I didn't see any thread like this so I figured I would make one.

Ours arrived today, two days ahead of what we'd expected, so that was the good bit.

Bad bit was that it took ages to install and then the two patches that came with it (the second of which I'm sure we've already had) took just as long. The final 41.1 mb patch, the one I'm sure I'd seen before, kept downloading and attempting to update then failing, and I'd try again. Finally, on about the fourth try with both computers, it did update and end the endless downloading. Periodically I tried to phone Blizzard tech support, but that's a lost cause today and probably will be for a few days. So that's how I've spent my day. Now for a bit of sleep and I'll try the whole thing out later. I really do wish I'd just put the two copies aside and given it a few days for things to get sorted out.

Absolutely no issues. Took a nap after getting home from work, went to the store at midnight, came home, put the disk in, started installing. Ate some late dinner, had some cake. (I made a cake the other day!) Watched a little Conan. Went back and loaded Wow, installed the patches again... And bam, I had a Death Knight up and running.

Got through the starter zone and into Orgrimmar before calling it a night. Brilliant story BTW, loved the progressive storytelling, and looking forward to more of it in Northrend.

Rested XP here I come.

Popped down into town this morning to get mine. No probs installing. Loving Howling Fjord so far - beautiful area. Some fun quests, not too crowded here yet, but I expect that to change once the kiddies get home from school/peeps come home from work. Nice variety of quests too, with plenty of the normal Blizz humour mixed in.

Downloaded the patches ahead of time. 10 mins for the DVD to install, 5 mins to run the two patches. Was one of the first ones on my server to reach Howling Fjord. Was alone on the boat and didn't see anyone till 10 mins later!

My girlfriend is going to be going out to get ours today, soon hopefully. She's already running the background downloader as her computer does not have a DVDRom.

Question:

After the installation of the XPac, did it remove or otherwise mess up your addons? Or did it leave the Interface\Addons directory alone while installing the game? I just want to see if I should backup my addons before hand.

Only played my Knight so far and i'm impressed. Got her to 59 in very quick time due to the starting area quests then headed to the battlegrounds. Seriously dangerous!! I joined Warsong about halfway through and came joint 2nd playing Unholy spec and also capped the last flag and returned 3 of ours.

One word. Lethal.

Next its off to check Northrend :)

It didn't mess with my addons, but then I shortly realized that I had no idea how the rune system worked. And it was mostly because XPearl didn't seem to display the runes. So I actually turned my addons off for the whole night. It was kind of refreshing.

I've got to go back and see if I just didn't see the Rune bits in XPearl now that I understand (sorta) how the rune system works.

To be on the safe side.. why not just copy the addon folder and store it in a safe place.. never know.. plus always nice to have a backup anyway...

Agreed, however this is the "make or break" thing... do I want the girlfriend to begin installing the game after she gets home? Preferably yes, but didn't want to have her backup the folder if she didn't have to. :)

I recently went through the whole deal with addons anyway, and since I'm using the Curse Updater it's not that bad... just a pain in the butt.

This. I was so confused when I was playing mine, and I had an epiphany when I woke up this morning for work. Remembering screen shots I'd seen, I realized that XPerl probably isn't configured (intuitively) for DKs.

Your addons will be fine, just do not let the Installer move your WoW directory for no reason whatsoever. Why Blizzard did that is beyond me.

Almost to 71, and having a blast and no lag issues at all.

However, the spawn rate could be faster for some heavily farmed mobs.

I hear alot of patching going on after installation. Do the patches dissappear or something after you install them the first time around? Wouldnt they still be on your comp somewhere? I dont understand

surodat
13-11-2008, 09:40 PM
Yeah. I had to reinstall the patches, but because I had already downloaded them, all that happened was they had to be verified.

(The WotLK DVDs are all printed with 3.0.1)

Are the CDs an earlier version? I really dont know if I could handle 2 hours of patches tonight.

WatcherZero

The reason the installer wants to move the install directory (and it would have asked for this on any of the 3.0x patches) Is because blizzard have started following Vista standard installation folders, that is unlike XP where its in the programs folder in Vista it will be in the User directorys. This also gives the executables automatic admin rights rather than you having to promote access rights on everything.

well last night I ran out to Best Buy. They had several copies of the collectors edition and since I had BC collectors I needed this one.. lol
Only issue was waiting in line.
All installed this morning ready for when I get home tonight. My son is already excited to make a DK. Since He can't level his own toons past 3? he gets a 55 to start with.. lol

Kaltes
14-11-2008, 03:25 PM
Hehe, hopefully your son can level past 55 now. :) But at least he's excited for it!

I didn't have any problems yesterday. Both mine, and my girlfriend's clients were installed fine without any issues. I created a death knight just to mess around, and of course the only thing that I had to do was to setup the addons on that toon as well... only took a few minutes because I was already so USED to it when 3.0 came out.

My girlfriend had been experiencing some problems, as she would login and would immediately get disconnected. I believe she did get a screen at one point telling her that her password may have been compromised for her to change it, and then continued having disconnect issues. I ran a spyware check and removed some cookies, nothing major was detected. She continued having issues, but she was able to stay logged in once I disabled Questhelper for her. Hopefully that was it.

All in all with that being the only problem, and also the long wait queue (expected, all be it annoying) the transition had gone relatively smooth.

So, now that my Death Knight is resting in Org, I started leveling my priest.

So Howling Fjord was basically a giant game of, "who can tag the spawning mob first"

Yeah, the queues are getting annoying. I haven't seen one on my server in a long time and it's been years since I have seen an 800+ queue. I can work around that for now but the free transfers better fix it soon.

I have the other problem that my router tends to glitch out every so often and kill my connection long enough for WoW to disconnect me. You really want to pull your hair out when you just waited in queue for 30 minutes only to be thrown right at the back of the line literally second before getting to play.

I have that same problem! What is that about? I've become so used to it I can pinpoint when it's happening, kinda like a seizure.

Any idea how to fix that? I have Vista, a BRAND NEW D-link router, and it drops every so hours or so when in use.

Xperl shows runic power and runes, you just have to turn it on. I did it just after my first fight when I got the "you are out of that kind of rune" message and realized that xperl wasn't showing the runes.

So far northrend has been very enjoyable. Very little lag on my server (and it's an original server!) and no server crashes or anything like that. I had no problem installing the game or upgrading my account, and getting to northrend wasn't that hard at all.

My own personal choice was to disable the general chat in the beginning zone. All the noobs asking stupid silly questions (LFG guild for raiding kara) was a little overboard.

Overall I'm very pleased with it. My only complaint is that I wish I had more time to play!

Love the graphics, love the environments, love many of the quests.

Hate? The amount of "named" mobs to kill and the way they are obviously camped. In some cases there are solutions how to handle them: You summon them and only you can tag them, you need to be under a spell to see them, you need to skewer the corpse, not kill them, the drop for quest spans on the ground no matter who killed.

In some cases even normal mobs are seeded in a crazy way even under normal circumstances. You need to kill 10 of them but even when the place is not farmed there are only 2-4 of them around??? Unforgiveable design flaws imho

I love the ninja looters who hang around as you are questing, and when you aggro a mob they nick in and steal your goodies (grrrrrrr ).

I love hitting mobs with my 2 x big axes.

I love riding over the top of an incline on my mount, to be amazed by more wonderful scenery.

I love questing again.

I love the cost of fixing my plate armour, and wonder if it were the real world would any bank in the world give me a loan to cover it? ( crikeys - how much?? )

I love my new haircut.

I love mining (again).

I love taking on elites higher level than me and being able to survive while I kick their arse.

I love flying on those red dragons.

I love the fact that i'll be solo'ing - and that i'll have solo'd from lvl 1 - 80.

I love those walrus creatures.

I love the fact that the opening areas are better than Hellfire bloody peninsula.

Well shoving all those players in a small amount of zones thats going to happen. Although I have found when its a certain named mob I have to kill and there are others about to fight it, if I just spam group request 99% of players have accepted. But there are always people who wouldnt help unless gold is mentioned ;)

It's amazing the number of people after a named mob for a quest, that don't think to create a group so that multiple people can get the quest. Near the starter area for Howling Fjord, I managed to invite 3 or 4 people to kill 1 named mob, and to then do the escort quest, and later again to kill a named mob in the charred vale place (can't remember the exact name!).

I'm also pleasantly surprised that there are wandering elites which haven't annoyed me by killing me. So far I'm quite enjoying Howling Fjord, and it's refreshing to see a zone that isn't as strongly coloured as a theme as some of the old world or Outland zones.

Renata

Kind of funny because I've had the opposite experience. In almost every case when I've been after a named mob and others are around, either the people there immediately invite me to group as soon as I arrive, or accept a group invite when offered.

I really love how the quests don't seen nearly as grindy. Yes, there are a certain number of "kill 10s" and collect quests, but a lot of these also involve some twist that makes them more interesting.

I'm loving it. Always accept the group invites for the one kill. You still get ninjas who do not wait in line and kill the mob right away or get the first hit in. So far this has been Horde doing it to Alliance. I should do the same right back to them but I'm a little more mature than that. Of course, if it keeps happening, I'm just going to start tagging the mob even if I don't need it.

Does anyone know if we can get one of the dragons as our mounts later? They are awesome.

One thing that does suck is when I killed an animal and turned red. I had to stay clear of the druids out there. The quest had me killing the animals!!

My biggest problem with that so far is that the named mob respawns before we can sort it all out and group up. :) My problem is that I refuse to do blind invites without asking in /say first so it adds some time to the process.

Funny ... the Horde will say it's Alliance who is more likely to do it to us.

I think the real answer is we don't notice it as much from our own faction.

I will admit it hasn't been too terribly bad for the killing for me @ Borean Tundra. However, when I was on my lowbie in Zangarmarsh, there was horde death knight after death knight stealing my kills while I waited 20+ minutes to be able to kill something. Having the pet on aggressive and everything didn't help out, as some how the DK was still able to hit first.

Fortunately if I have any issues on my shadow priest... SW: Death works nicely, and I have a mouse button already set for targeting anyways. It has been RARE to see someone of the same faction as me on the quest so I wouldn't be able to invite.

I do that normally, but have stopped doing it in WotLK. I haven't had one refusal, we get the mob done, then disperse. Most people understand when they get the invite what is going on so its not much of an issue.

I don't even have the expansion yet (curse you, usually reliable internet store!), but I'm loving the fact that I can now walk around Shat without my PC grunting and farting like one of those dying Kodo in Desolace.
What I'm not particularly loving is trying to level my Shaman in Outland, I'm perpetually aurally assaulted by the DK mount sound (minor grumble, obviously!), the constant duel request while I am killing quest mobs!?(not-so-minor grumble), and the fact that if I don't automatically jump into a party with a Dk when asked I'm some kind of dribbling idiot who probably shouldn't own the game (full-on gnashing and wailing of teeth grumble). In their humble opinion, naturally.
But from reading the respenses here...I'm already loving it, and will be even more so when I actually own it!
