Hi fountains of knowledge ;) I'm lvl 38 now and was planning to get me one of those mighty mounts when I hit 40. But it costs 80-something G's is there some other way to get the riding training a quest or something, I'm not even close ta have that kind of money :(

Nope, there's only two classes that don't have to pay for their mounts: Warlocks and Paladins. What professions are you doing? You should have easily had over 100G at this point in the game.

Well I have done something wrong I only have 20 G. I skin and leatherwork but can you really make that kind of money.

I've always made plenty by doing Skinning and Mining. My first character made a ton of money by mining and skinning as I leveled. That and selling any greens, blues and vendor trash should easily make money. Finding a good BoE item can bring in a lot of cash on the auction house.

Later one I also played a little with buying low and selling high on the auction house to make additional income.

yes, you can EASILY get to 100+gold by level 40.

Play the AH, buying low and selling higher....or

Skin and SELL the leather, rather than using it yourself.

Mine ore, which sells like hotcakes to level 70's who want to level up jewelcrafting.

Pick up mining. In a week or so you will have enough for your mount.

I started a toon last week to play with some friends. At L18 I have equipped all 16 slot bags, bought a lot of armor from the AH, equipped my friends from the AH, and still have 35 gold on hand.

Just from selling ore and leather picked up in the course of doing quests not really trying hard. (Note, I never pass on a node even if its a little out of the way.)

Even without playing the AH (which isn't as easy for a beginner as many make it out to be) you should still have more than 20g by this point. My current toon is at level 38 with 57g, and I have yet to set foot in the auction house with him.

It's very important to loot absolutely everything you kill, and to carry enough bags so that you're not leaving loot behind. Even if you just sell everything you find to the vendors, by the time you're level 50 you'll have more than enough for your mount.

You have sold everything to vendors? Even greens and blues?

Never been in AH (constructively, by using an alt, or literally)?

I presume you have no gathering professions, then...

wow...

My 43 Draenei hunter was all by her lonesome on a server separate from all the rest of my toons. I mined and skinned and played the AH metals market to some extent. I figured out that on that server, bronze bars were going WAY above the costs of copper and tin, such that I bought copper and tin on the AH, reprocessed it into bronze, and made quite a bit of money that way. I also kept my eye out on key markets (wool cloth, for example) where items routinely sold high but you would occasionally see people dumping them for dirt cheap.

Also figure out whether ore or bars sell better. On her server, copper ore sold for significantly more than bars did. The one exception to all this was bronze bars.

I did buy gear on the AH (as a hunter I am perpetually short one bag, so having four netherweave bags became very important), though I kept my eye out for reasonably priced stuff. I didn't overpay for any gear I had, and I bought no blues.

By the time she was level 40, she had well over 400g in the bank.

This was good because she was also Exalted with all Alliance factions other than Gnomer, and wanted to buy each of the mounts she could ride.

And no, I had no 70 farming for me, received no gifts, and bought no gold. I did it entirely on focused farming on items I knew sold very well and playing the AH.

you're going to hate me when i tell you how much gold my druid has. she's the only character (apart from a bank alt) in my server too... and i can buy my level 60 mount if i wanted to. i made this all through selling ores, stones, gems, and leathers. i did get lucky one day and got a low level blue. sold it for 25 gold. but thats just about... 5% of my total.

Ahem... slight correction on that. :embarassed: I have 27g, not 57g. But still, 100g by Level 50 or so is completely doable, if I remember my last toon correctly. I have leatherworking only. I vendor greens, and I haven't yet seen a blue item drop with this character.

Since we're sharing stories. I started on a new server (new in Feb 2008) and at level 56 I have over 1500G. That includes buying gear/potions from the AH. I have mining and skinning on my main and my bank alt just watches the auction house for bargains and resells for profit. I've had maybe 3 blue items drop the most valuable of which sold last night for 66G.

Out of curiosity, what is your true /played, right now, on this character?

When I started my troll it was on a brand new server. I wanted to do leatherworking, but I started with skinning and mining, saved the leather in the bank, and sold the ore. Within 2 weeks I had 200g saved up, dropped mining, and picked up lw. Processed all my leather scraps in to light leather, and was up to 150 lw within a few minutes.

Crafting professions are really money sinks - you have to gather and sell your mats on the AH if you really want to get decent money. Now - once you have some capital to work with you can play the AH to keep the money flow coming - this is what I did with my troll (made a bank alt to do this with) so that I could continue with leatherworking without worrying about cash flow. I now have my mount, a couple hundred gold to play with, and several hundred more gold on my bank/AH alt - at lvl 44.

One more VERY important piece of advice: Do NOT buy gear on the AH while leveling. Bags yes - get the best bags you can afford. Other than that MAYBE a weapon - your gear should be fine with quest rewards, world drops, and drops from instances.

I confess though - with all the surplus cash I have made I did outfit myself with some decent mail armor from the AH when I hit lvl 40 and could wear mail. Found a complete set of good armor (a set that drops in ZF I believe) - think I spent maybe 25g for the whole outfit - but then I have the money to afford something like that.

Out of curiosity, what is your true /played, right now, on this character?

On my level 56, it is 8 days, 9 hours. That's a lot of AFK time. I don't log off or exit when I take breaks. That includes running instances as well.

I had mining on the first character I ever got to level 40. I was pretty much able to buy my regular mount on Steel Bars alone.

Although that was before they reduced the leveling requirements.

Skins can sell decently. Try and stay around the average price and go from there. Don't undercut or overprice all that drastically with skins though. Otherwise you'll not be making profits. Skinning is the easiest profession given how common beasts are, so just keep around the average price and you can easily nickel and dime your way up there.

I would like to point out that the levelling speed increases makes it harder to make money. You level too fast, and often are in zones questing before you can mine the nodes there etc.

My new 40 didn't have enough for her mount, but then again I didn't play the AH or sell THAT much, just the odd potions/greens etc. But i have a 70 so its all good :)

Id recomend two gathering professions, mining and skinning are mine, and getting the add-on called Auctioneer, run it once or twice a week when in the AH and it'll give you the right prices to sell things at. Makes working the AH alot easier.

Another thing to note, on my first toon to get 40, I didn't get the mount until about 43, 44 I think.

I was insanely wealthy until I decided to power level my dwarf hunter in engineering.

Now all my gold has been transformed into a bunch of crappy devices no one else but other folks who can make the same crappy devices can use. And I'm one level off being able to take the next stage in training so there goes some more money..
