just wondering, when it says 30 days remaining on mail, what exactly does happen to it once it goes over the 30 days?

It's returned to sender.
...unless it is an auction you won or that expired...then it is pretty much lost for you.
And if it stays for 30 days returned to the sender it is destroyed

so if you say, went on holiday and just before you put something on auction for say, 2000g and someone bought it, you didn't open your mail for 30 days, is there no possible way of getting it back?

uhhh.....surely you are suggesting a hoypothetical.....
"No possible way" isn't what you asked originally.....There are always ways.....You just have to ask the right person properly.

ok, so they would get it back for you or would they just say its my fault for being ignorant. Sorry this is just for arguments sake :)

Sorry, can't read a GM's mind -- you'd have to ask. And, presentation of your situation might be extremely important as to getting an outcome you want. What I mean is, use tact, explain the problem thoroughly and politely, and maybe you will get help.

So, it hasn't happened, and you want to definitively know if you can put a 2000g item on AH and go away, then come back 30+ days later and get your gold/item back.....
Nobody here will know that for sure, unless they are a closet GM.
But, you now know that it would be a less than optimum plan to do it intentionally.... ;)

A friend of mine had an auction for about 450g. When he opened his mail there was some sort of internal error and the mail/gold was lost. He petitioned a GM whose response was, sorry it is lost and there is nothing we can do. So I imagine, if you just let an auction expire their response would be similar.

to be honest its a bit silly to put something on for 2000g if you KNOW youre going on holiday for a MONTH.

It would be rather silly. Lucky this is only hypothetical eh? :)

I left the game for a few months last year, and when I came back I realized that I had about 500G worth of auction items that I had forgotten about. They were gone.
@corga - I took nine weeks vacation last year...afforded it, and loved every minute of it...

Why not just clear out your auctions before you go on vacation to avoid losses? If you pay regularly, or are planning to go on vacation, then you should know when you will no longer be able to recieve mail. There really isnt much excuse for lost mail unless you're ignoring your mailbox or quitting the game.

also, thats pretty ignorant. at least our military is smart enough to not overextend itself and deplete our nation's resources and money.

No its not gone forever contact a GM stating your case and they can look back into you mail logs because they document it all.

If only you had an inkling of what *that* meant, in time, manhours, etc. Most likely the answer, if that was the case would be "hell no".

Then again, you could invoke one of your three item restore privileges to get it back, if it were truly important.
I mean, let's say you had your auctions up. Hurricane hits, phonelines go down for x amount of time, you could conceivably lose your mail that way. Sometimes things do happen beyond your control, and you'll end up having to deal with the aftermath.

Sure enough, but there is a difference between that and just being too lazy to prevent problems you could have (and should have) from happening, and feeling you are entitled to Blizzard catering to your every whim because of it.
However, the item restores are basically Blizzard's allowing for people to make mistakes, but not abuse the system by placing a limit on it.
