Ok, so I've been gone from WoW for almost a year, and I've been trying to get myself updated on all the changes as quickly as possible. In doing that, I've decided that I want to level a new class to 70, but I'm a bit lost on which one I should try.

Although he hasn't hit 70 (he's at 67) , I've pretty much done the whole Mage thing with both PvP and PvE. I had fun with it, but I kinda want to try something new now. My question is this: Which class do you guys think I should try? I enjoy a nice blend of both PvE and PvP, but I wouldn't consider myself "hardcore" on either side of the spectrum. I'd like a class that is fairly viable in both situations, and also provides a decent challenge for me to play.

I also realize that every class has their flaws, and that alot of this depends on talent builds and what not, but I'm just trying to pose this question in a generalized manner. Thanks in advance :)

P.S. I'm not sure how much relevance this holds, but I'm planning to start the character on a PvP server.

Well, yes...but the whole point of the post is to get opinions from other people. I know that only I make my decisions, but because of the fact that I'm not sure what I want to do, I want to hear some opinions from other people.

Well, I'm not horribly picky, but like I said, I enjoy a nice mixture of PvE and PvP, so I would like a class that is viable in both situations. I was thinking about maybe starting a Warrior, mostly solo to 70, do some end game tanking, and simultaenously level a Rogue that would do PvE, but be more PvP oriented. Those are just some ideas. I'm open to anything, really.

I usually divide and conquer on these kinda issues. So...

Pet class or no? If yes, warlock or hunter. Of the 2, I'd roll a lock since the reputation of hunters is meh and well, locks have fear.

You have a caster so doing another would, I imagine, mean something different. For example shadow priest brings some healing to the table. What utility aside from dps interests you most? Druid brings melee dps and tank capabilities as well as good healing,as does pally

Do you want the option of tanking? If so, warrior, pally, druid.

If tanking doesn't interest you, rogue. Awesome melee dps, but that's it - the mage's melee counterpart really. The nice thing about rogues and mages is that we're never asked to do heals or tank... our utility is very well defined, but it's also limited.

If I were you I'd go on the other end of the spectrum. Go warrior. No mana, no drinking, just hack and slash fun.

Roll a couple alts. Play with their newb powers. See how much fun they are to get out of their starter areas. Stay with the one you enjoy the most. Thats my suggestion!

Lock - end of story :P I have all classes level'd high enough to say otherwise. I found the Lock very fun to play and can do PvP and PvE really well. Oh, try out the Afflic-lock once you get to lvl 50 or so. Soooo much fun!

The Rogue would be my second choice followed closely with the Druid/Shammy.

I have a hunter @ 70 and a lock @ 59. I enjoy the hunter much more than I do the warlock. I'm leveling a Paladin now to give that a try. I've partially leveled Warrior and Rogue before. Both are good to play.

all classes are viable for pve and pvp.

if you want something that's different from your mage, pick a melee based class, warrior, pally or rogue. if you must have some ranged attacks, go for a druid.

Wow, thanks for all the awesome responses. Feel free to continue the discussion, I'm still trying to decide what I'm gonna do. I'm kinda leaning toward Rogue right now, but I'm still not 100% sure. :afro:

I like healthy levels of both PvP and PvE. While I don't like the ganking on PvP servers, I also don't like raiding, so for me, those are the two extremes I don't go to. I also play every class... or rather, I have characters of every class. I've found that the more fun I have with a character, the more often I end up playing that character, and the higher that character's level goes. Right now:

I have two level 70 Hunters (one Horde, one Alliance), with two radically different builds and playstyles.
I have a level 70 Druid which for me, is the downright easiest, most comfortable class for me to play and level with.
I have a level 62 Warrior... she's been a challenge to play, but I keep going back to her because she tickles my sense of irony (and I tend to do things to make it far more obvious.... she's a Gnome... and it seems like a little girl running around beating up demons and dragons).
I have a level 47 Undead Warlock. Lots of fun with this character, with her "send pet, dot, dot, dot, life tap, life tap, drain" sequence keeping her as my second character with zero downtime (the Druid is by and far the first). I don't play her as much as the others... mainly because my roommate has a high level warlock too.
I have a level 41 Blood Elf Paladin. With her, I am determined to have her do quite literally every single quest available to the Horde. It is a challenge, but I've found it rewarding in its own way. Eventually, she'll be wandering around with a mount from each of the Horde races.
I have a level 32 Human Mage. Mages are fun, they kill things REAL fast... but she's not as much fun to me as the others.
Of the rest, I have a Draenei Priest, a Night Elf Rogue, and a Troll Shaman. These get the least play time for me. I guess I don't care for those classes as much as the others. They are all at about 25 - 27.

Ranged or Melee?
Caster or no?
Pet or no?

I would lean towards Rogue if you like doing DPS but want a different experience.

Ok..here is my take on the thingy - I created a character of each class and play them all from time to time:

Warlock (lv70): Awesome. My first serious character. Love it. After a warlock, a mage pales in complexity and fun. (Affliction with a dash of destro)

Rogue (lv 70): Was my bank alt for two years when I decided to burn his rested Xp. Was and still is crazy fun. Right up there close and dirty. Pretty much opposite to a warlock, but love him. (combat maces)

Mage: (lv 69): Can be fun, even a frost mage puts out some bad mofo crits, but cannot touch my warlock..as stated above. Sits at 69 and I cannot really be arsed to level that last bit, so I feel your pain. (frosty)

Priest (lv 62): Biased here. She was my attempt at hardcore gaming, like in Diablo 2 and died at lv 50 when I dced in a fight for the first time. Kinda tainted the character for me and I never got to fully experience the healing side. (Full shadow)

Hunter (lv 61): A bit of everything. With a pet a bit of warlock feeling, with survival a bit of rogue feeling. Definitely cruise control mode. Can be incredibly fun and incredibly boring. (BM)

Warrior (lv 55): Tried this because I always thought I woulld like to test my skill at tanking. Still not doing it..levelling. Not too bad, but pales in levelling speed to other classes. You need dedication to be a warrior IMHO. (Arms/Fury)

Shaman (lv 55): The dark horse. Booooring, boooring, booring to lv 40. No punch, no toughness, no nothing. A real drag. Then: BAM: Dual wield and Stormstrike and she took off like a bat out of hell. I even treated her to a couple of rare weapons with Crusader on both. Loving every minute. (Enhancement)

Druid (lv 43) bit of a drag to lv 20, but good fun when you get catform. This one could be your class. Insane versatility. (feral)

Paladin (lv 26) Not too bad, but really too low for a final verdict (retri)

Ok..here is my take on the thingy - I created a character of each class and play them all from time to time

It's funny, because I did the same thing. Only I actually strategized (sic) and plotted out how to evenly distribute my characters between all of the races and classes. I even distributed across genders. Originally I ended up with the following:

Horde:
Orc Hunter
Tauren Druid
Undead Warlock
Troll Shaman
Troll Priest *

Alliance:
Dwarf Hunter
Gnome Warrior
Night Elf Rogue
Human Mage
Human Paladin *

I ended up having to double up a class, and doubled up a couple races, but I got my 10 character slots filled. When Burning Crusade was announced and eventually launched, I deleted my < level 10 Paladin and Priest, replacing them with the new races, and swapping factions:

Horde:
Orc Hunter
Tauren Druid
Undead Warlock
Troll Shaman
Blood Elf Paladin

Alliance:
Dwarf Hunter
Gnome Warrior
Night Elf Rogue
Human Mage
Draenei Priest

It was interesting trying to figure out how to distribute the races and classes like that. I also then figured out the gender distribution because I started with my Orc Hunter, who was male (modeled after my last character from Everquest). I wanted my Dwarf Hunter to be nothing like my Orc Hunter, so I made her female. From there, I alternated male and female on my characters:

Horde:
Male Orc Hunter
Female Undead Warlock
Male Tauren Druid
Female Blood Elf Paladin
Male Troll Shaman

Alliance:
Female Dwarf Hunter
Male Night Elf Rogue
Female Gnome Warrior
Male Draenei Priest
Female Human Mage

...

Ok, maybe I spent far too much time on it all, but it was a fun little logic puzzle for me ;)

I read about your two hunters on the forum and think it is a nice idea.

On the other hand, my friend lives shamans and Paladins. He has three of each and levels each on a different tree. I think he is nuts.

I am not going as far as you with the gender / race distribution, my reasons are simpler.

Can't stand Taurens as a Horde race. I love the looks as a warrior, but personally when playing them, they feel too alien. Yet, they cover the druid class.

Male UD warlock for the pure and evil. Female UD priestess...his wife. Lost and seperated when the plaque hit.

Female BE Paladin for sheer sexism.

Orc warrior. Pretty much THE race for warriors.

Troll rogue and mage. The coolest of the bunch. Don't like the ladies, how they look and move. This was my missed chance for more variety :)

Female Orc shaman...Didn't want another Troll and we have a female Orc shaman on ourserver who is just a hero for many ppl.

Nightelves, humans, dwarves and especially gnomes, irk me. Most Alliance annoys me. I can barely stand human and NE ladies and I am 95% a Hordling. That left the Draenei, where again the males look like a brick-****house and thus my hunter is a little demonic looking lady.

My son also has an account where I have a human Paladin female as AH servant and started human female warlock. Stuck at lv 12. So (as I said) while I am a fan of warlocks, I am also a bigger fan of the Horde.....

I have played all the classes up to different levels and the most fun I have had is a survival hunter and the most boring time I have had is a BM hunter.

Warriors are more fun to level now that it is a bit quicker.

I have a 70 feral Druid (My first real toon). Love the cat form but loathe tanking. Its just not me. Took me 70 levels to figure that out and now he is just there to have some fun with PvPing. I will say that the survivablity may be more than any other class out there. >cheetah>HoT>cheetah>full heal>bear>feral charge....

I have at least 1 of every class. It was really the only way I found out what is "me". I rolled a mage after speccing boomkin on my druid and a rogue, because I liked cat form so much. The mage and the rogue were my highest alts in their mid 30's.

My friends and I thgought it would be fun to start over from scratch on a PvP server. So I rolled a lock. Looked fun. Leveled her to 70. The dmg output is just crazy. Im afflic mainly with a couple in demo and a couple in destro. PvP can be very annoying with my spec because you dont do enough burst dmg and with most other classes immune to fear. I can't keep mobs off of me. (Althought I do laugh when they die as they are running away from my dead body). After playing the lock for a long while, I went back and leveled my mage to 70.

That is where I found that the mage is "me". I love my mage. By far my funniest toon. He is 0/0/61. Full frost. I love it. I can PvP with it great. I can PvE with it great. I love it. Nothing like rounding up 8-10 mobs knowing that not 1 will touch you.

Currently i'm sort of leveling a priest. He is shadow right now, to level with the full intent of going holy @ or around 70. He is fun, but nothing like my mage.

With all of that said, I think that you just have to find with one is "you"...

For the Horde.

Oh man. I thought I was the only person who did that. That is incredible.

And it's a lot of fun, strangely.

As for my recommendation to the OP, try out a Shaman. I leveled a Warrior to 63, and I'm currently taking my Mage to 70 (currently at 66.) I plan on rolling a Shaman after I raid a bit with the Mage, because I feel it'll be a perfect balance of magic and melee for me.
