So I posted this on the WotLK subforum, but not many people read that, so I will ask again. I dont raid and can rarely run heroics due to time constraints. I mainly craft my own epics and was wondering where they stood in relation to this whole "tier" system of gear. My gear is like this:

mage: full frozen shadow weave set
dps warr: Lionheart executioner
alt warr: breastplate of kings (working on the next upgrade)
rogue: full primalstrike set

so whereabouts do these fall in the tier system? And please dont call me nub for crafting epics, its one of my main sources of enjoyment in WoW, next to getting owned in BG's. There is some sentimental value attached to the stuff I make, the Lionheart has seen many, many battles.

Technically, they're a good bit below even tier 4 when looking at itemlevel. Itemlevel determines the budget of stats allowed to an item. The problem with ranking items according to itemlevel is ofc that this budget can be used for any stat. This means items with a well spent budget can come out better than higher level gear. This is certainly the case for the tailoring sets as a start.

The main drawback of some of these items is that they've taken out one stat a tiered item typically would would have completely or that they at least are low on something. Otoh, the crafted sets are typically very heavy on your primary stats like +dmg or +healing. Combined with the usually poorly itemized tier 4 sets people tend to stick with tailoring sets for quite a while, even into tier 5/6 content. "When to replace FSW/Spellstrike/PMC" is a common question among raiders.

I can't really answer for the other sets, but I know the bulwark of kings doesn't come out quite as well.

The final tiers of the blacksmiting weapons will vary a lot depending on specc, class etc, but they equal roughly what you can expect to find in tier 5 content if not a bit better. Itemlevels 107/123/136 compared to season 2s itemlevel 136 and non endbosses dropping weapons at 134 in SSC/TK.

Again, a lot comes down to exactly what stats they put on the weapon and a lot will vary with class, specc and purpose. What you have access to also determines gear choices ofc.

Thanks for the very informative response! I guess I stack up ok with what is available to me. Also, I would strongly agree that the crafted items do lack a LOT of stats. The primalstrike set has very good attack power, but not much for agil/stam. The tailoring set is roughly the same, very good frost damage, but the int/stam arent the best. I sincerely hope that when Wrath is released, there are some improvements to the endgame craftables. I dont expect them to be better than raid drops, but they should at least qualify you to get into the raids and survive without being a hindrance to the group. I mean, when you consider the amount of gold/mats/time that goes into a crafted set, you should at least get some utility out of them rather than being replaced by a heroic blue. Thats just my 2 cents because I am biased towards crafting.

1) the craftables are excellent (at least the LW and dps caster sets). The latter can easily take you into T6 if you're unlucky with drops. The PS set is excellent to start Kara with and it will take you through that instance and into the T4 25 mans easily. You'll replace it in Kara probably (I did) but if things don't drop for you it's fine. Its main issue is the lack of sockets.

2) Sorry, but you don't get to both ask a question about how good they are and then rant about how bad they are. Pick one, but if you know enought to rant, the question's not needed.

3) Please don't ask the same thing in several places. I just answered the same question from you in the BoJ thread. ASk once and then...

4) You can't expect answers within minutes. Wait a bit for people to have a chance to reply before posting again. Oh and see #3
