My DK is only 58, but I thought I would level a couple of professions to at least 300 before I head to the Outlands.
I chose Enchanting/Mining. My plan was to run thru a bunch of low level instances to level Enchanting. I've never really leveled Enchanting, but at the rate I'm going it's going to take forever.
Currently I'm at 125. I spent about 3-4 hours yesterday running thru SM, Dead Mines, RFC, and BFD, multiple times.
Lots of greens dropped in RFC, and lots of greens/blues dropped in Dead mines, but not so much in BFD and SM.
I am thinking about hitting up Dead Mines and SFK or just saying screw it and go head to the Outlands to level.
Anyone else have this same issue? Should I stick with the professions or just level?
I'm also thinking I could just make some greens and blues with my Druid, level 70, who is 370 in LW for my DK to DE for mats to level Enchanting........

I'm trying to do mining and herbalism on my DK. I had the same thought about getting to 300 before going to Outlands so I wouldn't have to just run by all those flowers and ores without stopping to help myself. It started in Plaguelands when I kept seeing rich thorium everywhere and no miners in sight. Judging from the deforestation and the strip mining evidence, they were all in the lower zones still leveling up ahead of me.
Try SFK for some quick blue drops to DE. You should be able to run that in about 15 minutes.

Yeah, I'm not really bothering with my DKs professions until I hit 80.

DK Professions don't start at at least 225? O.o Really? That's a bit of BS IMO.
"Oh check out my big bad ass hero class, yeah, he owns... Hang on, gotta go to Ashenvale to pick a flower."

I'd rather finish leveling professions on my primary characters first.

hehe...it's not enough to get 55 free levels, a free suit of gear and a free epic ground mount....
Cooking and fishing also starts at 0...while FA is 275.
No professions for my DK....

i tried to go engineering/LW i have given up on leatherworking though. Since this will be my new main i simply don't have the cash yet for two crafting professions. Dropped LW. Engineering is at 375 now.
I just really don't want to level mining. I think i'll wait with that until i am at least 77.

I'm not leveling a DK, but the majority of DKs I know in our guild have said they are not bothering with professions until they are 80.

I went engineering/mining with mine but its rough. This will be my first engineer and miner and its a pain in the ass. Is tough to level up mining when everyone and there brother is doing the samething. Then you go to the AH to try to buy some ore to smelt and you see the cheapest stuff in there is all 700% over the market price.
I am 260 engineering and 155 mining. Cant get it any higher until i get mining up because I refuse to spend the money on the AH.

Translation: "Damn, why can't they give me more....? After all, I already got 55 free levels, a free mount, and a bunch of free gear, experience, etc. Let me have all of the professions however I choose them, at high levels also..."

I wouldn't have minded, personally.
Leveling Mining + Skinning as, unfortunately, my Druid is a Leatherworking Engineer. Which isn't the most practical of combinations come leveling time.

My dk is currently at 77, I max'd out skinning prior to heading to northrend (took 4 hours), and im at 364 lw.. my old toon was guild lw so, kinda wanted to keep providing the service for guildies... the last 11 points will suck since the lw items i need to make to get the points are mostly from bc rep grinds.. =/

Funny really. 10 days ago I couldnt sell me stockpile of ores. Now even copper and tin goes for nutty prices. Read 10 - 15 per stack ;)
OT no need until later levels. My skinner and my miner get the mats.

It's a reasonable request. I mean DKs are the Hero class. Hero classes should have all of the above that you mentioned and two professions to at least 225 or so.

Or they could have done it with some specialized quests (like they did the talents and mount etc. in the starting zone) after going to SW / Ogrimmar.
Something that would allow you to skill up to 300 faster once you chose your gathering professions.
The First Aid, the extra gold, the blue gear, having all the FPs, and the epic mount....all of those were designed along the idea of, this is what a character would have by the time they reached level ~59. They could have put in a way to do at least gathering professions that way as well. I think the crafting ones should still have to start from 0 since it represents a craft you are learning.

Are you guys seriously *****ing at me because I expect a hero class to be a hero and understand the world, since he's starting at 55? Oh no, excuse me for Blizzard making him have good gear. I'd prefer gear that would expire at starting quests in Outland with professions that start at a reasonable level over the current system.
I guess that when you think of a hero you think of someone who's capable of strength beyond the average person, but just can't seem to handle making a level 20 potion, or picking a flower in a level 10 zone, or any of that. Sorry, guess my version of a hero is a little different.

I've just started levelling my DK's skinning and Herbalism.
It's boring me senseless. Gotta focus on the easy gold!

If you have gathering professions Outland is easy, if you don't... Ouch.

i "wasted" the last two play sessions to level my mining. 375 and i think i lost some braincells. That was boring. Now i am 385 engi and 375 mining. I should be set to get those up when i hit 80.

Im waiting until 80 to level mining/blacksmithing. It will be borring as hell but leveling mining works better if you play window mod and watch a movie at the same time. :)
Thank god for that 24" screen! ;D

yeah i took mining and jewelcrafting. The mining part was painful, i smelted as much as possible but there were still holes where you had to go find some nodes to mine. It almost made me sick, but I finally got it up. jewelcrafting is pretty cool, i didnt have one in my toon roster so now I have a weaponsmith/armorsmith, jewel monkey, leatherworker and tailor/enchanter. I spend way too much time playing this game but its fun to be self sufficient for the most part. Alt hopping ftw.

I spent a few hours right after finishing the DK starting zone wandering around leveling up herbs. I did a few quests in Outland, then when I had to head back to Azeroth for something, I'd pick some flowers for a while. It went really well.
Since I waited until I had a new toon to pick up Inscription, I leveled that along the way. It went really well - I maxed out herbs before hitting 74, and have all the trainable inscription recipes (420 or so). I now have 2 herb gatherers, but I figured I'd be better off that way than with a gatherer for a trade I didn't have.
As for the hero class discussion - Blizzard's definition of hero is currently "Death Knight". If the starting stats, professions, gear, or whatever changes, that will be the new definition. By all means, make suggestions to Blizzard about how you feel the class could be improved. I'm afraid that most people already think Death Knights are overpowered as it is (during the 58-70/72 level range), so adding more benefits will not be popular.

I dont see the point in levelling crafting professions before levelling. Most of what you make wont be used while levelling anyway. Gathering professions are another matter tho. It would drive me crazy running by all those nodes and ignoring them. My DK levelled Skinning (easy) and Mining (painful as you cant smelt all the way) before entering Outland. When I reach level 80 Ill make a decision on what crafting professions (if any) I want on him.

'S true, though, and the funny thing is that while I've been trundling my guy around Elwynn Forest, picking Peacebloom, he's been attacked endlessly by level 5 mobs. He's embarrassed enough about this floral gathering at his stature without having to pick Murlocs off with one smash.

Was home sick yesterday and was able to get my shaman to level 73, my mage to 69 and my DK's mining to 280 and his engineering to 300. Mining has got to be the worst gathering skill there is!

I actually spent the previous month before Frozen Throne getting together ores to smelt to level my mining and the remaining bars I needed to powerlevel both professions to 300 (well, with blacksmithing, enough to get it up higher to build lionheart executioner, which lasted me til 75). By 77, mining and BSing were maxed.
But I also had the resources to pull this off.
