View Full Version : Why is HFP so frickin' scary?

I’m sure this is an invitation to derision, but I’m bored so I’ll post it anyway:
I recently headed to Outland for the first time with my level 60 warrior and was surprised at how freaking dangerous it was. I’m used to a zone being particularly death-inducing only if a character isn’t the appropriate level for it: of course Duskwood was terrifying when I tried it at level 16, so I went back to Westfall, leveled up, tried again, and found it no problem, because I was actually level-appropriate the second time.
Not so much with Hellfire Peninsula, it seems. From the Deathwhisperer at Legion Front to the wandering Fel Reaver, things are eating my lunch. And because they’re elites, coming back in a few levels is going to make absolutely no difference.
Granted, there are a few examples of this in Azeroth: Somnus roaming the skies of Swamp of Sorrows, and whatever elite dragon terrorizes people in Blasted Lands, but for the most part bosses are in areas you’d expect bosses to be and as long as you’re careful and the right level, no prob.
Also, I tend to only play solo, so I’ve got no back-up when I’m outmatched and I tend to grind a lot, so I’m wandering large areas of the zones rather than just going where the quests tell me to go. I’m sure those two things are making this worse, but that’s how I like to play.
I guess what I’m asking is, can I expect it to be like this all the time now that I’ve left Azeroth, or is HFP just an unusually scary place??
At least the Fel Reaver mauling was fast…
P.S. And I have done about 15 quests there and gotten some better gear as a result. But still. :ponder:
Well, on 10 characters questing in HFP, no Felreaver ever killed me, but in fact I killed 2 of them (for quests). They are freaking huge, make a noise and the ground shakes...how ppl die to them is beyond me.
But HFP is scary because of the intense mob respawns (Zeth Gor)and the craggy / hilly areas, adjusting the camera to see things is hard. Then there is all this fire / demon / fel orc theme - so all in all I agree..HFP is scary :)

naw it dies down after that. once you hit zangarmarsh, you'll find it very serene compared to hfp.
my advice would be to skip most of the HH quests and just get to Temple of Talhamat. Quest from there. then move on to Zanga. after hitting 61 or 61, go back to HH and finish up all the quests there. the mobs in zangarmarsh are around 61-62.

It's the place where the Legion's Armys are amassing to re-invade azeroth.... You want puppy dogs and hello kitty?

Hellfire was designed to be nonsnooze inducing for all those old level 60's who had the best gear possible. I mean, imagine if you'd been cutting edge before the xpac came out, and then go to Outlands and find..well... yawn, things you can slaughter in a heartbeat. What a let down. And Hellfire, especially, ranges in difficulty from side to side. Ranging all over it is definitely going to get you some problems.

I found the Area 52 environment scary, too. I was afraid I would fall off the land. It was better after I had a flying mount.
Heck, Blasted Lands scared me, too!

i think it is scray cause the mobs there have more life and hit harder than lvl 60 mobs in azeroth. They respawn faster and there are more of them, and then there are the fel reavers which seem to get to some people :)
It is a step up. But you will also step up gear wise, most notably you will get much more stamina.

if you survive
I levelled to 61 in EPL before heading back to outland
it's cool that it's scary, by comparison Nagrand is a walk in a national park
And it's not the fel reavers by themselves that get you, it's them + the other two things you were already fighting

With the new graphical changes that came with WoTLK, you can see the fel reavers coming from the other side of the zone (with a decent pc of course).

Too true.
Also, once you quest a bit, and get some green outland gear, you'll notice a difference. Like others have said- it's scary because a) they hit harder, b) spawn faster and c) are ALWAYS in groups of 4/5 ...they never come alone!
It does get better! I died A LOT when i started to quest there. I would have my music up, be watching a movie, turn back to the screen where I was killing a boar...and POW...death by fel reaver...I mean, for their size, they can be quite stealth like if you're not paying close attention.

Then you get to SHadowmoon Valley and want to cry T.T

A tip... if you have decent gold, look for green level 57-60 Outland gear. Don't spend tons on it - 5-20g per piece MAX. But on my spriest I did this and it made a lot of differnce. You'll get some of this stuff as random drops off mobs, but if you have gold spending 50-70 of it on 3 or 4 pieces with class appropriate stats can help a lot.
If you just went "Are you insane!? 50-70 GOLD??" you don't have enough to do this - so don't stretch yourself. It's money that will be wasted in some sense because you'll replace most of the stuff you buy by 62-63... but it can make those initial levels easier.
