Wow....so many sad...overstated..cherry picked examples.

How about a real one.

1957 - Anthony, an black boy, wants to go to a decent school. White kids beat him up, cops haul him off for the audacity of it. He is spit upon and treated like ****. Later, he is lynched and hung to prove a point.

2007 - Anthony goes to a crappy inner city school, but its still 100x better than his options 50 years ago.

See I can cherry pick to.

EDIT: Sorry to come off harsh....we do have our issues today but to imply things were magical and all better in the 50's is ignoring reality.

It's no longer the 1st of April, but that doesn't mean that everything I post suddenly became completely serious.

Ah....ok...really sorry then.

I've got some family members who think the end is near pretty much and things were perfect in the 50's.

Perfect maybe if you were a middle class or higher white male that is.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Honestly, I'd argue that things aren't better now than 50 years ago. Maybe a little worse for wear as time progresses, but not really enough to take notice overall. Conditions have shuffled around a bit, some have gotten better, others have gotten worse. Now people can go to school regardless of age. Of course my old High School is now also rampant with gang violence, shootings, drugs, and even the Principal needs a police escort just to get to his office. And I'm not even in a big city. From history, it is easy to see that when one societal problem gets "fixed" or at least worked on enough to be significantly reduced, one or two more become the new problem -- which is why, as I said, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I don't get it. It's a joke? It doesn't really come across as a joke... It comes across as a delusional fantasy about a "better time and a better place" and a ill-informed confusion about cause and effect in current events.

But then, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, cause I don't live in your country.

Def agree there. Same goes for women to.

Imagine the halirity that would ensue if a woman and a black man ran for president in 1957.

I can easily. They would both be dead in days.

It's not perfect but it sure as hell is progress.

Wow, so much analysis...on a joke.
Well done Shellar. I enjoyed this thoroughly and laughed out loud. I would think anyone who had ever read even one of your posts would appreciate your wit and sense of irony (and who could forget with the creepiest looking Johnny Depp i've ever seen staring at you?)...guess not.
