View Full Version : Keep diying at Gruul
Rogue here, did Gruuls at least 10 times, with guild and pug, and I keep diying during shatter. I have DBM, I know the fight, and I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.
Being melee I am there with the tanks, on one side or at the back of course, it seems to me that when he throws people in the air it's anybody's guess where you land, and have only a very short time to get away from each other before you cannot move anymore.
I tried to get away a second before he actually starts the whole thing, but then healers scream that i will be positioned too close to them and kill them. I tried to stay right under Gruul when he starts the thing, and steer the best I can away from others. Sooner or later i die.
I either have bad luck or i got the whole fight wrong. Please help.

During flight, turn around and look where you're going.
Find a free spot and aim for it.
It's fairly easy to survive 3 people clumped up as long as your health is okay.

it is completely random, your only chance is to have fast reactions and see where you fly to, see who else is flying in that direction and where free space will be. as long as you do ok and the others arent blind either you should be fine.

Also, don't forget that as a rogue you can use CLoS to avoid the slow-down effect. You'll still receive the shatter damage but it should make maneuvering away from everyone else a bit easier. CLoS is on a short enough timer that I seem to be able to use it every time Gruul does his ground slam.

Ah that's a good one, thank you, never thought to use CoS, will do next time.

I think it's DBM that does it, but I have a "too close" indicator. Occasionally, the best thing you can do is stand still and let others move away from you.
Whatever you do, move away from the tank and healers. And if you see the timer coming up, check your hp. If you're not topped off, bandage. Don't rely on the healers... top yourself off. That way if you get grouped with others you might survive.

And maybe work on some stamina gear. Unless you are consistently landing amidst 2 or more other people I think you should be able to survive the shatter. And if you are doing that then you really need to work on your positioning more cos there is no excuse for it.

positioning before shatter has nothing to do with where you land during shatter itself, it is completely random.
and about the hp set : i normaly have 7.5k life unbuffed on my priest and i can survive 2 or even 3 people going off next to me when shatter hits. so i dont know exacty what the OP does, they must be running around in groups all he time.

Yes, sorry. I meant where you end up for the shatter rather than where you land.
And whenever I read the thread title I picture someone putting up some shelves or fixing a tap in Gruul's Lair. DIYing at Gruul.

Lord knows that place could use some DIY. Some drapes would really liven up that cave.

Heck just sweeping out after all of the cave-ins...

I have a bit over 9k health unbuffed, with raid buffs i get to over 11k. I can survive 1-2 shatters but usually one will get me eventually. And if I have 3-4 people (or more) too close to me I usually die for sure.
I see it as a matter of positioning most of all, the fight is pretty straightforward, in all groups I've been in we definitely had enough dps to down him, but when we wiped it was because of this shatter mess.
Next time I'll try CoS and making sure I'm topped off health-wise before each shatter. Thank you for the discussion.

yeah, 3-4 will usuall kill most anyone. ONe of the lessons of Gruul, though, is that DPS needs to look out for their own health too. In Kara this isn't really true - except on certain fights where your group is just at the gearing level to beat it, you shouldn't need to use healing pots, stones etc to keep you alive. In 25 mans that's less true, esp when a lot of the raid takes damage at once. I imagine this gets better later as healers have more practice in dealing with it, but when I go in Gruul I always ask for locks to do wells of health stones, bring pots, make sure I have bandages, etc. If you're at 1/3 health and not gettingheals, pop a pot, a HS or bandage. Yes, you're pausing your dps... but if you die you do no damage.

Shatter positioning takes a little practice. This may be obvious to you, but if not:
Zoom right out, and when you're flying through the air spin your camera so that you have a top-down view. This will make it relatively easy to see where other people are. Try to spot a clear space while you're still flying so that by the time you land you're facing the right way and hitting the ground running. Literally.

how much health do you have before shatter, what are your healers doing prior?

Probably concentrating on the tanks...
In a group just learning Grull, except at the beginning of the fight there will be very little, if any, healing available for non-tanks. dps need to keep themselves alive.
That said, Ash does have a good point - are you going into the shatters with 8k health, or with 2k? It's common to take a little damage from them, by being moderately close to one person perhaps, and you need to survive that.

Cloak of skills wins that fight for rogues. Only thing you should have to worry about in the end is not to eat hurtfullstrikes.
Or how to dodge tank the last few percentages of his life as he starts to get big enough to use you as a toothpick.
We have 8-9 healers usually, so I would say there are plenty of heals, maybe not very skilled heals sometimes. Besides, there are some aoe silence periods where healers are shut down. I do pot and bandage, I am pretty sure I am going into shatters with full health, I am going to pay more attention to this next time. In general as a rogue I expect little from healers, I always have pots and plenty of bandages, and I am constantly aware of my health bar.
The biggest problem I have is getting away from people in time before I get stoned.

Sounds like you've got the right idea :-)
Zoom out, point your camera straight down, and you'll get there with practice.

Big success ... Downed Gruul without diyng. CoS did it for me. Thank you for this discussion, it helped me tremendously.

It all comes with practice. I used to have to do it with 5k health, but 1/2 of it is having the luck to not get sent into a cluster**** with 5 other people, and the other part is getting away from that said cluster****.
