err, I meant to say: BAD NEWS: New STAR WARS MMO looks like it's WORTH looking into.
The features that I'm reading so far in the game will make the game succeed in today's saturated MMO market
In the same way, Apple, a company that had never made a cell phone before, has revolutionized the mobile comunications landscape with the Iphone by using it's strengths in interface design, Bioware, with it's assembled team of players tha thas worked on over 40 MMORPGS, has the potential to turn the MMO world upside down with the best in-class expertise in character-driven RPG storytelling. That, combined with the Star Wars universe, means The Old Republic has all the ingredients of a game-changer in the making.
The game will be the most story driven MMORPG out there on the market right now. Never before in the history of MMOs have there been quests with multiple out-comes depending on your actions, and with those actions having long-term effects. The quests will seem very 'real' in the fact that they won't be tedious or any of that, the missions you'll see in this game will have the quality that you're familiar with on offline RPGs
(Bioware on the state of MMORPGS): "We love MMMOs, we play pretty much all of them collectively, and we think there are a lot of amazing games out there, but think we're adding something new. In addition to exploration, customization, progression, and comabt, we're adding a meaningful story that you get to play through as a character.
Another hallmark of this game is it's chompanion characters - NPcs that join the players' party and not only fight alongside him, but also interact with him socially and react toh is choices. You can romance them, amek friends witht hem, betray them, and they can even decide to leave your party if they don't like what you're doing.
Also, they said their game engine (HeroEngine) will help reshape the way MMOs are played.
of course that's just the tip of the iceberg, this is just the SMALL amount of info that was released earlier, they said they'll continue to unviel new things and new features.
Ca-Ching ?
This is bad news. Blizzard needs continue to break new ground in this market if they want to last.
If there's one thing I hate, it's a threat to my WoW

I dont think WoW has anything to fear. Even if half the people playing left WoW, it would still be far and away the most popular MMO.
You need to relax ;)

Doesn't matter if one person has the greatest idea in the entire world and they make a game out of it and almost everyone in World of Warcraft wants to play it, they would be making it initially, and it would die down by the time it came out (It took WoW over 4 years of making to get it to the Alpha stage.)... Honestly, doesn't matter what you do. Things get old, people stop caring. Look at Warhammer, supposedly 50% of the people went back to WoW in under a month.
I'm not into Star Wars, or just about any Sci Fi anything, other than Starcraft, and even if Star Wars was twice the game WoW is and I enjoyed it more, I'm still too close minded to go to play something that I've disliked my entire life, and I've thought was ridiculous my entire life.

This isn't really news at this point. I'm not sure where they are in development except that the last thing I saw on it only had concept drawings. So, I'm betting bioware is in early stages.
The thing is Bioware is known for awesome RPGs which is 1/2 of the MMORPG equation. Honestly, even though its my favorite franchise, Starwars has been very much a disappointment in the gaming scene for a little while now. It remains to be seen whether or not a kick ass developer can take a HUGE geeky franchise and turn it into the next online cultural phenomena or whether it will be the latest contender to get KO'd by the champion.

It won't kill WoW, no matter what. They have said their focus is story, not PvP and not Raiding. You will get something more like WAR in terms of instancing, small groups following an epic storyline.
If they pull off what they are planning, expect AoC style story (the first part of the game anyways with all the speech), WoW questing, and WAR instancing, with probably small PvP elements.
We should end up with something different and hopefully enjoyable. They have the graphics engine up but beyond that we don't know anything.

Actually I just read that Blizzard is excited for Bioware and it's mmorpg:
"They are an excellent company and they're utilizing a well-known franchise as the backbone for that game. I think the combination of those two things bodes well for them, just because not everybody can say [that]."

Well I just read an interview that they have new plans for PvP as well. I mean, there is still alot of new features and information that is yet to be unvieled.
I'm with Blizzard on this, I'll continue to play WoW but I'll also check out this game.

Well the thing about all these MMOs that came out recently is that they haven't been better than WoW. One of the main reasons as to why WoW is king in the MMO world is becuase there hasn't been not ONE absolutely amazing game to come out after it, not one.
This new Star Wars game looks it'll break good ground, plus BioWare is like Blizzard in the fact that every game they made have been amazing.
I honestly think they won't be bitter about eachother though, I mean like I said Blizzard have already announced that they're glad for Bioware and what not, so who knows they could potentially form a friendship and then everybody is happy.
one thing though:
Notice how blizzard never came out with this support for other mmorpgs that came out recently? I think it's because Blizzard finalyl found an amazing mmorpg that'll come out.

Yeah but how many of those were made by Bioware? There was supposed 'EverQuest Killers' back in the 90s and early 2000s but then a AAA company (Blizzard) came out. Now enter Bioware.
I'm not saying it'll kill it, but I'm saying it'll change the way mmos are played and it'll be probably be an amazing game with a variety of uniqe features. it COULD give WoW a run for it's money though who knows.

I wouldn't say just because they're from or not from Bioware really matters. Some good companies have had thier shot and not even made a dent. Some of those companies can be considered to be better than Bioware; but that is opinion. I have never placed Bioware at the top of the game development pile, it is very subjective to do so, and near enough to flame bait to crown any single developer as such.
I'll say this much. Sony, Square Enix, Turbine, Funcom, Mythic, Flagship, and Arenanet; plus dozens I haven't mentioned have thrown thier chips in. I don't see what makes Bioware immune to the same reality that faced the other companies.
To be honest, I'm thinking of locking this as flame bait. the whole "BAD NEWS", caps locked and all in the thread title looks highly antagonistic; from a first time poster it looks like a troll thread to me.

Meh. I can't stand Star Wars, and I can't express how completely and totally unthrilling I find the idea of an mmorpg based on it. I'll let you know when I'm scared.

The thought of turning an RTS into an MMORPG sounded like a ridiculous idea at first too.

Where did I use the term ridiculous? I did not. I don't think it's any more ridiculous to turn Star Wars into an mmorpg than any of the other mmos running around. I said... I (me. personally. Semiiramiis. Damaris/Erasmis/Ranith/Belaziel. Melissa) hate Star Wars. Nothing ridiculous in that statement. I said I found the idea of an mmo based on it extremely unappealing and would not consider playing one. And yes, it really sounds like you're trying to stir up some hype for this game. And, quite bluntly, this is one player who's not biting.

I'll agree with that.

Probably, but what were you expecting in the OT section, from a first time poster no less?

Now I'll admit if they can get this going I will be interested, simply because then I know Blizzard can do it. This would solve the lower level dungeon player shortages. But given the complexities involved, I wonder whether this is really possible at all. It sounds too advanced.
I wonder if this Star Wars game will have the interactive environment that Star Wars The Force Unleashed had. In the trailers it looked pretty cool.
