Hi all i'm interested in starting a new character. Do you have any recommendations before WOTLK launches. Would it make more sense for me to start after it launches. Are there any incentives such as the achievement system, that would benefit new characters?
I'm trying to figure out a good realm to roll on as well. I'm on the west coast so i'm looking for a PST realm. Any suggestions?

Go ahead and get started, since you will be starting fresh anyway.

Do you want a PVE or PVP server?

Well I plan to play pretty casually, but I still want it to be fun. I'm used to FPS's like BF2142, CSS, Quake 3, UT etc, so I wouldnt mind PVP. But if everyone is much higher than me it might be a mess.
When I have played MMO's in the past, i've tried to find the most populated servers, and generally ive found those that are the most fun.
Any suggestions on highly populated PST realms?

pvp? pve?
rp? hell no rp?
us, oceanic or eu?
He's looking for US in the PST time zone.
Google WOWCensus and check out the warcraftrealms site. It shows you the population, time zone and makeup of each realm.

With TBC there were two new races, and two new starting areas. It doesnt look like WOTLK will have anything for brand new players.
Am I wrong?
If thats the case, I might just start a new character with either the Blood Elf or Draenei.
I'm looking for a PST PVE realm that has a great population.

Did you check the wow census site?
In order to have a Death Knight in Wrath you have to have a level 55 character already. There will be new talents and some changes that may affect you in the old world but the new content would not be available to you until you get close to level 70 or start a Death Knight.

I did check Warcraftrealms.com. What I noticed was most of the realms say that there is not enough data to accuratly show real numbers.
So, does anyone know a great PVE, PST, realm that has a bunch of great players?

quite honestly, most realm time dont matter. i'm on two realms and i meet people from all over the united states.
also, dont worry about too many high levels doing anything to you. its pretty quiet lately, with a bunch of alts leveling up. you'll mostly see people in outlands as the lower level leveling areas are quite barren. you'll also have some trouble looking for groups for instances as well. but dont worry, there will be plenty in outlands and soon to be WotLK. you'll get lots more changes to party up then, and by then, you're in your 60s anyway, so not too much need to feel overwhelmed by 70s.
one last thing to note, WoW has server farms known as Datacenters. its worth a try, but pick a realm whose datacenter is closer to you. Look up wowwiki.com and search for data center. you'll get a list of realms based on datacenters. even realms located on the west coast may bave Eastern Time, or vice versa. so really, time doesnt matter that much. also related to data centers, you might find yourself with less latency on one data center vs. another. i live in northern california and my latency to the Dallas datacenter is about 50-100 ms faster than my latency to the Seattle datacenter. go figure.

I don't have a PST rec but you weren't looking at the right section of the site. You want this page:
http://www.warcraftrealms.com/realmstats.php?sort=UTCOffset
There's no reason NOT to start - since there aren't new starting areas, the expansion will have little effect on you unless you want to level Inscription (new profession) as you level which I would NOT recommend.

Try undead for horde you will love the whole cannabalism(my favorite). Also start now so you can be one of the million death knights running around. I suggest mining as proffesion. It gives you the most options later. It usually makes good money while leveling. herbalism is more fun in my opinion but you pick one and level up. Do not make leveling proffession to high a priority. there will be plenty of time at 80 to finish levling your skill. Just make sure to keep you gather skill up and it should be a breeze. I roll hored on nodrasil and alliance on moonrunnee if you decide on alliance give me a holler.
