View Full Version : Question About Axes + Orcs!

I have some questions regarding axes, when used with Orcs:
- In general, what is the better option: 2 Handed axes or 1 Handed + shield? Or is it just a matter of preference & doesn't really make a difference?
- Are you able to duel wield 1 handed axes? If so, would this be a better choice than using a 2 handed axe?
- There is a weapons merchant in the town I'm currently in and he sells "tomahawks" which are 1 handed axes. Could I purchase 2 of these & equip one in each hand?
Sorry if it seems cliche, but I couldn't find any other threads regarding this so just thought I'd ask.
Thanks.
It has more to do with the class you're playing not the race. If you're a rogue, Shaman, warrior or hunter you can dual wield weapons. They all get the talent at different levels as far as I know. Two hander or dual wield is a pretty hot topic, you can find lots of discussions that explain why one may be better than the other.

basically:
One-hand items can be equipped on the main or off hand.
Main-hand items can only be equipped on the main hand.
Off-hand items can only be equipped on the off hand.
if the tomahawk axe you're looking at says "one-hand" then yes, you can dual wield them.
i am under the impression that you're a warrior from your other threads. what you must remember about 1 hand vs. 2 hand weapons is that, if levels are equal, the 2 handed weapon will generally hit harder per swing, AND will hit harder if you do special "instant" attacks. these instant attacks have little to do with the speed of the weapon. however, the damage dealth has a lot to do with the speed of the weapon you have.
now if you're going for damage, i would suggest getting a two-hander. there are a lot of other factors that go into dual wielding. your offhand misses more often, and i think does less damage.
also, in regards to your question about shields. use it when you tank an instance or a difficult world boss where you also have some form of health recovery. do not use it when you level, as you are actually afforded the time between battles to bandage and heal up. there are, however, some abilities that can not be done without a shield, and sometimes adding a shield spike will damage the mobs on a successful block. but those are all useful in instances. my advice would be to save you shield for instances or parties.
confused yet? haha welcome to WoW and enjoy the tanking threads!

I learn fast ^^
OK so basically when training I shouldn't use a shield, and should only use a shield when fighting an end boss or something like that.
That just leaves me thinking whether to use dual wield axes or a big 2 handed axe. I remember reading somebody say that you should always dual wield, because when the time comes for you to wield a shield, you're already pretty decent at using one handed axes. Does this sound about right?
I take it using a 2 handed axe for levelling is not optimal? If not, when would a person use a 2 handed axe for anything? Maybe for PvP? I can't see any use for it in PvE unless you're level 70 and don't need to level up anymore.
Thanks. Oh and yes, I'm a warrior!

you can do that. dual wield i mean. go with a Fury build.
search the forums for a thread on "RIP" or "Rogue-in-plate".
axes, swords, heck.. even daggers. just make sure the stats on those babies are good and you're fine. always keep your weapon skill level up to date, as you'll need it to actually hit something. if your weapon skill level is too low, you'll continually miss until you level up that skill. if i get a new weapon i've never used before, i'll usually run out there and use it on a lower level mob for 15 minutes. this will get my skill level up fine.

Hey, you said if the Tomahawk says "One-Hand" on it, I can dual wield it, but I just purchased 2 tomahawks & when i try to equip one of them in my offhand spot he says "i don't have that ability yet" :S
Is there a certain level I have to be in order to dual wield?

Rogues learn DW at level 10; Warriors and Hunters learn at level 20 and Shamans get it at level 40 (via talents).

Dont buy weapons from Vendors. If you are in need of new weapons, go buy in Auction House or do an instance and hope that a weapon drops. Dont use weapons that are white, use green, blue etc

In general: buy as little gear as possible from vendors. They're evil price-gouging bastards. They made me give up on my first Orc Warrior .

Weapon masters in any large city will be able to teach you. and if they cannot teach you, they can tell you what other weapon masters can teach you. im sorry i assumed you knew about dual wielding skill. you must learn it from a trainer.
