My lvl 15 Warrior was in over its head fighting multiple lvl 17 Harpies & Wind witches in the Barrens. While I tried to draw them out individually, several times 2 or more of them fell on me and it was a short fight. Are there any skils, tactics that might help me with this type of scenario? I realize This quest was probably to advanced but this is just an example. thanks

harpies are tough for any class if they are above your level. they have erratic patrol patterns and flee (often bringing back friends) when they have been taken down to low health. i suggest waiting until you are at least up to their level before you attempt that area. do some of the easier quests first. if you must engage them, be sure to use rend early on and save hamstring for when they have about 35% of their hit points left to slow their fleeing. be careful with thunder clap as you do not want to aggro some of the neutral mobs which may be wandering around near you. also, try to pull them one at a time, as far away from their friends as possible, always backing into the area you have just cleared previously. with the casters, that will require you to use a ranged/throwing weapon and then running back out of their casting range. demoralizing shout has no effect on the casters, so be sure you save that for the melee attackers. some minor strength and fortitude/defense elixirs should help as well. also some sharpening or weightstones will add temporary damage to your weapons and armor kits/enchantments can add some bonuses to your armor. they really do make a difference in survivability, so they are well worth investing in.

also you can use shield bash to shut down their casting, if they are forced to melee then you can run back a few more paces if you see a patrol coming.

execute may help when they are trying to run tho it is tricky to time.

demo shout does affect caster mobs in the game so its well worth using demo shout on every single fight when you have more than 1 mob to fight or they are higher than your lvl.
the problems you have are the same faced by every low lvl warrior in the game. we need the best gear for our lvl then use sharpening stones to give a small dps boost as well as any pots or scrolls you can get to give you any extra edge in the fight

The best way is just to pull them from the edges and fight them away from their comrades. If you have to kill a specific type that are in the middle of a group then the safest way to do so is to kill everything between the edge and where you need to go. This way you are always fighting in a space and as long as you keep your eye on the patrols will only fight one at a time. Also if you do get into trouble having a clear path behind you means you can run away safely and live to try again.

thanks for the advise. They were just out of my league at the time I guess.

As for fighting multiple mobs and trying to survive the odds here are some pointers:

- keep Thunder Clap up at all times, it reduces incoming damage by 10% by slowing their attacks down. Use Demo shout when you have spare rage.
- At L20 you get Cleave, this works like Heroic Strike (costs 5 more rage though) but hits a second target as well. Devastating if you're using a two hander. But don't waste all your rage on it.
- If there's a caster, kill that one first. Their spells go right through your armor.
- Always keep 'em in front of you. You can't parry attacks from behind.
- Against casters try and make a macro that will equip your shield, Shield Bash and re-equip your weapon(s). This way you don't have to use Pummel.
- Hamstring those runners before they run. Somewhere half health or below is fine.
- High incoming damage means you'll have more rage. If your weapon is slow enough you can fit in a high dmg hit like Slam (L30 ability though).

And lastly: bring pots !!

Learning to pull mobs, deal with casters and know your mob tactics will take some time. Once you've leveled one character it will become much easier. For now still to green level quests and mobs until you become more comfortable with your warrior.

interesting. i wasn't aware of that. then the "reduced melee attack power of all enemies.." description is deceiving.

Heheh, well I'm sure it will reduce the melee attack power of casters. So in that way it DOES affect them. Pity they're so fond of casting spells which (as far as I know) have no relation to their melee attack power.

i have noticed that they do resort to melee once their mana pool has run low... in most cases. i have seen many cast with no mana (completely drained by my warlock's drain mana spell) at all so i suppose you never know.

Reminds me of the words of the great General Tacticus himself, and I quote -
"In fact, men, the general has this to say about ensuring against defeat when out-numbered, out-weaponed and out-positioned. It is..." he turned the page, "'Don't Have a Battle'." (Jingo by Terry Pratchett, wherein Commander Vimes looks for inspirational words for his men as they prepare for battle)

I realise that isn't the greatest of help, but picking your fights carefully is the way to go! Single something out, engage it, and draw it back to an area you know is safe and fight it there. Watch the enemies and try and predict where they patrol, areas they are in close proximity to each other to avoid at all costs...pick yourself a safe spot to fight in, and draw all enemies to your improvised killing ground. And, as better people before me have said - use anything that restricts their movements so that when they flee from you in terror, they aren't getting far...
