View Full Version : Spying...your thoughts?

I apologise if this is covered elsewhere, is something of a vague topic so difficult to search for!

I've recently given in to my alt-aholism yet again, and made myself a little Orc shaman. He's currently at the Crossroads, everybodies favourite stamping ground. Over the course of my time there, I noticed there were a couple of higher level folk loitering around - nothing new there, I've done the same while helping friends myself. They didn't seem to move much, but again I assumed that they were talking, or whatever. I saw them most of the time I popped back to drop off quests, etc.

However, I started to notice that when they logged off, within 5 minutes the Crossroads would be under attack. They would also only do this when there were no higher level horde around. Took me a while to notice that they were gone every time, but it was the same rogue attacking, too... I decided that as it was hampering my questing, I brought my warlock on, and saw this rogue off a couple of times, and decided to leave my 'lock in the inn there.

When the horde characters got back on, I got a LOT of abuse from them both, telling me to leave them alone and let them get on with it. I ignored this, as they were attacking quest-givers, and every time they logged off, I logged on to my lock and did my best to get rid of them. More and more abuse hurled at me when they logged back on to their horde characters.

So...that's my long-winded way of asking the good people here what you think of this practise? Using a character of the correct faction to spy on a town (PvE server, by the way), then when it is clear logging on to the enemy faction and killing everything in sight? Personally, I think it's kind of sad, as they seem to be doing it only to spoil others enjoyment...Your thoughts, good people of the forums?

The way you describe it, I agree with you 100%: it's a sad, childish thing to only attack when you're sure you won't meet any resistance. While I'm all for the clever using of alts to co-ordinate an attack on an enemies' stronghold, I hate people attacking in lower level areas and especially killing quest givers so people who want to do some honest levelling get thwarted. I applaud you for fighting them the same way they were harassing you and the Crossroads.

Thanks for that Ptarn, good to know I have some support on this one! Attacking a major capital is one thing, but a low level area, and a prominent hub for up and coming characters...well, just seems childish to me too.
I've seen people attacking solely the guards there, in what I assume is an attempt to draw a bunch of horde 70's out for a good old fight - that doesn't bother me at all, as it doesn't stop anyone from progressing and playing the game. Quite often those battles are ended with salutes and cheers between the two factions, which is good!
And don't even get me started on the ones who attack the starter zones like the Valley of Trials...

Actually I despise people who go attack low level areas and kill flight masters, quest givers etc. Yes, yes, I get the faction thing. But you don't gain anything for it... no honor, no faction benefits, nothing... and you just screw with other people's gaming. And with these wimps it seems they're afraid of actual PvP so they don't even have the excuse that they're out there trying to instigate some world PvP.

Keep killing them. And use the ignore list :P

By the way, I see nothing wrong with having toons in the opposite faction to spy. It's kind of ingenious esp if you view the toons as your agents. Using them to spy to make sure you face no risk in something as trivial as raiding Crossroads is just cowardly though

Damn, they are a bunch of idiots, abusing you for using their own tactics to beat them

I'd say you are doing a good job...

Dependent upon what they're saying to you, you could even report them for abusive language/harassment. See Section 4, Paragraph B, Subsections 1 + 4. There's also Paragraph C, subsection 5 (http://www.wow-europe.com/en/legal/termsofuse.html) to consider, in light of their behaviour.

Thanks for the support everyone!

I actually ended up reporting one of them today, for abusive language. As did the person I was partying with, who was subjected to a particularly foul-mouthed tirade after killing her Alliance character. The GM was fairly quick to respond actually, and said they would investigate the claims - standard response in these matters, I assume?

Using a spy is one thing, maybe for planning a raid on a larger town, but poor old Crossroads? Seems to bring out the worst in people! My ignore list is filling up rapidly now...

Are there any other towns that suffer like this? It always seems to be Crossroads in my experience - do our Alliance brethren suffer anything similar?

Sentinel Hill in Westfall seems to be our Crossroads. Maybe not quite so bad, but still annoying as hell when questing there. It tends to just be one or 2 hordies at a time, but they decimate the whole area and prevent any kind of quest hand-in. I play on a Normal server, so it's fairly rare that anyone comes to take them down.

Yeah they dont tend to attack en masse but you get the lone hordes attacking westfall for its high griefing potential (killable escort and vendors/quest givers with no real guards or perimeter).
