View Full Version : Where Do I Learn These Professions?

I just recently purchased this game & am an Orc Warrior in a place called Sen'Jin Village. I already have the "fishing" profession, but was wondering where I'd need to go to learn the following 3 professions:
- Cooking
- Mining
- Blacksmithing
I also have a couple of questions:
- Is Blacksmithing a decent Primary profession to go alongside mining?
- Does cooking compliment fishing? I only ask because I caught some fish, and it says I can eat/use them without cooking them first. Does cooking increase the effect the fish has on me when I eat it or something like that?
Thanks!
If you've never been to the site, WOWWiki is an excellent resource for questions like these. Most cities and towns have trainers where you can learn different professions. Smaller camps will only have one or two trainers but North of where you are is a major city Orgrimmar.

Mining and blacksmithing go together exceptionally well, as the mining will save you having to purchase materials on the auction houses.
To learn both of these professions, you will need to head up to the the small outpost of Razor Hill, which is pretty much straight north up the road from where you are now. I think both trainers are in there, if not - the capital city, Orgrimmar, has trainers for both the skills you are looking for!
One thing a few people may advise though, is that blacksmithing is not cheap to level up in the slightest. The rewards later on will be excellent for your warrior, but it may feel like a real moneysink levelling it...some people may suggest taking two gathering professions to begin with (mining and skinning, for example) as this will mean that you have a nice healthy bankroll, and can then drop the other gathering profession later on and exchange it for smithing, either gathering the required materials yourself or purchasing them with your lovely big piles of gold.
Entirely up to you, obviously! I started my first character with smithing and mining, and he didn't make much money at all...I put his smithing on hold, sold all my ores at the auction house and have made him a fair amount of money doing so....(which I then went on to fund my alt-oholism with, but that's another story...)
Cooking and fishing will compliment each other very well together, insomuch as you can spend a lazy hour or so catching fish, then cook them yourself - accruing skill points in both as you do so. Eating raw fish will give you some health back, but cooked ones will generally replenish more. Some of the later fish that you will be able to prepare will give you buffs such as extra stamina for 15 minutes...some of the very high end cooked fish / meats are excellent for buffs, not to mention the amount stacks of them will sell for on the auction houses!

Yes, fishing and cooking go hand in hand. 1-50 cooking is a bit hard with fishing, only because the lowest level fish are never the most common catch anywhere you fish, but beyond that, as long as you fish in the right places, the fish you catch will push your cooking along as fast as your fishing skill increases.
Mining is definitely the best match for Blacksmithing, unless you have another toon who's a Miner and can send bars to the Blacksmith. Trying to buy the bars from other players will be too expensive, even if you're selling the resulting items.
You may also want to look into First Aid, if you haven't already.

I have another question regarding fishing.
EVERY time I catch a fish, I grow a fishing level. I'm up to level 70 fishing within around 45 minutes. Is this normal or is it a bug?
Thanks.

Fishing does tend to go up extremely rapidly for a start, in my experience. Don't worry, you'll be wishing for the days when you got a point every time soon enough!
Also, I may be wrong on this, and if anyone else reads this I'm sure they can correct me - but you can level up your fishing ANYWHERE you are able to fish. It isn't like skinning or mining where you will progress beyond, say, skinning bunny rabbits or mining copper - you could technically level all the way to 375 (after visiting appropriate trainers, completing necessary quests etc) in the pool in Orgrimmar. You will hit pools where you don't have a high enough level to fish, however...but if you only need a few more points, you can buy shiny baubles from fishing tradesmen, and there are also higher level lures that give up to around +100, I believe.
I hope I'm right with the Orgrimmar pool thing, would hate you to be sitting there all day Sunday with your fishing hat on and cursing me if I'm wrong...^_^

You get level up from fishing as a percentage of fish caught. So yes, I leveled my fishing 350ish in wailing caverns. The only problem with this is that the fish you get from lower pools are of course not as desirable as those from higher level areas.

Thanks for clearing that up Semiiramiis, should have mentioned that! Just didn't want to potentially stick my foot TOO far down my throat...
Once you can fish for Deviate fish in the oases in the barrens, get ready for the cash to roll in...

^^ LOL.
Thanks for all the help. I just thought it was a bug or something, because it's the quickest I've ever gone up in a skill in any MMORPG & I thought the max fishing level was 100.

Just a general tip for finding useful NPC's is to ask a guard. I don't think Sen'jin has any but in the next village you go to, Razor Hill there will be guards you can talk to and get directions. They will even put a dot on your map to show where they are. If I recall correctly there is a blacksmithing and mining trainer in Razor Hill itself but if not the nearest will be the main city of Orgrimmar.

My professions on my main are as follows:
Alchemy. Maxed at 375.
Herbalism. Maxed at 390. (375 game max + racial boost of 15)
First aid. Maxed at 375. Cooking. Maxed at 375. And yes.... Fishing. Maxed at 375.
Don't worry. Getting to the top of fishing will definitely seem like an accomplishment after awhile.

don't forget to train again. it is very easy to reach the maximum level without noticing and then wonder why you are not levelling any further.
