shouldnt be 5 mb. it should be several gigs.
the "trial" version requires the actual game. your account will be considered "trial" but the game is still the same game. once you pay though, your "trial" account will turn into a paid account and you'll have access to a bunch of other things. there is no difference between the "clients" for paid account gamers and trial account gamers.
i suggest to go to walmart and buy the dvd for $2.99. it has the full game and a trial code. you'll get 10 or 15 days to play as a trial account, and all you're paying for is the price of the dvd and the cheap case it comes in.
or... if your friend already has WoW.... COPY is wow folder to your computer.
you will run WoW fine. just make sure you sign up for a "trial" account to log in to.

ok.... but apparently my friends (3 of them) dl it with only several mb. btw does it have any affect that if you already had the original WoW on their computer?

The trial and retail versions of the game are the same The difference lies in how you setup your account through Blizzard, which is separate from the software itself.
If they already had wow installed then the 5MB must have just been a patch. If any of them have the game disks you can use them to install the game and then pay for your own account when the trial period expires.
Aside from this I'm not sure what the issue would be unless they are doing something against the games end user contract.

they might have been downloading patches.
and no, none of their characters will show up. when you first open the game you have to log in, once you log in, blizzard will know what information to send you, including any of the characters you might have. none of the characters are stored in any one's computer. so no, you wont have any of their data. but if they have addons, you might want to see which addons they have and see if you want to keep any of them. apart from the addons folder, and the wtf folder (which holds their settings just in case they do log on using your computer) every wow player has the same client.

If you download the downloader, that is quite small. But trust us when we have been saying that the trial version of the game, and the retail version of the game are identical files, and take up just as much hard drive space.

Sounds like your friend downloaded the Trial Client Downloader (which is only a few MB)...
The Trial Client (which is the FULL client) is several GB.

UImm... yeah. That's not real. Most likely, your friend downloaded the downloader, which then pulled the full client download through it.

I've never seen any such "streaming" idea for Blizzard's client. You can't stream WoW (I'll hold this claim until there is proof otherwise). You can download, either normal or through the file-sharing protocol called Bittorrent, but streaming is crazy-talk. Provide proof, or else I'll say it isn't real. There's way too much textures, polygons, music, and sound files that need to be transferred, beyond the UI elements and such as well... plus the various zones, creatures, items, etc.... no... streaming is unrealistic in the extreme.

Brian, you can download the stream version of the game from the wow website
http://www.wow-europe.com/en/downloads/classic/index.html
the link above is to ths streaming page where you can download the wowstream file which will download the neccessary files to let you play so you can play WoW on the go.
just select your language type and whether you have a mac comptuer or pc and you are set.
and just for Xlorep DarkHelm
"New players can download this streaming version of the game-client which will allow them to jump quickly into the game while additional content is downloaded in the background"

I guess I am mistaken then. Interesting, and quite clever of Blizzard to do that...

I've seen this... my friend downloaded the streaming version over a month ago and although slow to run, it did enable him to be playing WoW very very quickly. It gave him a taste and he signed up within the hour (so a quick win for Blizzard)

I did that by accident once, and it was actually quite annoying.
Much easier to just download the full client and play from there. For a while you could only download the stream thing, and you had to set it to actually download fully instead and it was really, really slow.
(I've downloaded the client at least 10 times).

I'm new but I thought I'd put in my thoughts as well. I totally agree with Moo Cow. It's easier to just download the actual game and update patches, then to keep downloading the streaming. You'd be saving yourself alot of time and one heck of a headache by just downloading the full client. Yes, I also think that Blizzard was smart for doing such a thing, but need to get it to top speed so players don't have the headache of downloading it over and over again.

I'm wondering if the client changed at all?
I'm trying to help people on another board and they're saying things like needing a code to active the trial client, and being told by the game that they need to install the full version of the game when they upgrade their account with a key they bought.
This was never the case for me - so I'm confused. Did it change in the last month or two?

there's actually two: the orginal, and tbc. with tbc, there's more stuff in it so it requires a new download or install. that's all i know that's different, otherwise, everything is the same.

The client software itself (actual running program) is the same. However the data for the zones (creatures, etc) you can only reach with TBC is not included in the trial client. The "upgrade" simply is downloading the rest of the content, no actual changes in anything else.
