View Full Version : What do you think of trade at WOW nowadays?

Nowadays, more and more people are buying or selling gold at WOW.
Though Bilzzard has taken some actions on this, it could never end it.
So what's your opinion about this?

My opinion ?
Well, for starters I think you have no way of knowing if "more and more" people are buying or selling gold unless you....
a. Work for Blizzard, or
b. Run a major gold selling service and have seen a growth spurt in your business.
Based on my own personal experience, I've recently seen fewer in-game spams for gold selling, encountered fewer bots and seen a decrease in the number of "my-account-got-hacked-and-all-my-gold-is-gone" posts on this forum. That, plus the lack of any recent major bannings by Blizzard would lead me to believe that there are FEWER gold sellers/buyers operating, not more.
Indeed, it is so easy to earn gold in-game since the expansion that I can't see how anyone could even profit from selling it.
Which leads me to your next claim and my opinion that it's quite possible to end it. It's just a matter of diminishing returns. Blizzard could do all sorts of additional things (including legal action through the courts) to continue to battle the situation, but at some point they have to weigh the costs vs. the benefits.
But, if you really wanted my opinion on "this".....
I think it's one of the more useful but often misleading 4 letter words.
It is sometimes hard to understand just what "this" is, or what "this" means.
On the other hand, I really prefer "that". "That" is a word you can really get a grip on. Everyone knows what you're talking about when you say "that". Not like "this", where people go "Huh?". What's "this"?
But when understanding comes, it's "Ohhhhh....you mean THAT".

I don't know how gold could be easy to come by. Sure, my guy in Outland (level 66 warrior) gets better drops and loot, sure, he sells every bit of mineral and herb he gathers on the AH. But little of what he takes in is wearable (it's either something useless like cloth or leather or too low a level) and it sells for a pittance to a vendor or on the AH. The AH is woefully bad on my server, so I usually vend it after a couple of tries at 'blue' prices. And training costs a fortune....... so I'd say he breaks even. I am amazed when people talk about buying epic mounts and the like. I don't think I'll ever be able to buy one - it is impossible even now to arm and armour him like I'd like to.

I'm sorry if I'm wrong (wouldn't be the first time), but my cynical nature is waiting for the followup post with an advert for a gold-seller site.
My opinion on the whole deal is that
1) It's bloody stupid to buy gold
2) It's virtually impossible to not have enough gold for the content you're in
3) Even so, oodles of gold won't make a huge difference as the important stuff is BoP anyway.
4) Blizzard should be more agressive in suing and banning goldsellers.
5) Even if it were legal (ie. Blizzard would start selling the gold themselves), it'd still be pretty bloody stupid due to the previously mentioned points.
I couldn't care less. I use spam blockers and don't buy gold. Everything else is Blizzards business unless I meet ppl in guild / party / raid that do this, in which case I will slap them silly.....

In TBC, I felt like I would never be able to get an epic flying mount myself, but in WotLK, levling up to 80 gives you around 3-4k gold it self, and at 80 I did quests for LoreMaster of Northrend acheivment, when I was done I had epic flyer + 1k gold. What seems impossible now is to get a vendor mammoth or chopper (I'm pretty casual).
So when you hit northrend, you'll see them golds ;)

Where's your proof that what you say is true? There does seem a push on my server from Gold Sellers at the moment but I can't see how spamming every global channel is likely to win over customers. In fact the result seems to be quite the reverse. From the responses to spam that I hear, people don't seem to want to give gold sellers any incentive to continue spamming /trade. Funny that.
Though Bilzzard has taken some actions on this, it could never end it.
Again I have to ask, what are you basing your assumption on? That they haven't ended it thus far is true. However I suspect that in the future our anti-spam addons will become more sophisticated and Blizzard will take further steps to make gold-spam more trouble than it's worth. They might even take a leaf out of EverQuest's book and restrict trial accounts to specific zones, making it a lot harder for gold-spammers to operate.
So what's your opinion about this?
Well I've heard people mention both This and That but personally I have to stick with the Other.

If the recent spurt of gold for sale banner ads on this site is any indication of how well the gold for sale companies are doing, I'd say that the OP is uninformed, and that the amount of gold sold has plummeted to amazing and awesome lows.
$3 (USD) for 1000 gold? A year to a year and a half ago, it was like $25 (USD) for 1000 gold.

Sort of like real life. When I get promoted/win the lottery/inherit my unknown aunt's fortune, then sky's the limit. I am hopeful of improvement eventually (you're not the first to tell me this) but for now I just enjoy the game and don't worry about things I can't have. I do wish the AH would improve. It used to be not too bad, but has been awful for almost a year now.

Northend Dailies are worth about 500g/day between quest rewards and loot.
More so if you are friendly with the frenzyheart and get Northern Pearls/Sierns Tears.
3 Quest in SB, 6 Son's of Hodir, 3 Ebon blade, 3 Wyrmrest Accord, many many on Skybreaker, 2 from walrus guys, daily cooking, K-3 has at least 1.
Add to this gathering income.
One good thing I think Blizzard has done is to limit BOE stuff to mediocre. At this point, based on armory, lootrank, be.imba, etc. There is nothing in the AH I can use gear wize. I still need consumables but dailies more then cover those expenses. The items I need to help my character are either BOP drops from 10/25 man instances or available from Quartermasters once I get my rep up. My new boots were less then 21g. Add about 200g for enchants <icewalker> and gem <Runed Scarlet Ruby> and you still have not broken the bank.

That's great, but I'd like more BOE stuff, so I could at least try to sell it. My guy has perhaps 55 gold at the best of times. A lot of times he's wearing and carrying greens about three levels below his. 200g is something I'm not familiar with. And I truly don't know what else I can do. I sell every bit of gathered mineral and herbs, put whatever I can on the AH at a reasonable price, discount it once or twice when it doesn't sell (and it rarely does sell) and finally haul it off to a vendor. But I remain hopeful since everyone tells me it gets a lot better after about 70.

post your ores now. tonight. at about 90% of the usual price. you'll get it sold over the weekend. you do use 48hour mode right? do not post your ores on friday. they will get undercut quickly. either you play the undercutting game and lower your prices, or you wait. i wait til tuesday. why? because this is when auctions expire for everyone who posted on sunday. post yours on tuesday night at a bit higher price.
also, sell your ores in stacks of either 5, 10, or 20. reason being JC'ers can prospect 5 at a time. i dont know why you're having such bad luck. i recently made a dk in a new server and made him a miner/herber. he's at 325 mining and almost 400 herbing. from all the ores, stones, gems and herbs gathered, i've netted about 2k gold.

Another thought, instead of just vendoring the items you have not sold send em to an enchanter to DE as the mats are typically worth more then the item.
And for MANY MANY of the green drops it does not pay to even try to AH it as the deposits can quickly eat up all your profits.
I use auctioneer to tell me how much items would vend for and how they are selling at the AH. It also tells you the deposits. If the deposits are more then the difference between vendor and AH prices I would just vend it or have it DE'd
If you are in a guild then you should have at least one guildie that DEs for free.
Sometimes less is more. Currently on Alliance side of Antonidas thorium is selling for 35g/stack while Saronite is selling around 20g/stack. With a bunch of Death Knights leveling professions even copper is selling like hot cakes.

This might be a record for back to back posting.
And to actually contribute something to the thread:
On Monday nights (or Tuesday nights in the EU), look for popular items that have a low minimum bid and less than 24 hours left on the auction. The auctions are going to end during maintenance so you should pick up at least some of them for well below what they're actually worth. Then you can turn around and sell them for a profit.

Rachel, if you want to quote multiple posts, then do the following:
Next to where the "Reply" button is, there's a little "+" button. Hitting that will change it to a "-". Click that for every post you want to quote, then hit reply on one of the posts. That will put all of the posts you want to quote in one post.
Then, you can just type the individual replies in between two posts:
Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
I believe Dr. Blah's theory on the relativity of the use of the word "blah" is foolish and misguided. Prof. Yada-Yada's laws on the use of the word "yada" are much more founded.
Yada yada yada yada yada yada yada.
You my friend, are quite wise.
Just a heads up...

Well, From 60-70, you should get around 1000g just from questing...From 70-80, you'll get at least twice that...
What are you spending gold on?

one thing to remember if you do plan on selling on the weekends, you do not have to undercut everyone, but you will have to lower your prices from that of weekday prices. i've found that ores and herbs go fast on weekends that those who need to sell their items do not need to undercut by so much, as many of the lower priced stacks will be bought within the hour, then more people will list and those stacks will be bought. during the weekends i usually sell my stacks for a bit more than the lowest price, but not too low either. i find those sell out before several others decide to post their ores/herbs, thus causing the cycle to repeat. for weekdays though, its a lot different as you dont have too many people trying to undercut anyone, you end up with a seller's market. there are many people, who do not play during the weekdays. if you cannot, at least take about 15 minutes out of your day to just post your auctions. you'll have mail waiting for you when you log on during the weekends.
for your drops, disenchanting would be the easier alternative. i used to have a guildie DE my drops until i got one of my alts to learn enchanting. listing mats in the AH is free. so do that.
at your level, the best thing to do to make money would be to go back to azeroth and gather herbs and mine minerals. PM me for what i think is the best place.

1000g from questing????? I begin to think I'm not playing the same game as you! An evening of turning in quests gets perhaps 40g, a few BOP items that are 'wrong' (leather or cloth or mail or lower level) and the herbs and minerals I've gathered en route. Maybe the occasional BOE drop, but mostly greens and worth maybe 10g at most. 10g that is, if they sell. So with those I'm going to give the DE thing a try. Can't recall what adamantite sells for on my AH but it's not a lot and there's masses of it on sale. I spend gold on buying him (if I can) decent arms and armour, repairs (big expense there and I suppose it might be less could I equip him better), and training. But don't misunderstand me. I love the game and even if I don't make gold, that's OK, I think. Disappointing, when I talk to people who are stuffed with gold and looking for ways to spend it. And I have to admit more than one I've encountered admits frankly to buying it, saying that they feel somehow justified and proud. I wouldn't do that. So I'm happy to just keep playing and hope that in future maybe things will get better.

Molly - keep in mind that you do not -need- a lot of gold at your level.
The only thing I'm in doubt of, would be the training fee for riding skill + horsey at level 30, instead of 40. Personally, I bought my first mount at level 20 and had 100g to spare, but I realise that won't be for everyone.
What you need gold for is
1) training fee
2) possibly a small repair fee
Everything else is optional, unless you are a hunter that needs bullets and pet food.
It's only by the time you hit the end game that all of a sudden enchants start ramping up, respecs pop up, wipe-costs come and rampage your wallet and you'd like that epic flyer as well.
Even mounts are affordable with a wee bit of afford at the level you're supposed to get them. Maybe not the epic flyer, but the normal flyer will most definitely be in range.

Well, using your own numbers, you make 40g a night just questing, and you have items and minerals also...How long is that? 2-3 hours? I figure an average of 3g or more a quest...13 quests is around 40g.
So, in ten days (twenty hours) you have 400g, then, right, not including the bunches of minerals and BOP items??
What are you spending gold on? (This is where you and I may differ ALOT...I spend very little gold, unless I'm raiding.)

This is where your problem is. For leveling quest rewards are more than enough. If you see something very cheap on ah, snap it up, but otherwise its a waste of money to buy gear you outlevel fast. And when you've outleveled it you need to buy new gear and there goes even more money.
Until you reach the level cap and actually need to start collecting good gear, just stop doing that. If you're dying a lot then try to pay more attention to things like adds, pats and so on to ensure you only need to fight one on one, and getting shiny ah blues wont help with that.

I agree with this.. I was wearing lvl 20-30 greens with a few blues for the most part on my lvl 59 druid when I went into outland yesterday. It was a little annoying at first, but the quest rewards were huge upgrades for me. More importantly, by disnechanting all the green items I got from 30-60, I made a nice chunk of change to buy my epic mount... probably going to do that this evening. Also, the DE mats from the outland greens seem to be worth even more. I would highly recommend the following two rules to help yourself:
1) resist the temptation to buy new gear all the time
2) get some source of disenchanting and sell the mats.
