View Full Version : Moving with the mouse

I have been mostly a keyboard turner in the past, but lately I have decided to try moving with the mouse. However, I have one very noobish question to ask: Is it possible to move backwards with the mouse? Because when I'm playing my hunter alt, I need to move backwards sometimes to be able to shoot if the mob attacks me instead of my pet. And turning around would take so much time, so I have to resort to moving backwards with my keyboard, and that usually results in me switching to keyboard turning for the rest of the fight.

I have been wondering if there is a better way to move as well. both the mouse and the arrow pad on the keyboard are set up for right hand. I know I can move the mouse to the left but it just doesnt feel right. Right get it??

you can use W.A.S.D to move that is left handed. i don't like moving with my mouse my self.

W,A,S,D is the accepted, standerd way of moving in virtually any PC game.

The problem with keyboard turning is that its a lot slower than using the mouse. Also as a hunter moving backwards is a lot slower than turning and running and regaining distance and you should not be getting hit. You can probably keybind a button on your mouse to move backwards. Obviously that is dependant on your particular mouse. If you have one of the all singing-all dancing ones with buttons allover the place then that makes it easier.
Also sometimes if i'm lazy I use the strafe keys - default Q and E.
Edit, Just adding that I turn using the mouse :)

I know, that's why I decided to learn mouse-turning.

Well, if I turn and run, I can get into shooting range, but I can't turn around fast enough before the mob gets close again (even while mouse turning). Maybe I need to practice more.

Unfortunately, my mouse doesn't have many buttons. I bound the middle mouse button (which is really the only extra button I had), it feels kinda awkward but I hope I'll get used to it.

Yes Erinne. Practice, practice and practice some more. It took me some time to perfect it, but it really is needed especially for hunters and you will wonder how you played before tbh.
Good luck :)

Turning with the mouse is almost instant... how can it be slow???

I'm not saying that it's slow, I'm saying that I am slow. And I probably need to clean my mousepad. I have no doubt that it's possible to turn instantly with practice.

My preferred way of moving is by combining my mouse with Q-W-E, and sometimes S when I need to back up. I never use A or D, because turning that way is far too slow. I found that strifing (Q and E) while moving the mouse can be great to turn and look at what's right while still moving straight ahead. I know that you can also use the left mouse-button to check what's ahead, but I prefer to face what I'm looking at in case I need to act immediately - I hate the "has to be in front of you" message.

as far as i know, world of warcraft is the first blizzard game to move this way. a long time blizzard player myself (warcraft III: reign of chaos, diablo, diablo II/dII lord of destruction, starcraft, broodwar), the world of warcraft interface completely baffled me when i first started because all of the other blizzard games moved the same way... right clicking the mouse. knights of the old republic II: the sith lords also moves by right clicking the mouse.
---
i use the mouse to move by pressing both buttons and with "click to move" selected in the interface options, but when i need to move backwards with my hunters, i use the down arrow key, though i am certain using the S key would be more efficient since my main spell/skill keys are 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
*note to self* should practice that...
incidentally, i cannot do the hunter's 180 degree jump shot (http://www.wowwiki.com/Tips_to_playing_a_hunter#The_Jump_Shot) to save my life.

I am practising... I actually managed to get a couple shots off this way, but the mob still killed me.

Blizzard, maybe.. but a lot of other PC games really do move with those keys. I've played Neverwinter Nights and Morrowind, they both use it. And I really loved it, since it left your right hand free to use the mouse to fight or target and use things.

I should probably also mention that I'm leveling this hunter without using any armor or a melee weapon. Sort of as a challenge to myself. And if you're wondering whether I should be adding extra challenge before I master basic hunter skills, well, maybe you're right. But if I had armor and a melee weapon, I could probably never be bothered to master the jump shot, since I could just melee the mob with relative efficiency.
It's also making me understand just how dependent hunters are on their pets. With my pet, I can kill mobs while AFK, I can solo elites while naked and kill mobs four levels higher than me without breaking a sweat. Without my pet, I have to resort to running away, getting chain-dazed and aggroing a gazillion adds that tear me apart like wet tissue paper.
And a lot of things about the hunter class are just so guide-dang-it. I mean, how am I supposed to know about thar one boar mob in Redridge who can teach me Gore 4 without looking it up?

this is realy a key to playing any class which can kite. i play a mage mostly, but i use this aswell all of the time.
here is a youtube video which shows jumpshots in action :

You might have done this allready, but binding autorun to your mouse is very handy and will give you one thing less to worry about when practicing. Mouse three (pressing down the scroll wheel) works if you don't have tons of buttons on your mouse.
I also recommend setting camera follow style to "never" once you get more used to moving with your mouse. This will prevent the camera from being forced the way you are running, but it can be a bit confusing at first. It makes you able to pan all around your character freely while still running in the direction you want to go and even steer at the same time using WASD. Hold left mousebutton to look.
Mastering this will in turn remove the need for Q and E to strafe freeing up very good hotkeys for abilities or shots. I have concussive on Q, distracting on shift+Q, arcane on E and wingclip on shift+E. My mage uses Q and E for blink and frost nova (sheep and iceblock on shift+Q/E).
edit: You mentioned mouseturning being slow. Are you keeping the right mousebutton down while moving?

I do it this way:
W - Forward
S - Backward
A - Turn left
D - Turn Right
Q - Ability
E - Ability
With this set up I can move using only the keyboard, only the mouse or use both to move most effectively (strafing etc).
Hunter jump shots are really easy I don't know how people can be having trouble. Remember that the frontal shoot arc is 180 degrees so you only have to turn 91 degrees in either direction to get a shot off (assuming the mob is directly behind you ofc).
Its also worth mentioning that you can use mouse1 to look in any direction and then press mouse2 to instantly move in the direction the camera is facing.

I move forwards and backwards generally with W and S, turning is done with mouse. Also have certain abilities and macro's bound to my mouse buttons and Q and E and 1-5. Never turn with a keyboard if you PvP. You will get slaughtered.

Never been much for PvP, so that won't matter. I'm getting a lot better at the jump shots too, though I still keep running into adds/obstacles constantly. Thanks for all the advice guys!

I bind auto-run to Q, and keep the same control keys for all my characters. I suppose I could be better at various classes if I had distinct key setups, but I'm an alt-o-holic, and could never keep that many key setups straight.
I use W S for forward back, A D for strafing left right. I turn with the mouse only, holding the buttons to look around.
I use the Left button to look around while I'm auto-running, checking for enemies, either players or monsters too close to the road, or looking behind me to make sure party members are keeping up.
Right button turns, but turning the camera and the character in the direction you move. You do have to keep moving the mouse if going up the circular stairways in towers.. but I can use the keyboard arrow keys for that if I want.
I have used this in FPS games for 10 years or more, Quake, Half Life, CounterStrike, Morrowind (Duke Nukem 3D even). I consider Neverwinter as a 3rd person, and click to move.

E + slight turn to the right, or Q + slight turn to the left works a lot better.
as a hunter, if a mob runs at me, i run TOWARDS it and hit wingclip. then i run through it and start my turn-around-jump-shots.
learn to use your mouse + Q or E to do full circles around mobs. it will help tremendously.

I'm really starting to love jumpshot-kiting... already soloed Mor'ladim twice with my naked level 27 hunter using this method. Again thanks for all the help!
