View Full Version : Is WoW "Dying"?

I purchased WoW a couple days ago, and quite frankly I don't know why I didn't get it sooner. 4 years have passed since it was released and the gameplay/graphics are still really good for an MMORPG. Basically, I love the game.
The thing that's bothering me though, is I've seen a few threads & articles on the net of people syaing that WoW is "dying" and people are leaving etc. All you have to do to see these threads is to search "WoW Dying" into Google.
I just hope I didn't join WoW too late. What do you all think?

Most of the threads that I've read are from Warhammer/Age of Conan fanbois saying this to the ammount to "LuLz!!!1!! wAr PwNzOrZ wOw!!1!!1!1111 ItZ gOnNa TaKeZ tEh SuBsCrIbZoRz111!!1!! ROFLCOPTER!1!!!!1!cos(0)!!!" There are a few from some genuinely disheartened players, but I'd take what you read with a grain of salt. WoW just hit the 10,000,000 subscriber mark.
P.S. Typing in alternating caps takes a lot more time than you'd think it would:tongue:

In a way, you might've joined WoW 'too late'. They've made the 1-60 content far easier and faster and to some that might be a bit of a disappointment. After taking several characters through it might be a bit of a relief, but for someone on their first trip it might make things a bit too fast. That's a matter of taste though.
However, while several games tried to steal WoW's population, there has been precious little success yet so far. AoC failed impressively and while WAR might lure quite a few people away (particularly those who enjoyed their old painted table top figures or the PvP-ers) their main intent never has been stated as to 'destroy WoW'. I do have to commend that attitude as it doesn't appear to be remotely realistic.
Now, on to WoW. Currently, it is larger than the entire MMO genre used to be in terms of subscriptions. Even if they would lose half their player base, it'd still be well over 5-6 million subscribers. I can easily see the number of subscriptions faltering a bit (after all, it's been around for years and people can get tired of the game), but even then the number of participants remains massive.

the game was fun with 5 million subscribers as it is with 10 million subscribers. if you look at it that way, wow dying threads make little sense.
in fact, who cares if a million other people decide to stop playing. im still playing on a server with a decent economy and a decent group of players. some people leave, some people join. thanks for joining. have fun while you're here. and leave when the game becomes not fun for you.

Personally I tried WAR the day it came out, and I thought it was awful, but that's just me. On the other hand (like I mentioned above) I went out & purchased WoW a couple days ago and was hooked instantly.
Anyway, thanks for the replies, it's put my mind at rest somewhat ^^

I just realized wasn't WAR supposed to come out on the 18th? What's the story.... how's it going with the game?

I haven't played it myself, but I've got friends that did. The most enthusiastic said he'd be back playing WoW within 3 months.
It's a good game, just not as polished as WoW, but WoW's got a few years head start. It's heavily PvP based, and even some of the endgame PvE content is closely tied to PvP. The classes don't have as much differentiation as WoW classes do, though this is probably to make PvP balancing more easy. There are certainly those that will find this PvP focus appealing.

Also worth mentioning, when the expansion comes out in a couple of months, many of the poeple who left WoW will come flocking back.

Y-e-e-s, I suspect that on the expansion day release my poor old PC is going to go into shock when I try and set foot in Northrend...
Maybe I'll just kick back in Outland for a while, start farming Netherweave and Netherweb spider silk for all the people who rush over there and can't be bothered to farm things any more...*rubs hands together*
My EU server is, as far as I'm concerned, perfectly populated. Always people around, but never to the point where you can't quest or kill to your hearts content. And Shattrath is still as annoyingly laggy as ever, I take that as a relatively good sign of health!
Also worth mentioning, when the expansion comes out in a couple of months, many of the poeple who left WoW will come flocking back.
Myself included. And I've got a brand new dual 2.8 GHz, 4GB Ram, 512MB GeForce 8800 GT and a 30" LCD that are chomping at the bit for some WoW time.
If 5 million players quit tomorrow, they'd shut down half the servers, and the remaining servers would be just as active and populated as they are today. It would take an act of god, or WoW2, to make WoW die.

I don't think it's dying at all. After two years I still find it interesting and diverting. There's always enjoyment in good games. I often haul out old CRPGs and play them. They haven't lost their charm. I don't think WoW will either.

Here's my two cents on it:
Right now a lot of people are probably taking a hiatus from WoW. Warhammer Online just came out and they're all trying that and/or they don't want to burn themselves out with WoW before the expansion comes, so they're just taking a break from WoW. As such, lower server load then usual, fewer people online and other such things will result and it may seem that WoW is "dying".

In about two to three weeks, you will see exactly how "dead" wow is, when the 3.0 patch comes out and completely restructures much of the classes.

I too am very much looking forward to 3.0. It'll be like a mini-expansion for the ppl who won't be getting WotLK right away or for those that need a bit of stuff to stay interested.

many people on the european realms are displeased with blizzard's recent habit of letting a lot of important current bugs and issues fall to the wayside while focusing on future development, as well as their inconsistency with policies where they will say one thing and do something completely contrary a few days later among other things. when threads are posted on the official forums about how people are losing confidence in them for such things, they are deleted quickly. consider their scroll of resurrection promotion (new within the last year) which was probably implemented because perhaps they have experienced a substantial loss of profit due to all of the cancelled accounts. i very much doubt that it is because there are better games out there. the game content in world of warcraft is superb. it is the corporate shark that is the killer.
