View Full Version : Some of the best fun I've had in this game for a while

There've been a lot of negative posts lately about Blizzard and the recent patch and the expansion, some unwarranted, I think.
Over this past weekend I had some of the most enjoyable gameplay I've ever had in this game, creating and taking a Death Knight through the initial quests. I'm not going to reveal details or give hints, but the quests seemed less tedious than the normal levelling-up ones and more varied. One, involving ballistae and soldiers, is both tough and a lot of fun. All in all, it was a great weekend thanks to the expansion, and I have to congratulate Blizzard on something I thought was really well-done.
Agreed, WOTLK is a really enjoyable experience. Already near lvl 72 which for me is amazing as im only a 2-3 hour a day gamer. The areas are great (graphics are incredible tbh with wonderful landscapes) and not too difficult to get into. My chars a Warrior and its the most fun i've had since I begun to play the game many years ago (ok 2 but levelling a warrior seems to take a lifetime). Its the first time playing a Warrior that i've actually felt like I can take on the world. Taking lvl 75 mobs on with my lvl 71 titans grip warrior is ace, as long as theres not too many mobs.
My son is playing on my death knight lvling him up, while i level my main which is a bonus. Now i'm trying to get the wife hooked so we can make our family guild to take on the big guys later on.
Well done Blizzard - a cracking game just got better.

I noticed (between the questions on Channel 1 that started 'How do I' or 'Where do I find') there were a lot of favourable comments from people who seemed to be having a lot of fun. There seemed too to be less insulting stuff, fewer shouts of 'Noob!' and more genuine interest in helping each other. One player who made many insulting rude remarks was quickly told to stop it by a bunch of us and did, after apologising! Good to see those reasonable attitudes which seemed lately to have disappeared from a lot of the game.

Wotlk revived this game for me, and I'm loving every moment. Death knight is just a great class and I'm having trouble deciding whether to make it my main or keep my prot pala.
While thinking about that I'm duoing Outland with a friend, soloing the amazing looking Northrend content on my pala and maybe I'll even get to duo Northrend with my priest and a friend. New content is always more fun than old and its nice to have company while playing, but I just really like the areas and quests. Can't wait to try out tanking Utgarde Keep and Nexus as soon as my connection gets a bit more stable.
Oh yes..I am loving the expansion so far. Doing all quests in BT and HF and already lv 74 just in 2 zones (but because everybody does 'em, some quests are badly camped)
But with all the great graphics and enjoyable quests, there is ofc still this :)

It certainly is a lot of fun. My main problem is choosing which Death knight or "main" to level first so i'm kind of doing the rounds and swapping characters constantly ;)
But I guess most of us have that predicament tbh.

just hit 75 and doing lvl 77 q's on my war is great fun. i normaly hate doign quests but these seem to be a bit more than just go kill x mobs.
the graphics are a bit better with really nice scenery. the only thing im finding is the lvl 77/78 are a little hard to deall with if i got more than 2 or 3 but hey thats the old life of a war who can only stand toe to toe.
soon as my war hits 80 ill use the rested bonus on my hunter and priest to take it in turns getting to 80 then maybe ill think about a dk

It's such good fun and, as someone else said in this thread, the quests really seem fresher and different somehow, not just the 'kill Ogg and bring me his left eyeball' ones. You get a real sense of being involved in an ongoing war.
My death knight had to be a Gnome. Go ahead, laugh. Lots have. But I do love those Gnomes.

questing in the game is way to easy today you don't need to kill the mobs anymore just go when others are fighting them shoot once and you get the point for them..

Yep, and everybody remembers the good old days. Like Grandpa saying 'Waal, sonny, when I wuz yer age I walked 40 miles to school barefoot through snow ten feet deep and was glad of the chance'. Things change all the time. Games too.

You don't get credit for tagged mobs in a "Kill xxx quest" What are you talking about?

im so glad for both howling fjord and borean tundra. im barely out of those zones but omg they're awesome. i dont have to run miles just to get to quest objectives (unlike barrens, stonetalon, ashenvale, arathi, duskwood, omg the worse desolace before they gave you mounts at 30!), but yea, things are really condensed and everything seems really busy. there's actual war going on right at everyone's footsteps. there is a sense of urgency to everything that that kinda makes the game awesome too.
and the only way Tralkar's post would make sense is if he tagged mobs that are fighting with npc's.

Yeah, they did a very good job. The quests are generally more fun, the scenery is lovely and if you've not instanced, do Nexus, UK, Azjol-Nerub (which has my fave thing in an instance so far) and Ahn'kahet. All of the instances are a blast so far.

I agree, with most, having a ball. DKs are really cool and Love Dalaran.
However I did UK the other night and i was a little disappointed, it was fun but maybe our epics are OP for the first few instances so that new 70s in greens can do them. I just felt it was a little simple and easy, ill try heroic next see if its more of a challenge.

Did Drak'tharon Keep tonight (and A-N and Ahn'kehat again). I kind of agree with Drewid in that my badge gear, FWS/SS stuff is still better than the drops I've seen, though some are close. And, well, Drak is a 74-76 instance and most of us were 72. No CC, no deaths. So, while it's fun... the instances are almost too forgiving in that if you're a decent player in good gear... you're not going to die. In 5 instances and multiple runs the only 2 wipes were on the second to last boss in Ahn'kehat.

I'd say that has always been true. Don't forget that you're used to fighting up to +3 mobs from raiding. All that +hit gear makes you very effective at handling content over your level. I bet a "fresh off the boat" L68 who levels to L72 won't have it so easy.

Eventually those instances will be run by people who have no Outland epics, and have to run the instance in their quest greens/blues. That's what those places are aimed at, not for bored raiders in full epics who cry about instances being too easy for them. Don't blame the instance, blame your gear.
And Det, I think Tralkar meant the glitch that seems to go around, where people can steal your kill even after you've done considerable damage. I've had this happen to me a few times as well, and I wonder if this will be taken care of in the next hotfix. Same goes for those few quests that seem to be bugged.

after a few day of paid vacation its back to work, glad I got my DK to 70 just before the end of it :p, havent played this much wow in a long time (and not planning to do any soon either jeesh :P)
Must say I love the expansion, didnt see much of northrend yet (did nexus on my rogue damn nice looking instance btw) so looking forward to getting some hours in leveling in howling fjord, won't be till next week though, ah well at least it will be quiet then :p

Well I think the expansion looks pretty nice, although I don't really enjoy the crowded "starter" areas, it takes soooo much time doing quests sometimes, expecially because I have to work during daytime and play in the evenings. -.-
So for the time being I'm just farming Saronite nodes in that new jungle area (with the meanie Nesingwary hunters present again) and earning big money to get my other lvl70s an epic flyer! I make at least 1k gold a day! :)
Too bad more and more people get the level to be able to fly now and quest in lvl75-77 monster areas (of course they're peanuts for a lvl71 lock) so it'll come to an end pretty soon ..

QFT. I had expected to be pushing my shaman main to level 80 glory, and indeed, this is what I promised my guild. :embarassed: I woke up the morning after iWrath's midnight release, came downstairs to be greeted by my elder son who had gone to Milwaukee to buy our copies the evening before. Unfortunately, my younger son and I share an account, and even more unfortunately, we share a SERVER. My older son smiled at me and said.. "Here you go, Mom.... it's installed, upgraded, and you're all ready to go, make that death knight!" (before his little brother woke up to spoil the occasion) I did...and then I hit enter world. Just to take a look at it, you know. I started playing, and for the first time in...well..ages... was shocked to hear a ding because I hadn't been watching my xp bar at all. So I did all the quests, loving every second. I told myself, okay, fine, this will get old when I get out into Draenor and the same old, same old quests. I'm still loving every second of it, and I guess my shaman can wait, because for the first time in a long, long, long time, I feel like i'm playing again.

Brought this us last night to some friends.
I actually have to pay attention with DK or DPS becomes crap. I MUST apply my diseases before going to the big attacks since my damage is so dependent on them.
During Beta it felt awkward but I didn't spend enough time to try to "get" it.
Second time around, I "get" it and love it.

I continue to have fun with my Death Knight. In fact, I haven't played anyone else since I created him. I really like all the different and new things that go with the class. Part of the enjoyment is that the little things like getting flight points, levelling up in First Aid (always a pain in the neck, it's done so strangely with that combination of books and trainers) are out of the way. Blizzard surely did get it right on this one.

Don't get me wrong, I like the instances. A-N has my favorite transition from one area to the next in the game, Nexus is just really cool looking, Ahn'kehat's last boss made me laugh it was so fun and even Drak had a really cool mechanic (think ZF combined with Najentus on a much smaller scale).
Has anyone else done the undercity questline yet and noticed this?
Well basically my armour was mullered, so i went to orgrimmar to fix it but it was full of refugees. So i had to see thrall and ended up in undercity .... you get the picture.
I thought cos my armour was knackered I thought i'd better not do the quest so i cancelled it. Imagine my surprise when the flag appeared on my back and i was fighting with thrall etc...
Now because i'd cancelled the quest i didnt complete it - get any rewards. However the following made me laff.
1. My armour was virtually non existant - red/yellow. OK Ive got some epics etc, but no armour should mean no win shouldn't it?
2. I'm only lvl 71 warrior ffs. I know I got a buff, but Isnt this meant to be a lvl 74 quest?
3. I finished it? Should that have happened or has WOW gone soft?
4. How did I finish it - I cancelled it - but the flag still appeared - Bug?
Still seeing Thrall kick some arse was fun.

Its a scripted event (or interactive cutscene) rather than a serious quest. I don't think it is possible to fail.
I hit 80 on Sunday evening and enjoyed levelling up immensely. I think the normal instances are too easy and I skipped most of them on the way up. Yesterday I went to my first heroic and was very pleased to find that it was actually a challenge!

Im 76 on my warrior. I havent even created a dk yet (hopefully my name is still available). It seems like I have so much to do. I always do the dalaran cooking daily, and I love the daily where you go capture 12 wolvar pups, its just too funny. I really like the fact that the dailies are available from the get-go so If I only have 30 mins to play and Im close to wyrmrest temple, i can just do that and not worry about having to log in the middle of an epic quest chain. I still have 3 toons to level, though I imagine it wont be quite so fun by the time im on my last toon.
Playing a prot warrior has been great. Sometimes for the "kill x worgen" or "collect x ears" I can just round up a group of 5-6 mobs and kick the crap out of them, taking minimal damage. I actually have a healing ability (3 min cooldown) which makes me feel extra special. I find that my offense is greatly improved when I have more mobs poking at me. And the majority of my gear is northrend group quest/dungeon rewards (havent got a single tanking drop yet!). The only gear I have from old school is the bulwark of ancient kings, and it looks so garish and flashy compared to my scary looking northrend stuff that i just cant wait to ditch it. All in all its been really great. Wish i had more time off lol.

Why not create a Death Knight so you can be sure of having the name you want, and then just let him or her sit there and improve with age a bit until you want to start playing?

Hey Semi,
You know your shaman will get that surprise ding too right? I think I felt the exact same as you. I wanted to create a DK and maybe toy around with her for a bit and got sucked in. Then I went to play my main "for a bit" and got sucked in. I don't want to discourage you from enjoying your DK but I bet a lot of that "it feels like I'm playing again" will be there for your shaman.
I'm torn between replaying old content in a fresh and new way (DK) and playing new content in an old and familiar way (in a good sense) with my Lock.

Actually, I have been on my shaman. And I still found myself watching my xp bar crawl at a mesmerizingly slow rate of speed. I found it sad that the greatest joy I have experienced on her was... "Oooo! Look! A new kind of fish! Can I fish it? Sure can! Can I...cook it? Sure can!" I know that, honestly, she has been pretty much the only toon I really played, and maybe those two and a half years have caught up with her and she needs a break. I was leveling another toon as well, and the thought of getting on that one kind of makes me queasy.

My name is Dak and I have Altitis.
But now more then ever its a problem. I love my shaman and I have been working him as my main in the new content but I am only 71 atm and its been going slow. I got my 70 hunter out to the new areas but I havent been able to give him any attention. My mage is stuck at 67 and I desperately want to get 68 so I can bring him to the new areas and two box him with the shaman again but its an effort to get it set up. I also have my DK who is 61 and I am fighting the urges to just log him on and level him all night.
Plus, thanks to the girlfriend playing I have a bunch of other alts that I use to help her. A second shammy stuck at 55, a rogue at 50, a lock at 50, and a 39 pally.
I am strapping in this weekend and doing nothing but getting my main shaman levels and hoping to get him 73 by the end of the weekend.
I am loving the game, it just stinks that by the time I get home it takes me 30-40 minutes to actually log on.

I'm in the "I love WOTLK" boat too.
It's 4:21am for crying out loud! :D
The environments are great, the NPC's are interesting and the quests are of the "just one more then I'll go to bed" variety.
I've been on this bloody game for 4 hours straight and enjoyed every minute.
(Especially when the idiot Night Elf Rogue tried to gank my Death Knight and quickly gave up. I let him flee 20 yards as I converted a Rune for Health and then used Death Grip to pull his face into the blade of my 2-handed axe! /hug )
I especially love all the Blue items I've walked away with. 70% of them soulbound but the rest can go on the auction house/my alts.
Nice work Blizzard. Well worth the money.

I haven't spent much but I'm only 74. Finally got a drop that rivaled my PvP pants. Except it was worse because of enchants - So I dropped 200 gold to enchant a green piece of gear. What's funny is when I woke up, I had made 400 gold from the AH so all was good.

Their strategy was to bring people back, and to keep people at the game even if they aren't good "at all" at PvP/Pve/even RP. Hence Achievements. They just did an overall revamp of a few basic game mechanics and it turned out great.

Well speaking of engineering and having fun. We tried a Stormwind raid on the weekend. Yes, it was an epic fail i was one of two who actually made it to the king, if only to die at his feet. (We hit a wall of ally just thru the entrance).
But the fun part as I was lying there looking at the ceiling wondering how to get out of there in amongst all the camping 80s, a flagged lvl 6 came into the room. He was strutting and yelling about how good the allies were, alright I couldnt resist, need to take someone down, so I rezzed aimed my "Rocket Gloves" at the lvl 6 - Bam rocket to the face - dead Alli - I then potted hit my mitigation CDs, hit my "Rocket Boots" and made a break down the corridor to freedom, as my RBs ran out I cast Army of Dead and kept running - my god are the ghouls funny or what? they were jumping off the walls onto allies, total confusion.
Path of frost and jump into the canal im free! D'oh death gripped back to reality and death.
I wish i had of seen the dudes face playing the lvl 6. :) as the rockect blast hit him.
