Excuse me its been a few years since I've played, and I am stuck:
I am playing WOW 3 on a mac. Unfortunately I an unable to GROUP units. Pressing Command 1 or Command 2 to create a new group just doesn't work any more, nothing happens. (Command is the mac equivalent of the control key). I have also tried the mac control, alt and shift keys, these don't work either.
There also seems to be no way to create groups in the standard interface, no obvious icon - its getting extremely frustrating because without this option I have no way of organising or controlling my units. Am I missing something obvious? Is this only a facility you get later in the game? I am working through the standard levels

Thanks for taking the time to help, will go there.
Its a very old forum though - seems like I'm going to be waiting a long time for a response. Is there anywhere else I can go, a current forum? does no-one play this version of Warcraft anymore?

While there may be a Warcraft3 player using these forums willing to help posting that question here is as likely to cause a long wait as posting it there.
Command isn't the equivalent of control. Macs have a control key too. You need to press Control-# to group units, not Command-#.

No that doesn't work either, neither does the Alt/Option key or the shift key - there is really no key combination I can find to create groups. Usually the mac Command (the apple key) in most applications replaces the PC control key - maybe Im not at the level in the game yet where it allows me to do this?
Is there any other way to create groups? at the moment I have large and uncontrollable armies!

That's definitely the hotkey. Go into the settings menu (F10) and look for game controls or whatever they called it. I think you can change hotkeys there. Maybe it got turned off somehow? Check that your control key is working at all, too. Control click on this page and make sure that the context menu pops up.

Thanks for your help - yes my control key is working fine, just tested contextual menu - a new keyboard
Under F10 there is a menu called "Options" - and this gives Gameplay, video and sound - but there doesn't seem to be any way under the gameplay menu to reconfigure keyboard commands - under Help it says you should be able to press CTRL + number to group items. The other hot keys seem to work, F keys select hero's etc.
How are you trying to recall the groups? You're just pressing the corresponding number key, right?

Yes, and I've tried the numbers on both the numeric keypad and the standard number keys

Yes, and I've tried the numbers on both the numeric keypad and the standard number keys - doesn't work. I have tried pretty well every keyboard combination to create and recall groups, even the Fkeys - no joy.
It almost as if the game doesn't contain this functionality. Its only because I know first of all that it wouldn't be possible to play properly without this, and also because it says in the help files that its possible. Usually in these games, there is ANOTHER way to create groups also, something in the interface, but there are no "group" buttons either.

I have a mac and play wc3. Ctrl+num to group and num to select works for me. Something's wrong with your setup.
