View Full Version : When to sell before the new expansion?

What happened to the old world valuable items after TBC?
What type of items will be affected the most when the new expansion comes out?
Should I get rid of my primal might, shards, dusts, rare formulas before the next expansion? If I do, when?
Thanks in advance.

The old-world "valuable items" either became forgotten, or in some cases their prices lowered to be more in-line with the fact they were not "end-game" items any more. Same will probably happen with TBC items.

LOL. Have you saved any? When are you going to get rid of yours?

I collect a *lot* of primals, but I also tend to hand them out to guildies as needed, and/or use them for my own professions as I go along. Rare formulas also typically either I hold onto for my own professions, or I hand them off into the guild bank for distribution to the guild.
I don't bother holding onto stuff to sell them much any more... I'll try the AH on items for a little bit, if it doesn't pan out, I either disenchant them, or just vendor them... of course, I only put them up for auction as more or less a last resort anyway. 2x 25 daily quests on Horde and Alliance for me = a LOT of gold whenever I really need it.
Some items however skyrocketed. Large Brilliant and Large radiant shards are much more expensive now than before...
Dark runes still cost a fortune for those poor buggers doing the Pala mount quests, but lava cores and fiery cores nobody would buy. Or the librams...sought after pre TBC, worthless now. Righteous orbs still sell (Crusader). In that way, mongoose and executioner may become an everyday levelling enchant and enchant mats may stay valuable.
etc, etc...
So the answer is: We don't know

huh.. maybe I will just sell all my primal lifes. It's not like I can't get a bunch when I need them.

I'd say that it's a good bet to think the following things will lose a ton of value (if not most or all value) by the time WotLK hits full-swing:
Primals (all of them)... they will become what essences are now (virtually worthless).
enchanting materials (the arcane dusts, large prismatics, void crystals, etc.) will become less sought after/less valueable as they are replaced by whatever new mats are out there.
Herbs (some will retain value, but most will drop.... some to oblivion)
Leathers (will drop in demand and value... but will still retain some usefulness for those leveling up).
Mining (same as herbs and leathers).
Gems (all the "cool" gems that were introduced within TBC will become largely obsolete I imagine to be replaced by WoTLK gems).
Darkmoon cards (will still retain some value, but ultimately will drop as the new ones come out).
Basically any raw materials will become largely outdated in the expansion. There may be some use for lower level items for twinking, etc, but I don't imagine much.

Some people certainly jumping the gun in this thread.
Copper bar stacks 1 year ago on my realm = 1g
Today? = 6g.
Some bread and butter type items, will be farmed less and become more valuable in time.
Having said that i have about 10 Large Prismatics, 1000 Arcane Dust and 100 Planar Essences that I really should get rid of within the next 3 months.

Darkmoon cards (will still retain some value, but ultimately will drop as the new ones come out).
QFT. I sold every DMF card I had during the Darkmoon Faire in December, right before the expansion hit, made a killing, and could have picked them all back up for less than a quarter the price even before the new DMF cards came out, so most of that was just competition with the outlands trinkets.
Basically, if it's gear and not twink-quality gear, the price will go down. Crafting mats that are commonly used to powerlevel crafts will probably go up at first (most people I know had at least one toon change crafting professions when the expansion came out, because so many of them had new uses), though where they settle is anyone's guess. Crafting mats that aren't commonly used to powerlevel crafts will likely go way down unless they are for something that isn't obsolete when the next expansion comes out.
Bag prices will plummet except for those bags that don't get an upgrade, and even then, the prices will probably come down. We can expect at least an 18 slot bag, if not 20 slot bag, that's as easy to make as the current 16 slot bags, and then bigger bags that take more work.
I'm not sure some of you realize how the economy works. In fact, primals and enchanting mats will likely increase in value, due to less people farming and collecting them.
Primals for instance: Virtually all trade skills require massive amounts of primals for leveling purposes. When WotlK hits, there will be many many people either creating new toons, changing professions, or creating Death Knights (I'm assuming Death Knights will not come with maxed trade skills, though I guess that is possible). People will still need lots of primals to level their skills. The demand will almost certainly surpass the supply, as the majority of those who are contributing primals to the economy will be leveling up in Northrend, causing prices to go up.
Its all about supply and demand. If the demand surpasses the supply, prices will go up.

Actually, from what I've seen, a lot of the professions do have ways to level without using primals. And those that done, could easily be given some kind of "filler" recipes that don't require primals, just like what had been done a bit for the < 300 skill recipes...

Actually, it's highly likely primals will be replaced with some other type of "elemental" products. I'm basing my assumption of the price drop and demand on that.
Take a look at essences from the old world. How used are essence of air? Fire? water? They are very rarely used and/or AH worthy from my experience. As a result, I vendor them - they aren't worth the time.
Assuming the expansion bring about new raw materials (which seems highly likely), then older materials will significantly drop in demand. Hence, it will not be worth the time largely to "farm" them once the expansion gets a solid foothold.

To be honest, I'd start selling stuff a couple months or so before WotLK is released. You'd probably be able to make a killing as everyone scrambles to squeeze out the last few points needed in their profs to get 375 so they can immediately jump onto the new stuff that'll be coming out with the new X-pack.
