Before logging last night, I went by the Ironforge Auction House and got a message something like this.

"Shrinkage tries to pickpocket you but fails"
"Shrinkage tries to pickpocket you but fails"
"Shrinkage pickpockets you: You lose 2g88s"

I've never heard of pickpocketed or seen a messge like that before. My char is only level 23 so losing almost 3g hurts.

I asked guild and they said getting pickpocketed is not possible that only NPCs can be pickpocketed.

There are no NPCs in the IF AH named "You".

I don't know exactly how much gold I had so I don't know if I actually lost 2g88s but I think I had about 120g prior and 117g after.

When I saw the msg, I moused over everyone in the AH and no one there named Shrinkage. I didn't hear any Rouge sound that you can hear when a rogue is stealthing around you.

What gives? Is this possible?

Are you sure it wasn't a /me command?

i.e. /me tries to pickpocket you but fails

I don't know what a /me command is. My char is a mage lvl 23 if that helps

in other words you have not been pick pocketed next time he does it just do /e chases Shrinkage down and beats him to within a inch of his life.

Yeah, it's fun to do the first time you realize that you can, and sometimes results in people /w you demanding their money back. :D

Players cannot be pickpocketed, so don't worry. You didn't lose any money.

It's just a macro generated /emote.
I play on an RP server, so my rogue has a macro
/em pickpockets %T and receives 5g22s, a button, a dead bug and a fuzzy coated gumdrop.
(It inserts my rogues name at the beginning and the %T command automatically includes the name of the person I have targeted)

It's fun to see what reactions I get from newer players. Some people demand their 5g22s back. Others will ask to have their "favorite" pet (dead bug) returned. I even had one person /cry because they were saving that last gumdrop.

I found that people with a quick enough wit to spontaneously jump into the RP make for interesting guild members.

I like to have fun with the /me emote (or /em, they both do the same thing) as well. My ally main is a Rogue, so the pickpocket thing is a joke I commonly use - with varying results. My friend tried to pull the same stunt on his Hunter (yes, his Hunter), and promptly got kicked out of the party he was in for an instance - they didn't appreciate thieves, and threatened to report him to a GM if he didn't stop whining (and all he did was tell them it's a joke emote). Sheesh. o.O

Anyway, the way it works is that /me or /em puts your own name in front, and will display everything you type after it as a real emote. So typing "/me thinks that you really need a haircut" will show an emote to everyone, saying that I think they really need a haircut.
If you see an emote that someone pickpockets you, then they didn't target you specifically but just wrote 'you' and thus everybody around sees that emote as being 'targeted' to them.

"/e makes some strange gestures"

this only works with people who have tried to collaborate with a member of the opposite faction by trying to get around the "no communicating across faction" rule by using free form emotes.

tater, unless you have changed the default chat colors, system messages will show up in bright yellow. those are the ones you really need to pay attention to. if they are a dark orange color, it is a player or creature generated emote. i hope this helps.

Just target someone and type:

/e picks the pockets of %t and steals (insert random G/S/C amount).

Hilarity will ensue if the person does not recognize the emote in orange letters.

Yeah I've done this. Extremely funny if the 'victim' has no idea it's just an emote.

Most of the time I have to emote giving the money back in order to dry the tears even after explaining that they didn't actually lose anything.

Good to hear it's still alive and well and more importantly, people are still falling for it.

What a gag!

Oh and I did it with a Warrior so you don't even need a Rogue toon to pull this off.

Even funnier, inspect someone and do the emote but in plasce of stealing gold...steal weapon, armor, etc.
