View Full Version : What's with the motes?

I a 70 Hunter with Mining skill and I keep getting these "motes" off the elementals. The motes say on them "turn 10 motes of (earth, air, water, etc.) into Primal (earth, air, water, etc). I understand that Primal (whatevers) are used in making thing. Having mining skill I appear to have 2 options under Smelting, to turn 10 Motes of Earth into Primal Earth or Ten Motes of Fire into Primal Fire. These require Primal Earth and Primal Fire as a necessary ingredient for turning the Motes into Primal Earth and Primal Fire. I am assuming that the only way for me to get Primal Earth in order to turn my Motes of Earth into Primal Earth is to buy them at the AH. Primal Earth is about 90g on my server for one, so what's going on here? or as they say in casual chat "WTF?"
Do I have to buy a Primal Earth in order to create a Primal Earth? Do 10 Motes of Earth + 1 Primal Earth create 1 Primal Earth or 10 Primal Earths? Is there other ways to make Primal Earth? Is it better to just sell my primal motes at AH and forget about transforming them? I hate to sound like a newbie, but this confuses me. Thanx.

your question confuses me. hahaha. can you clarify. you're mixing up primals and motes and then call something else primal motes, wtf?

Okay...from the beginning. you get ten motes..right click on them and make a full primal. I'm not certain why mining says that... i'm pretty sure any profession can combine the motes. 10 motes = 1 primal. Primal earths run about 5g on my server, they're very common. If you have ten motes, you don't need to buy anything on the ah, just try right clicking on them to combine them. You don't need to already own any primals to combine your motes.
For example... I go out and fish the pools of pure water in Nagrand, getting 10x motes of water. I right click on the motes in my inventory and get 1 primal water. That's it.

lol.
You can take primals, and break them back down into motes as a miner.
Its saying it takes 1 Primal Fire to make 10 motes of fire.

how is that useful?

He's got the mining abilities reversed, those are breaking a primal back down into motes, not for forming the primals. Which is, of course, the reason they require a primal.
Anyone can do motes->primals regardless of professions.

Certain enchants/eng mats/stones/pots need motes instead of primals. Guess it's for lazy people who have primals but just need a few motes.

Sarcastic comments are not appreciated. I was trying to explain what was going on. I was confused about the motes and primal earth. It is true that anyone can convert the motes into primal earth (fire, water, etc.) What confused me was that under Smelting (Earth Shatter) it says that you can convert 10 motes into Primal Earth using as a reagent Primal Earth, not the other way around. It says that, I can get a screenshot. So it didn't occur me to click on the motes. Okay...duh! My bad. So in effect my problem is solved, and really, thanx for the comments. I"m better informed now.

10 motes of <whatever>, when clicked, combines into 1 Primal <whatever>.
With mining, you have the ability to split 1 Primal Earth or 1 Primal Fire into 10 Motes of Earth or 10 Motes of Fire respectively. This is useful as there are some Blacksmithing and Engineering recipes that require Motes, rather than Primals of Fire & Earth (like the recipe for Elemental Blasting Powder that is used in a lot of Engineering goodness, like making Adamantite Shells).
So.... 10 Motes of Fire = 1 Primal Fire
with Mining, you can split 1 Primal Fire into 10 Motes of Fire. Got it?

Less a matter of being lazy, and more a matter of Primals stack better than Motes. I keep a stack of Primal Earth and a stack of Primal Fire on my Dwarf Hunter, and whenever I need more Elemental Blasting Powder to make more bullets, I just split a Primal of each (as needed), make up some blasting powder, then make the ammo boxes. 2 Motes of Earth & 1 Mote of Earth (plus some simple wood and a couple adamantite bars) = 2,000 bullets (2 boxes). Not bad, in the grand scheme of things.

My question confused you because I was confused. Now it's all straightened out, I have become unconfused. Sorry. :lipsrsealed:

Its the tooltip for the Mote of earth that says "Use: Turn ten Motes of Earth onto Primal Earth" that you are seeing in the Earth Shatter section of smelting.

Right! That's exactly what threw me off and got me confused. "Earth Shatter" isn't explained and the original tooltip that goes with the motes remains in the Smelting window.

Well, the tooltip for the icon for the mats will always be the tooltip for that mat. And the tooltip for Motes of Earth explain how to make a Primal Earth. That said, the shatter recipes seemed painfully obvious to me

the shatter recipe cant be obvious as it says use 10 motes to turn into a primal. when its actualy turn 1 primal into 10 motes
