View Full Version : Preparation for WotLK

I was wondering if people had any ideas on what we could do to prepare ourselves for the new expansion, such as how much gold we might feel is useful, any items like herbs or ores, things to do/collect while we are waiting.
I assume herbs ... since people are gonna jump for Inscription and the prices are going to get on roof top.
Otherwise ... you need some gold to unlock flying in Notherand at level 77 which is around 950g.
Other then that ... all depends upon you :)

I'm kind of stressed out about it. My main gold making market has totally plummeted to zilch in the last couple weeks ~shock~
So... I'm preparing by 1. hording herbs and 2. not spending anything.

Yes, I have lots of herbs and cloth (Netherweave) and I am saving my gold. Anything else?

Which market is that? People not buying or something?

This is news to me, what I've heard up to this point is that it's going to be a quest to unlock cold weather flying. Do you have a source for your info?
Well, AH is dead...but with so many ppl reading forums on LK and all, I doubt you can corner the herb Market :(

The AH is dead? But I've been selling heaps of stuff...

AH has died on my server, but only during the last week, I was happily selling old stockpiles of stuff and levelling my alchemy with primal mights and flasks then suddenly almost overnight prices on everything except epics totally crashed. Everyones suddenly decided to dump their stock while its still worth something I guess.
Our prices are more expensive then ever. Epics and blues are ridiculously priced as are a lot of greens. Some gem prices have fallen a little and I haven't really been keeping up with the price of ore so I'm not sure if that's fallen or not.

If you have any honor, grind enough to get one of the new pieces.
Do dailies to get a couple hundred gold, about 1000 if you can stand that much, but a couple hundred will have you ready for your mount by 80, just from questing and selling stuff on the AH as you level.
Have fun doing whatever you like to do most.
Me, I cannot wait for the 3.0 changes to Ret Paladins for PvP. After having to give 110% to even try to survive vs. Rogues and Arms warriors (I do good, usually top 10% in AV of both sides). It'll be refreshing to actually be able to face down an equally geared rogue and have a chance to win.

Do we know what the gold earning rates for quests and general leveling are like in the expansion? When BC came out all the gold people saved up devalued a lot.
jschild

It scales similarly to BC, though the initial jump is nowhere the same (same with Stamina, keeps on scaling high, but the initial jump isn't huge).

The new Mammoth caravan mount, the one that carries 2 passengers as well as you and vendors so you can sell your rubbish simply by summoning your mount, is 20k Gold :)

Ah, thank you! My friend wanted me to help him save 20k for something, but I couldn't remember what, I thought it was a new mount, but then I saw

I'm thinking that the value of gold will decrease come WotLK so I'm wondering if it's worth selling anything now, or waiting. What about items for disenchanting? Worth keeping or selling now?
Anyone have any idea on the new dailies, how much they will net you? Or any other sources of gold? New sources?

Why would the value of gold decrease?
I assume there are dailies, but not while leveling. I wouldn't bother stockpiling Netherweave or any TBC mat. As to how much gold you'll need, it depends what you do. If you level up first, then level professions, the only gold you'll need will be the 950 to unlock flying, the various stuff you need anyway, i.e repair gold, reagents, etc. There's no real gold sink of required things pre-80, just as there isn't pre-70 in TBC. Of course if you want to enchant stuff as you level or buy BoEs or power level a profession... that's different. Same if you want to buy the new mounts right away. But if you just want to level up to 80 you'll actually be fine with a couple of hundred gold to start out.
Me, I've got about 2000 gold just for the heck of it - it will cover Cold Weather Flying etc. Most people seem to make another 1-2000g as the level from DEing stuff etc.

LOL Wintrow I feel your pain. I have 4 70's that I jump around on. Lately Ive been trying everything to make some cash. I dont have time to always do dailies on all the toons so I have to make a rotation. So far on my "main" I have 5110g, but I heard that the actual epic flyer mount cost 250g, so I guess I need one more round of dailies. On my other toons Im very slowly climbing around 800. Im trying to figure out what i can craft with all the netherweave and adamantite that I get just doing dailies. Also, I have run scholo and strat solo a few times, got some lucky drops (brightwood staff sold for 750g for example) and just from de'ing the greens and blues and all the cash drops, you make quite a bit of money. I would recommend running after you have done your dailies though, as it takes some time to clear.

For that matter, if you don't hit 70 before the expansion lands, there's not much reason to get any flyer until 77. Personally, I'm going to continue grinding, just so that I don't have to grind as much after the fact. 7 epic fliers down, two to go (and that's counting a nameless deathknight that I haven't rolled yet). However, I have to admit that there's no logical reason for me to do this, it's pure obsessive compulsiveness.

Yeah, I've never been bitten by the epic flyer bug. At half the price I would have, but I play the game mostly to play with friends vs farm gold, gather herbs etc, so, though I've earned tons of gold I've spent it levelling crafting professions, making BoP gear for myself, etc. And now? At this point I've got a touch under 3k gold. I may well enter Wrath with 5k or more. Sigh...

ok to actually answer this question, i think i'll do this:
preorder WotLK.
Request my two weeks off.
move my fridge to my bedroom.
have about 10 to 15 24 packs of beer, various brands.
raid entire snack isle at my local supermarket, store in closet.
order cable internet just for me (other members of the family can share the dsl line, woohoo!)
order backup computer with wrath patches updated just in case of crash. also, should copy wtf folders over on a daily basis.
order two UPS'es just in case power goes out. the second to backup the first.
move recliner from living room to replace worn out computer chair
order backup keyboard and two mouses, just in case they mess up. (same brand/model so connection/software/install would be non-issue)
order catheder and porto potty.
hire maid/nurse to come in once every 6 hours to empty contents.
buy wrist braces (you never know when the carpel tunnel will kick in) for both hands.
send wifey and kid(s) to in-laws, or paris, whichever is easier.
hope im not missing anything.

Personally been leveling an alliance char on a different server together with the wife, Never seen the alliance outland quests so that might be interesting. On my horde chars I been hoarding money (up to 7k now) and getting daggers (as a rogue) just in case I want to go assassination or Sub daggers (enchanted them as well ofcourse)
Also been stocking up on netherweave for first aid and been dumping my primals and such on the AH seeing they'll probably drop in prize with Wrath. (and I won't use em anyways)

I am toying with the idea of at least booking off the friday (14th) so I can have a day to immerse in northrend. The only obstacle is that the girlfriend works shift-work, so she might be off that day. If she is, its pointless for me to book a holiday because she wouldnt understand me taking a day off to play video games, and she would likely want me to go shopping or some crazy business, or do housecleaning.
In prep, I am saving up gold as I hear the trainers charge alot for recipes. I likely wont be able to get epic riding skill on all 4 of my toons, so I might just focus on my warrior, which is my favorite character anyway, plus she is a miner so it makes sense i suppose. I am only stockpiling ore because right now the price is so low its a shame to auction. Hopefully after release the PL'ing of DK's will require lots of ore, and I can sell the stuff and not feel horrible about it.
Other than that its dailies on a rotation, almost exalted on 2 more toons, but then you need exalted with aldor/scryer to get the full benefit of the neckpiece from SSO quartermaster. Sigh, its so daunting. Another source of pain is that the Fel Armaments have not at all dropped in price and likely wont, whereas the Arcane Tomes sell for about 5g. Damn aldor sux.

Why would the value of gold decrease?
Well, when TBC came out, they added dailies and shortly after everything at the AH went up in price, since everyone suddenly had more money.
I'm assuming the amount of money available total will increase (new dailies or something).
Maybe not...
Yeah, I am starting to see a cooldown on the AH. Things are getting harder to sell, things are getting cheaper. Maybe it's time to switch from selling to buying...

The dailies from TBC didn't come out for a decent bit, and there were far fewer of them compared to now. No point in spending 1k gold for something that prob won't last you to 80.

Don't do this. You get frostweave banadages right off (unless this has changed recently) and Frostweave drops. YOU might be able to get some points off NW at 375, but it's not needed to fill a gap.

The dailies inflation only really hit when you had 25 and they did the Isle ones with the incentive of unlocking the badge vendor etc. And they weren't in TBC, but a patch. The reason Outland greens were worth so much was that they were rare (initially) and way better than even strat/scholo blues so for non-raiders they were a big step up.
I agree that the AH has cooled. A lot. It's the effect of a hard release date vs "we all know it will be out later this year." People are selling stuff in their banks and there's less demand for that stuff as people who'd normally buy are saying "why... I'll see what Wrath brings."

Not buying a epic flyer till WotLK also has another benefit.
The Cold Weather Flying trainer in Dalaran is Kirin Tor rep and thus you get the rep discount. Of course this may end up changing.

So the cold weather flying only enables flight in northrend correct? You still need to train the riding skill up for 5000g if you ever want an epic flyer.
Its such a shame, since you cant fly in northrend until 77, and I dont imagine I will be in outland very much come wrath, so why do I need an epic flyer? I keep asking myself this and I have no answer.
It just doesnt seem logical. All I do now is basically dailies on IQD. Once im done there I port to shatt using the scroll you get for the scrying quest then do the daily BG, use the port to any major city to hit the AH then log off with that toon, rinse and repeat. I dont know if I am going to bother with epic flying now that I really analyze it.
Only 3 more toons to get exalted with SSO... dont know why I am striving for this it just gives me some sort of goal so I dont feel lost.

At all? Or until you're 77? Northrend is BIG, so I can see the advantages of having an epic flier in terms of speed - epic speed, direct routes. And, of course, they'll be nice for gathering, just as they are currently. I don't see any reason at all to get an epic flier now though. Six weeks until Wrath (presuming, of course, they hit the date). I'm going to Northrend right away, and I don't have tons of gold burning in my pocket, so...
For myself, since I don't gather herbs or mine, they have little practical advnatage aside from the speed. I usually get summoned to instances or just make my way there as others are grabbing pots, repairing etc. At, say, 2000g, it would be a no brainer. At 5000... I look at that as a lot of hours of my time that I'm spending farming gold... to save a couple of minutes here and there after I've got the flier. Never been compelling to me.
