Hello,
I played World of Warcraft years ago. I still have the Reign of Chaos battle chest. I'm used to playing it on my system. Now, from my understanding the new WOW game is played online.
So if I go out and buy the NEW BattleChest I will be playing online. Is there a fee to playing online? If so, How much? Is there a way to gain points or something so you don't have to pay for it?
I'm just trying to decide if its worth getting the game or not. I loved playing the original game on my PC but I've beaten it years ago. Not sure if I want to pay a ton of month each month on a single game...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the game is played online.
the first month is free.
each month after that is $14.99.
if you pay for more, say 6 months, its a bit cheaper PER month.
WoW takes place a few years after the end of Warcraft III.
You control a character now. its a totally different game.
go on youtube and type in wow and see what the game looks like.
there are three ways to "not" pay cash for wow.
1. refer a friend. if your friend pays for two months of wow, you get a month free. do it 20 times and you're set.
2. scroll of resurrection. if someone you know played wow, and wants to play again, you can "refer" him also. again, two months, and you get a free month.
3. ask your parents. yea i know. technically there's money involved, but at least its not your money.
i dont know what "a ton of month each month" is.

A ton of money it isn't. Anymore, you'd pay the same for a dinner for two unless it was a cheapie fast food resturant.

You played Warcraft, the rts game. World of Warcraft is not an rts game, it's an mmorpg (Massively multiplayer online roleplaying game). This means you will make your own character based on the warcraft games and do with it what you will, along with 11 million of your friends. There is no set storyline in World of Warcraft, and you do not switch from human storyline to orc storyline to elf storyline. Just remember, the playstyle between on computer rts and server based mmorpg is quite a bit different. (I suggest you get a trial to take a look and see if you're still interested)
In the US- the basic cost is 14.99 per month. You can cut that by buying more time at once, ie..paying for three months instead of one. That is the only legally approved way by Blizzard to cut the cost, not counting the referal ways as mentioned by the others.

LOL, yeah that was a typo... Ok so $14.99 a month isn't so bad. It'll come to a little under $180 a year if I pay for more months in advance.
It does kind of suck going out and buying the game and then being forced to continue paying for the game each month inorder to play it.
Does the game continually change? Just wondering why people are so willing to pay each month.
Anyway, thanks for the info..

Yeah, I think I'll have to do the trial version before putting aside some $$$ for this game.
So basically, I will develop a character and stick within my storyline. Do I get a chance to interact with other characters from different storylines? If i'm an Orc will I run into elves? Are there missions in the game where I have to go find someone or something..?
I guess the trial version will be the best way for me to figure all this out.
Thanks

Compared to the same game world as given in the rts games, Azeroth in Wow is immensely huge. Wow classic gives you the entirety of Azeroth (Lordaeron and the Eastern Kingdoms) and Kalimdor. The logistics involved in some of the group feats are pretty big, and because of that, even though I have played Wow for three years, last month was the first time I've gotten to do Ahn'Quiraj 40 man run. There are still parts of the raids in the first expansion pack I've never seen, and it gives you the entirety of the orc homeworld (well, what's left of it) to stomp around on. The game world itself is pretty much set, but the interaction and ability to get all of it done can take a long, long time. There are special events, such as holidays, which change, and new content comes on a regular basis, with content patches and new expansions. The latest expansion gives you the chance to journey to Northrend.

In a way the game does continually change.
First, keep in mind that WoW (for the time being anyway) has no definite "ending". There is no point where you can stop and say, "well I beat it, now what". Some players see all they care to see....some get bored....some set their own "endings" (such as doing every dungeon raid available), but most of us continue to keep exploring, earning, crafting, raiding, yes even fishing and cooking.
One reason we keep on paying is because it's cheaper than buying a new $35 or $45 PC game every (or every 2nd) month.
It's also cheaper than a lot of other social activities. Some nights for instance if I don't feel like really "playing", I can still log on and chat via the game with several of my RL friends. At $0.50 a day, that's much cheaper than a 2 or 3 hour long distance phone call.
But what I meant by "continually changing" is that Blizzard continues to add to the game. These additions come in the form of patches. Sometimes a patch is nothing more than a series of bug fixes. But other times...like at certain seasonal events, they will add in extra quest and game content. For instance we are currently enjoying the Lunar Festival. There will be another event near Valentine's Day (with the appropriately related themes). Another favorite is Brewfest, with drunken ram races and such.
Most players feel that all of this "little bit extra" attraction and the continued game support, is well worth the ~$15 / month.
Don't think of it as 1 game that you continue to pay $15 a month to play. Think of it more in terms of a $0.50 a day cover charge to go to a "place" where you can choose to play one or more from a dozen different types of games all rolled into one big world. :cloud9:

Once I finished the trial version I can make my decision. I'll have to put aside some time to really get involved with the game. I guess the money goes to developing all the new patches/updates. If there are 12million+ users online the company must be making a killing. How sweet it must be... =)

sir, please try to group with someone, such as in the recruit a friend program...both of you will zoom up in levels, and will be able to thus get to 80 much more quickly than if you did it alone...
Pick someone who has a compatible play time...and who wants the same server and faction (alli/horde).
I'll volunteer to help, if you need someone to recruit you...you need to be recruited before using the CD key from your purchased software....
good luck!

That may be the best explanation of WoW that I've heard and is a great answer to why it's worth paying for month after month. /steal idea.

If you're an orc you'll run into two different kinds of elves. Just like in the rts, there is the factional split between the Horde and the Alliance, so a lot of the player elves you will run into (Tyrande's Night elves) will be hostile to your Horde orc. There are also the Sin'dorei, or blood elves, who are high elves who have sided with the Horde. As an orc you would have free roam of all Horde controlled territories and cities. However, as a proud orc of the Horde, Alliance controlled territories and cities will be hostile to you. Doesn't mean you can't go to most of them, just means you have to be careful.
The game has thousands upon thousands of quests, everything from bring me my hot coffee to blow the mana bomb up in the middle of the bad elven town. Finding lost people is certainly used as well.

let me say this... $180 per year is a lot less than... a lot of things i pay every month. so whether the monthly fee for WoW is a lot or a little really depends on your perspective... or that its relative.
