Well, since it's already pretty much certain that I'll never get my account back, I guess I might as well confess - I shared an account that wasn't mine in the first place. I know that's a very dumb thing to do, but I didn't when I started playing.
I guess I should tell the story of how the account came to be mine. My uncle bought or got the account off some random guy he met on the internet. The original owner had a couple low-level characters on it. My uncle made a warlock, leveled to around 40, got bored and gave the account to my dad. My dad was a pretty dedicated player, he had 3 lvl70s who he raided with. Sometime around then I started playing too. Of course we didn't bother to make a new account for me, especially since I didn't even know if I would keep playing for long. My brother and sister also played on the account, though less than me.
Eventually my father stopped playing and the account was pretty much left to me (though my brother still played on it occasionally). My main was my only lvl70, and although she didn't have loads of gold or impressive gear, I had put a lot of time and effort into her. I collected vanity pets and leveled two crafting professions to 375. I also had several alts who I was quite attached to.
Then one day I clicked on a link on the official forums that was later said to be a keylogger. I ran my virus check (AVG anti-virus), and it didn't find anything, so I figured I was safe. A couple days later, though, when I attempted to log on the official forums again, it said my password was incorrect. I was actually logged onto the game at the time, so I guess I was luckier than most in that I could get my final goodbye with my characters (damn that sounds so melodramatic :hanky:). I opened a GM ticket, but of course nothing came of it. Eventually I had to log off, and that was the last I ever saw of my account.
Phew.
I'm not asking for sympathy here; I know that what I did was very stupid. I just... needed to get this out, I guess. You can also take this as a cautionary tale, with two morals: a) don't buy accounts, and b) avoid the official forums like the plague.

That is really sad. I would be devastated. And I'm not going to ream you about what happened cuz it sounds like you learned a very valuable lesson. So are you not getting the account back at all?

This game is so much fun and completely involving why would people not want to take a few steps to protect the time they have invested?
Think of all the time you played. If the account was in your name you would have a very good chance in getting your characters and gear back. Even if you got a key logger.
I simply dont understand why people would do this.
I feel a little sorry for you, only because I would be destroyed if I lost my account.

Story I always tell to warn people away from "acquiring" accounts....
We were not aware that my guild's main tank was actually playing on an account he had purchased from his college roommate. So, happy to have a competent tank, we dragged this toon all of the way to Black Temple with us, and as MAIN tank, gave it gear preference. So, what had started as a heroic gear tank became t5/t6 equipped. Which was, of course, when the roommate (with the billing information, email address and secret question) decided to repossess it. :(

Very sorry for you. I don't think Blizzard's intention is to stop members of the same family sharing an account but the rule is aimed at people attempting to exploit the game to make money or defraud people. What I don't understand is why your uncle didn't just create a new account to begin with - it is free and the account he aquired only had low level characters on it.

Sorry to hear that Erinne :(
I personally don't think you did too much wrong. Hell, I just found out that some friends that play buy gold (not on any of my realms I will add). That pisses me off more tbh.
I hope you intend to return and do the grind again!?

Nah, I think I'm done with WoW for now. Don't really like the thought of starting over from zero. Even though I could level faster now, I couldn't get back everything I had on my old account. And to be fair, I guess I was becoming a bit addicted too, so maybe it's better if I quit for a while.

Is this a joke?

How could anyone think that a message like that was anything but a keylogger? Also you can't even click on links as they removed the ability to link outside the official forums a long time ago. You actually have to copy and paste that into the address bar to keylog yourself.

No joke, I'm afraid. I really was that stupid. And yes, I did copy and paste the link instead of clicking, but the meaning remains the same.
Don't remember what the keylogger message was. It might have been the one about T7 set bonuses, or something similar.

lol, sorry man but i have no sympathy for people who get keylogged. i've been around the net long enough to know.
its like driving, either you are born a naturally good driver and will never get into an accident, or your first one smartens you up, or you keep getting into accidents.

OP, sorry for your loss really. You were naive when you started, and are paying for the mistakes you made when you didnt know better. Tough break, but enjoy real life :)

And what about the people who haven't been around the net long enough to know? What about the people who's primary experience of the internet is playing WoW and who haven't come up through the culture of forums? You don't feel sympathy for them then? Well that is a pretty poor attitude. Hope it's nice up there in your ivory tower.

If that's what you think about driving then I hope and pray that I never meet you on the road. Driving takes learning, awareness and concentration ... it is not a god-given skill, it's something that every driver needs to work at, constantly in order to keep themselves, their passengers and other people safe. I think that's a better simile for the way people function on the internet ... it's certainly less self-righteous.

to continue...
so i was watching nascar and saw an accident. why would they let bad drivers driver those hundred thousand dollar cars anyway!?? that makes no sense. but then i thought... oh that's right.. peter's logic made no sense.
