I'm having trouble targetting. When my pet is fighting a critter, sometimes I have trouble getting targetted also. Any tips are appreciated.
Are you targeting with the mouse or keyboard? For a hunter, a simple macro to target, cast hunters mark and send in the pet is a great thing to have.

I'm trying to target with the mouse but many times I end up clicking my pet or not being able to get the sword up to target the critter for 5-10 secs which means I lose several shots.

if you pet is fighting a critter, you can macro /assist [pet] of if your pet has a name, you can put in his name, i believe.
and if you're targeting, use your TAB button.
OR if you accidentally click on your pet... PRESS F.

I don't know the first thing about macros.

I don't know the first thing about macros.
Macros are fairly simple to create. My problem was finding a concise guide to making macros that listed the commands and operators. You can download from lists of hundreds of pre-formatted macros for every category of class and type of action, then you can change them to fit your needs. Just give it a bit of a try and you'll find it's easier than you might think.

hehe. dont worry. just use TAB, or if you insist on using your mouse (which i think is a waste of a few seconds also), then press "F" whenever you accidentally click your pet.
this works for other things too. if you see someone fighting some mobs and need to help them on the mob they're taking down, click on them, then press F and you'll automatically target their target.

Actually, I tend to rely on the stickied threads on the official forums for figuring out macros. Anything else would be probably horribly outdated.

I tend to use the Tab key to select targets. If I want to assist my pet then I hit F1 twice (first selects me, second selects my pet) then F to assist.
There are a number of other tricks with assisting and targeting and macros, but the above are the ones I use 90% of the time.
Just use the tab key. Macros are easier once you know how to make them but the tab key lets you cycle through the various mobs that you are attacking.

Yes, I too often have trouble clicking the target. I mostly use Tab, but it isn't always that useful if you're not sure if you're targeting the right mob in a sea of spell effects. Raid marks and F are all tools to help w that though.

just something, in addition to the assist method, that hasn't been mentioned yet. It can happen that when your pet is attacking several mobs, that in the absence of any better information from you, that the pet can change target and attack a different mob.
This is bad, as you then generate more aggro on the one you're attacking, causing that mob to move towards you and away from the pet.
What I usually do, is to select the pet, select assist (f) and then press crtl-1. This forces the pet to attack the mob it's currently attacking and won't change as described above.
I find it useful anyway :-)

Top suggestion, I've been caught out by my pet switching targets a number of times.
