I know this since my higher level guildies are talking about this, but I wanna say you lose your flying mount in northrend until you are level 78? its something like that. but they want you to progress through zones normally instead of flying over it all....

I thought you have to unlock flying in Northrend?

You unlock your flying abilities again at 77 - cold weather flying or something is needed to fly in Northrend. Different sources say its a quest or a load of gold, so not sure about that part.
Your riding crop however, will be gone permanently.....Blizzard are getting rid of em. I've no idea why.

They are redoing the way mounts and speed increase objects are handled.

I wonder if that's going to be a good thing for the average player, or just another excuse by Blizzard for a time / gold sink?

ok heaps of rumors flying around here.
1) you do NOT loose your mounts.
2) you can still fly in Outland after level 70
3) to be able to fly in Northrend you need to be Level 77 and you need the Cold Weather Flying ability which atm is bought for 950g in the beta, there used to be a quest whether or not it comes back is up to blizz.
4) they are only redoing the mount speed increasing items (ie Carrot on a stick, Riding crop etc) players above level 70 can no longer use them Blizz are gonna give those players another way to increase mount speed but that has not been revealed yet, talents/abilites that increase mount speed (Crusader Aura, Animal Handler etc) do still work after level 70 though.

will these things affect the 30, 60 mounts? or just the epic ones?

Bold is the important part for you
Blizzard has stated that they find it awkward that the riding crops goes into a trinket slot and it is cumbersome if you are forcefully unmounted or forget to re-equip your default trinkets (yeah, we had players do a 3 hour raid with a riding crop). So they will change it. Maybe if you own a riding crop it becomes a permanent +10% speed enchant on all your mounts or so....

What I've read/heard about Riding Crops and the Carrot on a Stick is this: They become one-time use items that will permanently enhance the speed of whatever mount you choose. So if you want 10% faster speed on your Land and Flying mount, you'd need two Riding Crops.

Perhaps this has been discussed but why can't they make it a passive effect. As long as it is either in your bank or in your bags, you will get the 10% speed increase to all mounts. Why can't they do something like that?

I feel like I just saved a ton of money because I can't fly in Northrend until 77.. not buying the flying mount for my hunter who's going to Northrend first. Should haven enough easily by 77.

No, this was their original idea, but it has been completely scrapped. No speed increasing items will work after level 70, and Blizzard has not yet implemented their replacements. They have suggested that it would be some sort of passive effect though.

This is basically what they are going for. They want to move away from wasting a trinket slot, and they also really weren't happy with the whole riding crop becomes a one-time use enchant thing either.

Any refund on those riding crops? I'm not holding my breath on that one.

As a leatherworker they better have some king of replacement or refund for them. Those mats were expensive and I have them on like 4 different characters.

(If this has been covered somehwere else I must have missed it.) Will cold weather flying up your riding skill, or will it just be a passive ability? I ask this because if it's a riding skill increase you'll need to have the epic flying skill in order to unlock cold weather flying.

It's supposed to be an independent skill so you do not need epic flying for cold weather flying.
