Kanye West - Love Lockdown - Saturday Night Live 12/13/08 SNL

I like Kanye West's song Love Lockdown, but his performance on SNL was bloody awful. I couldn't help but laugh as it looked very amateur and comical.

Apparently the Auto tuner machine malfunctioned which left him singing it all by himself (along with his backup singers). A tragic performance. It was good for a laugh though. At least we know he wasn't lip syncing.

I watched it for the hugh laurie appearance but I was left wondering, why cant americans do sketch comedy? with the exception of the newcasters there wasnt a funny joke in the whole show.

To be fair, I've seen some funny American sketches. Well, maybe just the one, it was a long time ago.

why cant americans do comedy?
There, I fixed the question.

I suppose someone could ask the question, why can't Australian's do sitcoms?

Actually, the whole point of Kanye's new album is that it is supposed to be done using the Auto-Tuner. If it messed up during the live performance, then it would screw everything up.

Kanye has admitted that he can't sing, which is why he never does. He gets guests to sing and he raps. But he figured he'd use the technology if it was there. Unfortunately, I guess the SNL producers messed up.

And American sketch comedy is great. Just the writers for SNL right now suck. I'm pretty sure you'd agree that SNL 10 years ago was hilarious.

But, I'm well aware that SNL can't compare to the consistency of Python or Fry and Laurie. But SNL has to be taken as a completely different show for every 'era' of writers.

"Cher Effect".

anyone needing or liking or using such effects shows clearly enugh how confident he is about his voice.

faulty logic.
kanye used cher effect throughout his whole song because he really cant sing.
john legend used it in his song also, therefore he cant sing.

it aint realy a try to be logical. it is my opinion. You are spot on though in guessing what i think of these "artists".

I'm siding with twoflower I think. The first time I heard The Cher Effect in Believe I thought it was an interesting technique and not a bad thing per se. But now, when we listen to our local "hip hop" station at work (we rotate stations so it isn't everyday) I notice the cher effect or some similar variation of voice distortion on a majority of the songs in their rotation.

You guys are talking about auto tune. From the wikki:

Auto-Tune is a proprietary audio processor created by Antares Audio Technologies that uses a phase vocoder to correct pitch in vocal and instrumental performances. It is used to disguise inaccuracies and mistakes and has allowed many artists to produce more precisely tuned recordings.

Auto-Tune is available as a plug-in for professional audio multi-tracking suites used in a studio setting and as a stand-alone, rackmount unit for live performance processing.[1] Auto-tune has become standard equipment in professional recording studios.[2]

i dont care what it is called, rgi :)

i only care what it means to me. It means "as soon as you hear this, throw away the CD / changte the channel / leave the club"

yes, i have left clubs and groups of friends waiting to get in by the sound of it. I'd rather sit home, drink a good wine and listen to real music. If my friends want to drag me in there, they are not that good friends after all.
