I have never played WoW but have sold a copy of Burning Crusade that I acquired but the person I sold it to is complaining that it did not come with a serial number. Could someone please confirm if a serial number is required to upgrade to the Burning Crusade expansion pack?

Yes it is (otherwise you could just share one copy between lots of accounts).
It is usually stuck inside the plastic DVD case (not the outer cardboard box) and it is generally found under the CDs though it could also be under the instruction manuals.

Same as with wow classic the Burning Crusade disks themselves are actually nearly worthless in sales value. Blizzard actually wants you to give them to as much people as you can. In fact, they're freely downloadable from dozens of websites.
The serial numbers are what you pay for and they are one-time use for activating the purchased content. Once used they are even more worthless than the disks.
Keep that in mind when buying (ESPECIALLY when buying) and/or selling them.

Yep, the game is worthless on the second hand market. It's a one use key you're paying for, the disk's software is free and legal to download straight off the net, once the key has been used the whole package is worthless. He just bought software he couldn't use off you, because the key has already been used and now won't work again, one time use only. Thus, I'd give the guy his money back.

It is an assumption yes. I found it strange that he used the term "aquired" rather than bought as to how he came upon the expansion. You're right, it's nothing certain until he confirms it wasn't a sealed-box sale, if it was open it was almost certainly used.

i bet you he got it as a gift, then had no clue what to do with it. look at the back of the manual or the bottom right corner of the CD jacket.
