When you're a party leader (I'm assuming only the party leader can set it) you can set something to do with loot right? I'm also assuming this means how much of the loot goes to yourself & how much goes to the rest of the team.

I don't understand it at all though. If somebody could please explain it to me, I'd be extremely grateful, thanks.

By default loot in groups is set to Group Loot and the item level is set to Uncommon (green level items). Each dead mob is the proporty of someone in the group, i.e. they have the right to loot it and others dont.

Group Loot means that money is split equally, items lower than green are the property of whoever has the loot from that mob and green items or better are rolled on. You can leave the loot style on group, but move the item level to, say, blue. That means greens go to the person whose loot it is, blues and epics are rolled on. There are other loot rulesets... the manual explains them I think, as does wowwiki.com

I don't think any of the loot settings affect how the money on the mob is diseminated.

Group loot also tries to be intelligent about most quest items, so that if there's a quest item on a mob who's loot belongs to someone else, it will allow anyone in the party with the quest to pick up the quest item.

Group Loot: everybody takes turns in looting a mob. The money found on these loots is spread equally over each party member. By default the items of green and higher quality will require a need/greed roll from all party members, this treshold can be changed. When a person opens the loot window for a mob but then abandons it without having looted all items, they renounce their right to that loot and it becomes free for all. Should a mob contain quest items that the looter can't pick up, but another party member can, then this other party member can also loot the mob - however, they will only see the particular quest item and the money, and will not be able to loot any other items on that mob.
**that also explains how come another party member is sometimes able to loot your mob - the loot system isn't bugged, but your loot just happened to have nothing but quest items and money.

Free for All: everybody can loot any mob. The money found on these loots will be spread equally over each party member. There is no rolling for items of green or higher quality, and it's all on a 'first come, first served' basis.
**this has mostly been used for boosts, where the booster doesn't get any loot and the boostee can get all the items - however, since they implemented the option for a person to 'pass on loot', this Free for All is used less (especially when 2 people are boosted, as they can take turns through Groop Loot and the booster still doesn't get anything but their share of the money).

Master Looter: everybody takes turns in looting a mob. The money found on these loots is spread equally over the party members. Based on the treshold the items of higher quality will be unavailable for looting, and only one person (who has been designated beforehand) is able to take these - not to keep them, but to distribute them to party member who are entitled to them. All members can still see these items in a loot window, and will be aware of what kind of items drop.
**this looting system may sound strange, but it's most often used in a raid where rolling or point systems determine who gets the loot from a raid boss, and the Master Looter is the one to make sure that only that person gets it and nobody can steal the loot or roll need when they don't deserve it.

There are other forms of looting, but in my time of playing I've never encountered these so I'm not going to bother explaining them - chances are high you'll never use them yourself as well.

That's brilliant, thanks a bunch! One last question though, what is "rolling"?

Thanks again.

When you play with the Group Loot settings on you will get a pop up message for any item that is green or higher. In that window you will choose either need or greed. Need always takes priority but it should only be used after discussing it with the group. It the entire group chooses greed you will all "roll" for the item. The system generates a random number from 1 to 100 and the highest roll takes the item.

In raids (and most dungeons) it is very common for everyone to pass on boss loot (no need or greed roll). Then the players that can use the item are asked to roll. You do this by typing /roll or /roll 1-100. You will then generate a random number from 1 to 100 that everyone can see. The highest number takes the item.

Do please look in the manual. Things like rolling are explained there. If there's something about that that's not clear, cool, ask. But please do avail yourself of the manual for the basics.

By the way, wowwiki.com is an AWESOME resource for pure information. For opinions (what professions should I get, what spec should I use) this forum is tops.
