Ok, so I have been messing around with old school instances because when I started playing WoW, nobody would bother running them as outlands was the easier route to get gear/gold. I recently ran scholo and found it to be fun and challenging and I made alot of money for not much time. I figured I would try Stratholme as I have never been inside and had no idea what I was walking into.

So I should have figured something was up when I first went into the instance. You cant get out. The only way out (if you dont have the key to the city) is hearthing. Oh well, I forget that and move on. First pull is no less than 5 mobs, but they are just trash, not even elite so they never knew what hit them (I am on my arms warrior, im pretty ruthless). I get to the next pull, huge group of around 7-8 mobs, 3 are elite ghouls. I manage to destroy them with about 1/4 health left, but I notice I have a disease that ticks for 150 health every 10 seconds and reduces health regeneration by 100%, and it lasts for 10 minutes...

After I die from the disease, I decide I need some way of cleansing. Had to hearth and get some jungle remedies, bought out the AH in IF and headed back. So now Im angry, get back into the instance and charge the next pull. Sadly there is a patrolling ghoul in the mix who also aggros some invisible wraith thing who, in turn, spawns 2 elite gargoyle things. I manage to smash a few baddies down but they overwhelm me and I end up corpse running back, now pretty much fuming.

I realize that even though this is old school, i need to be careful. I start watching the pats, but it looks like they always chain pull something. I can see why nobody does this instance, its a complete mess. Anyways, i finally fight my way through to this church looking building. Kill a miniboss and he drops "key to the city" hooray, now i can use the backdoor!. I also notice the mobs wont aggro unless you pretty much walk right through them, so I can skip all the massive pulls of disease giving ghouls and look around some more. Lastly, I dont know if its a glitch, but when I have 2 diseases on me and chug a jungle remedy, it doesnt dispell either of them. Happened 2 times.

I walk into "the dead side" or the gauntlet, and notice there is no way to skip all the pulls, there is just too much trash, pats and monsters clogging the way. I start pulling and somehow manage to aggro the entire instance. I die shortly after. Corpse run back (go through the gate, not the main entrance, its way faster) and try again. i manage to slowly clear all the junk, the pulls are really easy if you can avoid the gargoyle pats. I basically 2-3 shot most mobs, always have full rage, whirlwind, cleave, mortal strike, execute. Crits are flyin around like crazy, Im totally covered in spattered blood and theres a trail of undead bodies left in my wake.

I find a rare elite spawn called "stonespine" and slaughter him without mercy. Cant remember what he dropped. Get to this boss called Nerub'akan or something. He puts up a decent fight, drops some plate gloves which are BoE i believe. I auctioned them for around 20 gold.

I slowly work my way around the gauntlet, killing all the minibosses, and going in to clear out the ziggurats. When I kill the last guy (some Pallid or something) i see this gate open up. I peek inside and see around 20 stitched horror dudes waddling around in this huge courtyard. Yummy scourge!

I kill them all (they are actually fairly tough) and as I kill the last one, This big dude called Ramstein comes out and I am stuck in combat with low health. I die, almost decide to quit, but run back, run to ramstein, eat some food, then slay him. I have very low health after the fight, and am immediately set upon by a massive wave of skeletons. I die again. Never even saw the baron. How many waves are there? sheesh, this place sucks.

On the other hand, I did the "scarlet side" without dying once, much more enjoyable, farmed 7 righteous orbs (sell for about 40-50 gold on my server) and various other blues/greens and about 200 runecloth. Did wipe on Cannon Master Willy though, but I did him last so I killed the Scarlet Crusade head honcho dude, cant remember his name because he wasnt hard at all. I have 2 questions to those of you who managed to read this whole thing:

1. Do the skellies keep spawning before the baron, or can I kill them and get out of combat to heal?

2. How do you kill Cannon Willy? do you have to use the cannonballs and shoot the cannon? I kept taking damage from some unseen source, and I noticed you can "use" the cannonballs and the cannons.

To conclude, stratholme would suck SO BAD as a group of 5 60's. For me, It was ok fun, the scarlet side is easy and very profitable, and after my repair bills and autions, I made around 500 gold. Warning - Not for the faint of heart!!!

I believe you only get one wave of Skeleton's pre-Baron. On Baron, Skeletons spawn until he's dead, just stay out of the circle, I think that causes more to spawn, I'm not 100% sure if it causes them to completely stop.

Strath used to be a 10-man instance that was actually fun and enjoyable, nearly everyone loved it and Scholo and farmed both constantly, along with UBRS. When they dropped it to a 5-man, it immediately became a ghost town, same with Scholo. UBRS was run once in awhile as well, but still nothing compared to it's old glory.

Live Side is by far the smarter choice if you're looking for tons of gold.

:grin:Strat is a great instance... Brings back good old memories from when my old guild did the crazy thing of taking on this place 5-man (around patch 1.4 or so when the place was still a 10-man). A few wipes, but we cleared the whole place. /nostalgia off

On topic, it's not too hard to solo once you get to know the place and the pulls/bosses/events. If you haven't done it much before (as a 5-man, 10-man or other) it might take a try or two to get the hang of how it works.

To answer your questions:

1. When you enter the slaughterhouse you have to fight all the abominations. Fight them away from the door leading in to Baron himself, as this will let you get a few seconds to drink/bandage after you've killed them all and Ramstein appears. he will not aggro if you're far enough away.

After Ramstein there's the huge wave of non-elite skellies. Take these out with a Stratholme Holy Water, or just aoe them down. Not too hard if you're a bit prepared.

After the wussy-skellies, 5 elite skeleton guards will spawn at the doorway to Baron, starting to partol the area. Make sure you kill the previous wave a bit away from here (just like the abominations) so they don't aggro on spawning.

After that, the Baron is next. I'll leave it to you to figure him out

2. Killing the Cannon Master isn't too hard, but can be a bit tricky depending on class. The tricky bit is: After you start the fight, ranged mobs will spawn at the end of the corridor (this would be the "invisible" damage source you mentioned). In the old days, one person would be on cannon-duty while the rest took down Willey. Obviously, when soloing, you'll have to do both, unless you can dps him down really quick. Pick up a cannon ball and use a cannon to fire. Really easy with a hunter (pet keeps Willey busy while I fire the cannons), but should be doable with other classes as well. And he drops a really neat trinket as well every once in a while.

Also, when doing strath, if an Eye of Naxxramas spawns, kill it ASAP. These are the "spectres" you mentioned summoning tons of gargoyles. They goes down from approx one hit, but they become really troublesome if they get to live long enough to summon gargs.

Good luck, and enjoy fighting the Baron. Used to be my favorite 5-man boss for quite some time.

Thanks for the tips. I have heard alot about UBRS, but I have never been there. Is it right by BRD or how do you get there? Also, what level is Dire Maul? Again, I have never stepped foot in there and would like to go make a mess of the place, but want to make sure it will net me some good cash as its pretty far away.

A funny story though in my trials of strat. I didnt know you needed the "scarlet key" from SM to get into the Bastion in Live side, So i quickly sped over to SM, tore a strip through the place and got the key. Along the way, I think it was Herod who dropped "Tigerstrike mantle" a level 29 blue BoE cape with agil/stam. When I saw this im like - twink item- so I search the AH, wouldnt you know, there was one posted for 350g. I lol'ed big time, and posted mine for 320g. It sold in under an hour. Not bad for just rushing through killing 20 mobs at a time.

Strat was covered, but there's one or two more things worth mentioning. The abos will start walking towards the gate one at the time and patrol around the courtyard if you don't pick them up. This is a scripted event that can bug out making all of them respawn and stopping the rest of the event. You'll have to reset if this happens. Might be caused by one or more abos getting to the gate without being killed, but this is just speculation.

Baron has MS and spawns skeletons he will kill to gain health unless you take them out (deathcoil Warcraft RTS style). They have next to now health, so no worries.

You don't have to kill anything except bosses and the things that spawn gargoyles untill you get to the abos, but it's hard and I usually screw it up a few times when I do it on my hunter (<3 FD).

UBRS is the upper wing of L(ower)BRS. There's a lower entrance and a shortcut. If you run up instead of down the chain that leads out to the middle of the lava you can jump off to a ledge. Go right under the chain and there will be a balcony you can jump onto. You're now in front of the entrance to UBRS/LBRS. Once inside you'll have LBRS to your right and UBRS behind a locked gate to your left. The door will open if you have the seal of ascension (ring). You can get it from a quest in LBRS:
http://wowdigger.com/quest/view/4742

UBRS is tuned for 10 60s. The second room requires 3 people to press a thingy that releases a boss that opens the next door when killed. Soloing it will require very decent gear and not even possible with all classes. LBRS is very managable solo even if some places are a bit icky.

Can't remember exactly what levels DM east is meant for, but it's 55ish (give or take a few). It doesn't require any key and you'll get the key for the other wings by chasing an imp that can be found right inside to the left when entering from the courtyard. This does involve a lot of clearing ofc and you will have to fight him at the end. Should be easily soloable.

West and North are linked together by a library with it's own faction. They deal with librams, class trinkets (54 req) and the Quel'serrar. They are two very different instances however. West has a number of crystal pylons you need to destroy to release a boss which in turn makes the last boss hostile. This is also a quest you'll be able to pick up somewhere along the way.

North has the famous Tribute run. I'm sure you can find out more than enough about how to do it by searching through old posts or googling. Basically you're trying to avoid killing the guards (minibosses). The less you kill, the more drops you get from a chest that spawns after you've killed the last boss.

Both west and north were meant for experienced 60s. Things hit harder than scholo/strat, mechanics/mobs are more complex and levels of mobs and bosses are higher. Still worth seeing tho :)

That's enough from me I guess. Had this as a hobby and I'm sleepless, hehe

hmm you complain about strat now ? ^^

this place was nerfed about a gazilion times. i can easily solo it with my mage nowadays. the trash is so light, you can skip nearly all of it.

back when we first hit 60, molten core was way out of reach, the place was not nerfed back then and you were happy for even a blue item, it was hard. damn hard.

but nowadays, the only reason to go back to strat is the mount that the baron can drop. it is sexy, and i know quite a few people who farmed it after getting bored at 70.

Yeah, it was nerfed BADLY from essentially the start. Good thing I started it back when it was a 10-man and nerfed quite a bit to the point where it was essentially 1/2 free blues (With the occasional death.)

haha, thanks for the posts guys. I am intrigued by Dire Maul now. I may just take a walk through of the place on the weekend. But I also feel I should finish strat off, I just cant have unfinished business like that. Plus you do make mad cash, once all your auctions sell, especially the righteous orbs from the live side. Basically I do my dailies and then just mess around, only 1500g away from my first epic flyer.
