View Full Version : Need Help Choosing a Class (Not Just Another Vague "Which one is best?" Thead)

For a period of about 10 months I played WoW and over this past summer decided to quit. Presently, I'm considering resubscribing to WoW (yes, the addiction got the better of me), and I'm having a bit of trouble choosing a class.

I used to know the game very well, but since quitting I've quickly forgotten much of how things work (not to mention the changes with patches and such). Before I quit a had a Tauren druid and from what I remember I enjoyed it quite a bit. Now I'm trying to decide between rolling a hunter, druid, or rouge. And just so I don't get a bunch of "there is no best" replies, here's a list of what I'm looking for in a class:

Good at BG/Arena and PvP in general
A substantial amount of DPS
AoE isn't a huge concern
Being able to take a bit of damage would be nice, not a must tho.
Being a druid and healing a bit on the side would be cool, but also not a must.
More of a group player, but at the same time I don't wanna be the guy that gets his face melted every time his buddies aren't around.
Decently quick to level up. I'm happy as long as it won't take me an amazingly longgg time to work this character up to a decent level.

Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

Why not just keep playing your Druid? Just because you cancel your subscription doesnt mean the character no longer exists unless of course you deleted him.

Id say that if you intend on doing a fair amount of lvling solo go with a hunter. Good in pvp. Can get mail. Good dps. One of the fastest lvling classes.

I probably would just keep goin at it with my druid but I must've deleted that character cuz I cant seem to find him on my account when I look online. And thanks, I'll def take that into account when I finally make up my mind

maybe he wants something new?

but playing the same druid is a possibility, seeing that there's 25 dailies, sunwell instances, zul'aman, and Hyjal added since his departure.

With the description you provided, you would definitely like a Hunter or a Rogue. I have a hunter which is great for PVP, and groups. He does not have a big job in raids, I just stand there most of the time. I also have a Rogue which is great in DPS, and PVP. He is great for Arean and great for groups/raids.

Think about these and it might narrow things down for you:

Melee or ranged? Melee will have you taking more hits and can feel like you're in a fight more for some people. You're also more likely to exit a fight with lower hp.

Pet or not? I didn't want to deal with a pet when I started, so hunter and lock were right out. Some people LOVE their pets and would miss them.

Heal capable or not? You can go feral to level the druid and easily heal up if you're low at the end of a fight. A rogue can't (thought First Aid mitigates this). More key, the druid could tank or heal an instance depending on level, gear and spec.

The rogue is a pure damage dealer and is melee... I love my rogue, but as a pure class you have to be content with the limits. No combination of gear/spec will allow him to heal or tank.

I guess I dont really want to have a pet as a hunter, I played a hunter for a short amount of time when I used to play WoW and wasn't crazy about the pet aspect. Is it common or even worth it to play as a hunter without having much beast mastery or even having a pet at all? It doesn't seem like it would be but I may be wrong.

You can spec to not use a pet... but it's exactly that kind of question that I think will help you narrow things down. If you don't want to deal with a pet why pick a class where so many of its capabilities and some of its specs rely on the presence of a pet? Yes, you CAN melee as a hunter.... but why?

If I were you I'd rule out hunter and then decide whether you want another druid or something different. You could also look at a mage (ranged dps but like a rogue dps only) or a shadow priest (ranged dps and heals)

Wow...I never considered either of those but now that you mention them they sound extremely appealing. Now I guess its just time to decide between lots of DPS or not as much DPS and some healing abbilities.

I'd suggest reading up on the various classes a bit more. Especially on their off-specs.
If you liked the druid though, but want something different why not consider a shaman?

Like a druid they can do magical dps (Elemental), physical dps (Enhancement) and/or heal (Restoration). And the good part is, they don't need to shift to do it !
