So my friends finally convinced my to buy WoW and I already have a class and race picked out (I think), and I installed the actual game, but then it automatically downloads the patches all at once which apparently will take 19 hours.
My question is, is there any way for me to download the patches indivually so it doesn't take that long, or will I have to just bear and grin it?

sounds like you have a bad net connection and also was unlucky on picking a bad time to dl the patches. it took me just over 1 hour on a new pc last week to update from scratch
Look for the full update patch for 2.4 on a site like FileFront. You may get better speeds than with the Blizzard updater.

Once you've downloaded them remember to burn them onto a dvd or put them on an external HD.... next time it'll take minutes rather than hours.

Are you playing on a dial up connection? I reinstalled the game on my PC a few days ago and had it up and running in prob about an hour and a half to two hours. That included the install DVD's and a few patchs (via cable modem)
Some days their patch server (if it even is a sep server) seems to be really slow though. You may want to try again and see if it goes a little faster. 19 hours seems really long.

Last time i had to do a new install it took me many hours to update the client. I think they've changed the disks now to include most of the patches. Your friends may have been right a few months ago, but it should be a lot quicker now :)

Also, in some cases, patch updates are MUCH quicker if you turn OFF peer-to-peer. The direct HTTP dl from blizzard is much faster if it goes on its own, especially for older updates.
I did a completely new install recently, and it took four hours, from start to finish...updates and all.

Oh, and by the way OP - Welcome to WoW!

I had the same problem a few months back. I don't have a DVD drive so I had to download from the website.
Once I read the part about disabling peer to peer and did it, the download went much much faster. It may not make much sense but try to disable peer to peer if you are downloading from Blizzard.

LOL....If my latency jumps, I turn off my wireless(I use the wired portion of the router), and wait for the kids to come in storming mad.....

If my latency drops, I'm off fixing whatever server decided it needed more bandwidth than I require it to use.

A tip for you all,
If you have the patches on one computer, you could simply transfer them from one pc to another by linking them up in network and sharing, or simply put them on a CD and install them from there.
You can find the patches under C:/Program Files/World of Warcraft/ then you can select the patch(S). You only need the actual patch, and not the other thing that comes with it.
Hope this helped.

My roommate and I do that all the time. I just go and pick up his newly-downloaded patch from his computer.
