wanna get to outland as quick as possible, i was told 'old content' sucks
I would suggest finishing all of the quests in the Barrens and then heading to Stonetalon Mountains.

I went to ashenvale at 20 and did Ok once you get up a couple of levels, but stonetalon is a lower lvl zone-
Get to Thousand needles after that then go to STV - Both places have good 'grind quests' that are a very efficient way to rack up the XP.

if u are level 20 then you should leave the barrens cuz is not point staying there at that lvl.. you should choose between stonetalon and ashenvale .. but as u said died 3 times... then you probs have some problems with that zone cuz u dnt usualy die there at lvl 20 and especialy if u are hunter... but anyway.. i will suggest u to go stonetalon there is like 2 -3 lvl lower than ashenvale and good for questing.. ust opened a rogue lvl 21 and he is in stonetalon and is perfect there.. so ill sugets u yo try it.. and you shudnt have probles with hunter class

There are level 20ish quests both out of Crossroads and out of Camp Taurajo. Stonetalon is also great at your level. Ashenvale is best left until your mid-20s.

First off, go check on Camp Taurajo, there may be some quests there for you. If you've completed those then head for Stonetalon Mountains and do the quests there for a few levels.
It is important to tell you that "old content" does not suck. If you aren't enjoying the game in the twenties then you probably won't enjoy it at seventy. Of course, at seventy a large part of the game is instancing and/or raiding so you would be well advised to start doing instances as soon as you can to learn how to use your skills to work as part of a team. There are an awful lot of Hunters out there and just being good at soloing does not mean that you have the skills to work in a group or a raid. Raid leaders can afford to be very picky about which Hunters they take along, if you can't trap effectively and don't turn growl off your pet without being told to then chances are you won't have a good time at seventy.
Old content isn't an obstacle to seventy, it's an opportunity to get ready for seventy ... enjoy the journey because it's a terrible waste if you don't.

old content rocks. i dont know what your friends are talking about.
as for your leveling problems, you shouldnt be dying in ashenvale. unless you got ganked, dying in ashenvale means you havent used your hunter well. we can probably help you here, but you'll have to first... come back to the thread... and then tell us what you're doing, playstyle, etc.
secondly, the people above gave good advice. Southern barrens is where you'd like to be, as is southeast stonetalon mountains. go back and forth between them and also, when you go to ashenvale, get the flightpath and quest to kill naga... go all the way west to the shore and kill naga. those are probably the easiest things out there for your level.

playstyle is basically, mark, send pet to attack then sting/arcane/auto..whichever i have enough mana for..and when i went to ashenvale the first thing i did was head west .. but those asshole monsters with their invisibilties come out of nowhere and beat the crap out of me..this is why ashenvale is hard cos i always get ganked even if im paying attention..

wait.... what invisible monsters??
the only ones i know of are the alliance scounts and some satyrs.
you'll want to avoid those guys for now.
stay on the road that leads to splintertree post. grab quest from there that takes you to zoram strand (kill nagas). then go west along the road. when you hit astranarr, go around it, coninue on the road til you hit meastra's post. once you past meastra's post (the road should turn northwards) jump off the road and head west towards the coast to the zoram strand. there's a horde base at the southern part of the beach. black fathom deeps is in the northern part of that beach. there are level 19-21 mobs north east of meastra's post too.
maps shows where you should be heading to. yellow dots:

also, you're well aware of pet's talent points right?
and remember to mend pet often! its very very valuable. dont overuse your mana, for each mob, i wouldnt do more than keep the stings coming and an occassional arcane shot here or there. if they run to me, just concussive shot them and hope your pet can regain aggro.

You have two choices to pick from once you are done with the Barrens. You either go West into Stonetalon Mountains. This place is not very packed with Alliance. Mostly Horde go to this location because alliance can't really get there that easily in the low levels. Or you can go North into Ashenvale. You will encounter Alliance in this place since they are coming from Darkshore. I really like this place, but I didn't do that many quests here as a Horde. I would prefer going here until 27.

Ashenvale is a bit difficult for Horde, since it's geared towards Alliance levelling - the west area (where Alliance will enter from Darkshore) is lower-level than the east area (where Horde will enter from the Barrens). So if you want to start questing in Ashenvale, and do what elsegundo said and start out at the outpost on the western beach, then you'll need to traverse the whole of Ashenvale which starts out hard because of the difficult position that Horde find themselves in. Just stick to the road when possible, go around Astranaar by sticking to the north shore of the lake it's in, and you should be just fine. The further you go west, the easier it'll become because the mobs will be lower in level.

There are indead invisible furbolg in the furbolg village north of the Talondeep Path and south of the road. You can't target them, but they can dmg and kill you. Keep your pet on Defensive. It'll run to them and kill them for you. Just make sure you keep it healed and aggro off you.
I had the most trouble in this area until my wife came along with her hunter.

Usually when someone mentions in a post "I was told that", the bit that follows is absolute rubbish. Why would old content suck?

I do found old content less enjoyable once I had reached the wonderworld of Outland. Quite simply: quest rewards.
In Outland nearly every quest that has a gear reward has something you could equip. If the quest requires an instance or killing an elite it'd be a blue.
In the old world it's a green way below your level IF you're lucky enough that you can wear it.

Goodness! Your experience of Outland is very different to mine. Most quests offer me nothing usable. The ratio of usable rewards from Outland has, for my Hunter, been pretty much the same as Azeroth. Of course those items that are useful are significantly better than the pre-TBC items, but then the mobs are harder and I'm higher level so I'd expect that really.

i found that after several quests in HFP, most of my stats doubled. so they were useful to me on both my hunter and my lock. and i had pretty decent azeroth gear too. haha. but there are some who have way better gear than me going into outlands. so its all perspective there.

While it's true that your first experience stepping in to Outlands is breathtaking that in no way means that Azeroth "sucks". Azeroth absolutely rocks - WOW was a huge success long before TBC was released.
Yes cash and quest rewards are much better than Azeroth - they are designed for lvl 60-70. Quest rewards in Azeroth are just as good - for the level you are at.
Blizzard has also revamped old world instances so that you get great Blues just like you would in Outlands.
Run instances and enjoy questing and adventuring in Azeroth and forget about what your friends said.
As far as straight questing and adventuring goes I like the eye candy of Outlands but I actually prefer the questing now in the old world as progression is much faster than it is in Outlands.

For decent gear upgrades in Azeroth you really need to do instances. Take advantage of that revamp Zendarin mentions. Because the quest rewards... *shakes head and sighs*.
LFG Uldaman anyone
