Hello All

I am new to wow so please be kind if my questions seem stupid.
I have just bought wow and have installed it. I am running it on the 10 trail until i figure out what i am doing then i will re-install it.

The version is 2.0.0.6080 which seems to be out of date. It works on the genuine wow server but i think i need to upgrade it to ver 2.3 or 2.4 to work on most of the private servers. Is this the case? If so is there a patch which i can install that will upgrade it from 2.0.0.6080 to the latest version and can someone give me a link as most of the patches i have found will only upgrade from a later version.

Also has anybody has problems editing there realmlist file using vista. I have found that when i try to edit it in the wow folder it wont let me save the changes. i have copied it into a different folder, renamed it, edited it,copied it back to the wow folder and then renamed it again so i could edit it. Is this normal? or is there a simpler way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks Stubbsy

To further elaborate: you need 2.4 to play on the real servers. Don't play on private servers. We do not wish to help you with that at all.

First big reason is: it is not allowed by Blizzard and so it is against this forums rules as well
Second big reason is: private servers are a weak copy of the real thing, loaded with bugs and annoying unhelpful people, not counting some GMs but that doesn't help because there aren't many GMs on them usually, or you'd have to count those annoying unhelpful players that all got GM-powers so they can "play god".

Overall I'm not a private server-hater. I had some fun, but quickly realized how much MORE fun the real thing is.

So yeah, good luck w that, hope to see you in the real game soon.

*Raises eyebrow*

Ok, I'll skip the whole private server thing, because your fellow forumites have been kind enough to enlighten you already. Try asking about them again though, and we folks in green are going to get grouchy and you don't want that.

If, you're running the trial on the official servers, then you should already been patched up to the latest version of the game. You wouldn't be able to log in otherwise.

That box in red on the bottom left hand corner is where you need to look for the version you're running.

If, you haven't logged in yet, and have only done the fresh install, then simply look for a 2.4 patch mirror. The official site ought to be able to point you in the direction of the one you need (being an Ozzie, you'd be playing on the US servers most likely, west coast.) All you need is the 2.4 master patch, it contains all the material of the previous patches. Once downloaded and run, then you let the Blizzard torrent take care of the hotfixes and mini-patches which have come since the release of 2.4.

Once that's done, you simply log in and play.

As for the realmlist, you don't have any reason to fiddle around with it. So we won't be helping you resolve that issue.

Which part of the following isn't clear to you?

If, you've messed up and can't log onto the normal servers, then just delete it. The game will make a new one for you and things will function again.

If, you're asking, because you want help to get onto a private server.. Well.. Let's just say the consequences for your account here, won't be pretty.

I did not know that... but then again, I never needed to know it .

Private Servers are violations of Blizzard's EULA and ToU. Private Servers are not permitted to be discussed in these forums, because these forums support Blizzard's EULA/ToU. Private Servers are not "ok".
