1. World of Warcraft (we may call it Classic or Vanilla) is the original game. You do not need TBC (The Burning Crusade, WoW's first expansion) nor do you need WOTLK, (the second expansion) to play WoW. You can start playing using World of Warcraft itself and still be able to interact with people playing the expansion sets. Most of the content from 1-60 is The original game, and you wont be in level range to enter Outland (where TBC's content takes place) until level 58. Take note that if you go with WoW Classic at first, you cannot create a Bloodelf or a Dreanei...these are TBC specific.

You can choose to buy The World of Warcrafe Battle Chest, it has both WoW and TBC as well as a strategy guide (outdated as of the current patch), or you could get all three off the bat and level through the whole thing...there are still many people playing for the first time or leveling alts.

2. The game will ask you to choose your location (North America . Oceanic, etc) and you select your server type (Normal .. we call it PvE for Player vs. Enviorment... or PvP. Once you choose a server and select a server type, it will assign you to a server based on your location... you can accept this or choose a different server.

One word of advice if you decide to roll onto a PvP server as a first timer.. roll a Rogue (stealth is helpful) or roll a Druid.

3. Yes, in order to play TBC you need WoW and to play WOTLK you need both WoW and TBC intstalled. There's no way around this.

4. Yes. Wow has an authentication key .. so does TBC and so does WOTLK. You can only create one account per key and you get one key per game.

So for you and your brother, you could play the same account with different characters (very risky and as WoW goes this will hinder the both of you as you go further into the game).

Its best for each of you to have your own copy of the game on seperate computers and play that way. .

5. WoW is also pay to play. $15 a month or less if you choose a package deal.

1. Diffrence is Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King are Expansions.
2. If you want to PVP all the time then yes. if you want to PVP when you feel like it then do a PVE.
3. Yes. they are extensions of the original game. and you will need Burning crusade to be able to play Wrath. original game gets you from level 1-60, BC gets you from 60-70, Wrath lvl 70-80.
4. they do have cd-keys. so unless you guys share the account, he will have to buy his own copy.

NVM, i posted mine almost same time at Gorny and his is the better answer

if you make a account with BC, then when you get WotLK, all you need to do is register the cd-key.

WoW original is where the levels 1-60 are done at. BC is for level 60-70

Not quite. Although you do need TBC to level from 60-70 (and WOTLK to get from 70-80) theres also added extras in TBC that will affect your gameplay from 1-60.

If you want to play a Blood Elf or Dranei level 1-60 then you will need the original and the Burning Crusade expansion.

you will also need TBC if you want to take jewelcrafting as a profession.

Actually, it's against the EULA for two brothers to share an account. The only people who can share an account under Blizzard's rules is for one parent to share an account with a minor child (under 18).

So, if you want to be totally square with the Terms of Service, you and your brother need separate accounts.

1. Original Wow gave us- the original races, the original classes, leveling to 60 in the continents of Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms, with a professional skill cap of 300. If this is all you buy, this is all you get.
2. The Burning Crusade added: Draenei and Blood elves as playable races. Access to their starting zones for all characters. Outlands. Professional cap of 375. Jewelcrafting as a profession. Leveling from 60-70.
3. Wrath added: Death Knights as an optional, unlockable class with a few restrictions. (you must already have one 55 or higher toon on the server you wish to create one, and can have only one per server) The ability to travel to Northrend. Another hike in the professional cap (i think it's 450, but don't quote me on that). And leveling from 70-80.

As each expansion stacks on the one before it, you must have purchased all of the ones before where you want to be. But yes, if you don't want a new race, or to level in their starting zones, if you don't have your heart set on jewelcrafting, etc, you can only buy classic until you get close to the level cap and do just fine.
