New Rogue

I'm new to the WoW game and I have a couple questions.

First, my character is a lvl 15 Rogue Blood Elf [female if that makes a difference] with Skinning & Leatherworking as my primairies and First Aid and Fishing as my secondairies.

I keep hearing that rogues are really good with poisons and that at some later level they can poison their weapons. Do I need alchemy for this or is it a rogue trait?

Pickpocketing: Whenever I try that in game it says "Invalid target" what are some good targets or areas that I can use to try it out? Does picking an enemies pocket increase XP?

No you do not need alchemy to get poisons its a rogue specific thing.
Pickpocketing works on HUMANOID targets only and it does NOT increase XP only gives you a little bit extra cash (usually a few copper or silver depending on targets level) and occasionally a item/lockbox.

You will get a quest for poisons right around lvl 18. If you are Alli you pick up the quest from Mathias Shaw in Stormwind - not sure where horde gets it. Once you complete the quest you will have the poison skill.

As far as pickpocketing goes you can pickpocket humanoids only. It may not seem like much coin but it is in addition to whatever you loot and it definitely adds up over time. The higher level the mob the more cash you get. As you get to higher levels you will get lockboxes so you can keep your lockpicking skill up (aquired at lvl 20) plus you will get supplies for making poisons so it's a VERY good idea to get in the habit of pickpocketing whenever possible.

I keep a macro on my rogue that will pickpocket, loot, and do an attack all with the press of a button.

this might sound bad, but i did run into it when i first started. you're less likely to fail a pickpocket when you're OUT of the line of sight of the mob you're trying to pickpocket, and if you fail a pickpocket, stealth is stripped. i'd recommend starting with things like Amani, Grimscale, and Wretched mobs.

Sure. A real simple one is

/cast pick pocket
/stopcasting
/cast ambush

You can sub any attack you want for ambush. You have to make sure autoloot is turned on though.

You no longer need /stopcasting for a macro but it still helps for this one - if you don't use the /stopcasting sometimes it won't grab the loot and will only get the coins.

The quest giver for Horde is one of the Rogue trainers in Orgrimmar. I have a feeling that the quest becomes available at level 20.

Yes, the poison quest becomes available at 20. The lockpicking quest starts at 16.
