Spent an evening killing everything that moved around the oases in Barren Lands. Must have killed a hundred giraffes (I'd believed from what I read online that they might have this recipe) but no luck. At the end of it, my lvl 43 Night Elof Hunter had skinned a lot, killed a lot, gained no XP, and no recipe. He fishes for Deviate Fish and I've got quite a few in the bank, so really want to find this recipe. Any suggestions?

its a rare drop so you might be at it for ages or you might get lucky in an hour or so

Dang. It costs the earth on the AH. Well, OK, thanks - next time I go fishing there I'll kill a bunch of things too and see.

I suggest slaughtering these guys as they've got a whooping 1.5% chance to drop the recipe you're looking to get. You really should be able to clear them out as fast as they could hope to respawn.
Happy Hunting ^_^

I've leveled 5 or 6 toons to their late 20's in the barrens and only had it drop once. I consider myself very lucky.
The recipe is worth getting. I made enough just in selling the cooked fish to fund a twink (the one that has the recipee) and all my other toons on the server.

I'd like to have it in a desperate attempt to get some gold. Got a fair number of the fish and need to enhance them a bit. Haven't seen the NPCs at all that are described in the post prior to yours. They're 'Burning Blade Toxicologists' and all I've ever seen in the Barrens is animals and a few humanoids, not these guys. Must research where I can find them. Thanks, though, to all who respon ded.

I got mine off of a Zhevra Runner just after crossing over from Durotar. I think your luck is about the same on any mob, it's pretty random.

Those guys are located waaaaay atop one of those huge, bumpy hills in the Barrens. I can't remember, but I think it might be the one closest to the Lushwater Oasis. I grinded them one day for hours and never got the drop. Best of luck to ya! lol

Thanks. I got the coordinates off one of the many websites, so will go have a look maybe next week.

just sell the fish raw. you'll probably get about the same price. i would pick a more efficient way of making gold though... heck, mining is a lot better to do.

The AH in Stormwind seems to be selling everything very badly lately - I've had bolts of cloth of all sorts, minerals (smelted and unsmelted) and now Deviate Fish come back without even a bid. And my prices aren't exorbitant. I've got a bank full of things I put on twice at reasonable prices and got back.

that sucks abeezil. yea sometimes it happens. i have several such items that occassionally do not sell. but the fish will only be sold to people who know the Savory Deviate Delight recipe, or the Elixir of Giant Growth recipe. if you were on my server i'd buy them from you. those are the only people that will actually want to buy your fish. and when i look for them, if i cannot make money off of the purchase, then i wont buy. so also check the going prices for the products too.

Thanks. I've decided to wait for the weekend to put anything more on the AH; things do seem to sell a bit better then. Roll on summer, though! Last year AH sales were good all summer. With a bit of luck that'll happen again (I suppose with all the kids out of school and playing WoW). In the meantime, I'll keep fishing for Deviate Fish. I've got the Find Fish ability and with Fishing Buddy addon know what chance I have of getting some. And really, when they do sell, they do make money.

yea they do! that's why i still run into wailing caverns to fish whenever i get bored (im on a pvp server so i have to to inside the insteance, otherwise, gankness happens). and yes its true, wait for the kids to be outta school! there's always more money to be made then. =]
good luck abeezil. one day, maybe you'll find both recipes and make both. one is cooking, the other is alchemist recipe. so you'll have to be an alchemist to use that.

It's the only way I can hope to make money to keep up with training and equipping and maybe one day a mount. And when it sells, it does sell well. Each time I take my fishing Night Elf Hunter to those oases we kill all the local livestock and anything else that moves. Maybe one day, some day, that recipe will drop. In the meantime, he's got Skinning too, so I'm amassing a lot of saleable leather.

yes... leather sells well. you can make a lot just skilling level 50+ beasts. what level are you, btw? yes sell the leathers and if you do have leatherworking, do not combine leathers!! they sell for more seperate.

He's a lvl 43 and I'm itching to get him a mount. So every day it's hi ho, hi ho, off to fish we go (for Deviate Fish) and with those and the skinning, things are beginning to look more encouraging financially. How I wish I could get that recipe, though........ An even greedier thought is if I could only get two copies....... I could learn one and sell the other and I see it sells very well on the AH.
I see that his fishing and cooking skills (both now at 300) have to wait for two separate quests in Outland at a much higher level. That's a bit disappointing.

i see. i think the minimum level is 50 to go beyond 300 skill. just have a mage portal you to shattrath. you can return whenever you get sick of watching people's flying mounts. i i dont think there are any quests you have to take, just buy the book that will teach you these things.
if you're level 42 (and i tell this to EVERYONE i know) skinning dragonkin around onyxia's lair is the best place to skin at your level. basically run around the hill in a big circle, kill all the camps of dragons you see, skin. they drop gold and greens. they dont drop vendor trash, and more often than not, you get 2 leathers instead of 1.

On my server the cooked fish go for 1.5x-2x the price of the raw fish. That said, however, I had the hardest time trying to level cooking with my alt. The meats I needed weren't ever on the AH and I really didn't want to take my main out of the way to farm these meats. To me it's more worth it to just sell the raw fish and move on. They sell pretty good... about 10-12g per stack and they're pretty easy to catch since the schools spawn so frequently. They're not as easy to catch as the eels off the coast of Feralas, though!
I make most of my gold from mining, skinning, and fishing deviates. When I'm bored with leveling I will usually fly to Crossroads and ride over to the different pools and fish deviates, while killing and skinning everything I encounter along the way. I get enough ores from just leveling my toon to keep the AH busy with those. I just dinged level 50 Monday, 51 yesterday, and will likely ding 52 today and I have just over 500g now. That's after two major setbacks, otherwise I'd be over 700g right now. I remember starting this guy and getting a few COPPER pieces from every kill and thinking "I miss my 70, I will NEVER, EVER be able to have that much gold again!" I immediately went skinning and mining.

Thanks, I'll try that. I really, really want to see this guy get a mount.
Incidentally, anyone that's trying like I am to make his fortune with Deviate Fish, it pays to get the Find Fish skill (I got my char's by fishing at the Venture Co river and pools near their camp in StoneTalon Mountains). I don't think it's limited to hunters and wow, does it make a difference. There are several places where it can be fished. I got it there by fishing the patches of floating wreckage. You find it in a waterproof trunk you haul in.
And that's another thing - fishing floating wreckage anywhere gets good results - lots of greens, bolts of cloth, potions and money. You have to cast right into the middle of the wreckage, though.

to answer your question, the Find Fish book can only be caught if:
1. you fish in wreckage.
2. you do not already have the skill.
3. if you are a rogue, you can peek into the box and sell it to someone who also does not have the skill. someone with the skill will not be able to get it again. If you loot the box, the book will be bound to you. If you want to farm the book, you'll have to make sure you do not know the skill and not have any other chest with the box in your inventory.
4. if i recall correctly.

Thanks. I knew where and how to get it, in fact sent my husband off there with his fishing Paladin to get it and it's made fishing a lot easier. And that should have made me realise that chars other than Hunters could get it. But it really is a help. Using it, I went tonight all down the coast of STV fishing floating wreckage, then from Booty Bay to Ratchet and on to the oases to fish for Deviate Fish.

My mage has it, got it in Alterac, essentially I was running along Lordamere Lake, coming back from some questing.
Saw some floating wreckage, decided to do a quick fishing stop and it popped up.

It turns your character into a Pirate or a ninja for an hour. Its basically only a cosmetic change but it can be amusing ;)

As stated, it creates a temporary cosmetic change in your character. Fish for more, I'd say, and put them for sale on the AH and make some money.

Yeah, money is easy to make. Don't make the mistake I did when I changed servers and was stoney broke - I bought gold. Got me a 3 day holiday. Actually got a final warning for other, "...multiple violations" whatever they were so on perma best behavior now :innocent:
Anyway, decided to level her as an alchy and have been selling the spares I gather but don't need. They sell VERY well, am literally talking about several gold for 30-40 mins running around Elwyn Forrest before I go to work in the morning.

Deviate Fish has been a money maker for both me and my husband. I just wish we could get that recipe. But we've killed so many things around those oases, been up a mountain to kill another bunch that were supposed to drop it, and no luck.
