Is there any information out there about what event they may have for opening the expansion? If not what do you think will happen and where?

I believe Darnassus will be attacked/destroyed, I think I read something about a quest 'seeking revenge for Darnassus'.
I'm probably wrong though!

Yeah I read the Darna thing also.
And I came across some details of an attack on Undercity, some NPCs to die also. I just browsed over it though, because I didnt want too many spoilers.
Darnassus and Orgrimmar are being razed..by who, I don't know. Is it an opening event? I don't know. It may happen as you progress in levels, because Blizzard uses a "flag" system for the expansion apparently, which mean a lv 1-70 would see Orgrimmar as it is, but somebody advanced in levelling to the events of the invasion / assault sees a besieged Orgrimmar.
Haven't experienced this on the beta servers, gathered it from a forum discussion, so don't sue me :)

It's anyway said by blizzard to be more awesome than the TBC opening event

Does anyone have any concrete evidence of anything that is said to be happening in the opening event? I'd be very interested to find out ^ ^

I know many of the first Beta quests refer to Ogrimarr being assulted. However, Ogrimarr itself looked fine when I went there.

I'd love to see some of the same style instance mobs added like the Naxx event (which I missed)

It's 100% true that at least 2 capitals will be MAJORLY attacked, to the point of near-destruction by Arthas and The Scourge. That is when a few of the leaders (Sylvanas, Hellscream's Son, etc. etc.) go to Northrend to deal with this assault to stop them from sending more to completely destroy the capitals.

I wonder if they will look damaged? There's talk of Darnassus and Orgrimmar being razed, that means more or less destroyed doesn't it. And I heard about an assault on Undercity too. Maybe it'll just be all the major cities again like the Naxx event.

They could use the phasing approach they used in the DK starting area, but that was a way of transparently sending us between instacnes. Or they could have attacks which we all need to defend against. For actaul destruction of the cities to take place they'd need to make the buildings destructible.. mmmm.

I just hope the event lasts long enough for me to take part in!
Don't read this as it contains spoilers

It is not so much that UC is assaulted, but rather Varimathras (possibly Sylvannas too?) revolts and Vol'jin is send as temporary ruler of UC)

I know you warned me.... but WHAT?!?!?!?! Revolts as in leaves the Horde or revolts as in "I think we need to go to northrend and thrall is too busy trying to join the mag'har"
Man, I don't want my favorite queen to become a backstabbing beotch (I know she's shady but not a total backstabber, yet).
Pffff...now you spoiled it for others ^^
She gets a new model too...Lazy Blizzard...Sylvanas with a NE model was always wrond anyhow...

I knew about the new model, but I can't find any info on this other thing you are talking about
Edit
OMG I just saw a ton of stuff on this. My fears have been eased, and I have found for me THE feature of WotLK. This brings together the best elements of BC with Azeroth and Wrath...... holy crap!

I think they'll use that "Phasing" system they use for the deathknight areas? at least they are kinda ooo looky at that.

The video I saw of what det was talking about appeared to use the phasing system. But the more I dug into it the less I think it is an opening event but just a badass quest chain.
I am seriously more jazzed about this than DK's. I'm going to level my main and try to get to this quest chain as fast as possible.

It's the final chapter of a bad-ass quest chain, and in fact there is a cinematic to close it off which Blizzard haven't quite got in yet.
I'm not going to give out any spoilers myself, but suffice to say that long lore-driven chains pushing on the storyline are here to stay in Wrath of the Lich King.
ADDED:
In terms of 'proof' that something is happening or going to happen, there are a load of Argent Dawn Healers kicking around starter areas (or rather, Stormwind at least) which points to a heavy incursion by the Scourge. I'm tempted to say 'Scourge Invasion 2' (http://www.wowwiki.com/Scourge_Invasion) with testing in the Beta much closer to Wrath's release date, but I could be wrong.
