out of spelling police guy's sails (ok, once in a blue moon I do have a bit of a mean streak), in the end it served no purpose and I should have just ignored it. Which leads me to this....
you can't ignore on the official forums, rgirty, to my knowledge.
Actually, next to each poster's avatar on the right there are two small little icons. One is to see all posts by that user and the other is to toggle on/off the ability to ignore that particular poster. I find it invaluable the few times when I read my realm forums as I have a good idea whose posts I am uninterested in reading.

*Raises eyebrow*
*grumbles*
*unhooks banhammer*
Which is what they need to do on the Official Forums as well.
:evil2:
Truth in jest. If the officials were moderated properly (which would be very labour-intensive, I suppose), they'd be a lot better. As it is, they're just sewers of adolescent smack talking, where the occasional gem floats past as a freak event.
The moderation here is what makes these forums as useful as they are- even if the mods are well-known as eaters of kittens who enjoy listening to nothing but boy bands :-)

Would you lighten up? I'd hate to watch an episode of Family Guy with you.

Did you even read my post?
There was nothing in my post that was antagonistic, I clearly said I understood he was trying to make a point and that I wasn't trying to come down hard on him. Just because someone doesn't share the same sense of humor as you doesn't mean they lack a sense of humor.
I made the distinction between someone who posted something I didn't agree with and making a personal attack on someone. Maybe you could do the same?

I was just suggesting that you lighten up, or in other words don't take things so seriously. You'll be happier that way. You seem a little grumpy and irratable.
I bet you do have a sense of humor, but not that kind that would enjoy Family Guy who makes referances to child molestation a lot (among other things). It's funny!
