View Full Version : Defias and Murlocs, alas

I always rather thought that both Defias and Murlocs would be carried on right through the game, becoming bigger and better and more cunning and dangerous all the way (they're pretty good mobs, after all). But it seems as if they end with Dustwallow and appear no more. Disappointing.

There are at least Gorlocs in Northrend, an evolutionary development of the Murloc.

Good. I rather miss them - now I've got something to look forward to. That's the bunch you strike up some sort of bargain with, aren't they?

There is also a horde side quest in Zangarmarsh from Swamprat Post to introduce some murlocs into the Daggerfen area.

With some of them, yes. There's a group them in the north of the Borean Tundra, for whom you do some quests and will have to kill some other members of their clan who went bad.

There's a group of them in Scholazar Basin, who are one half of the faction war that's going on there - compare it to Aldor/Scryer, you can either side with them (Oracles) or with the wolvar clan (Frenzyheart) and you'll get daily quests that'll also involve killing the other faction.

There's also some serving as trash mobs in Gun'drak, an instance in Zul'drak - right before the 'secret' boss who is an oversized Gorloc.

Glad to hear it, because overall I prefer them (infuriating as they are with that 'murgl, murgl, murgl') to Defias. I still think, though, that the Defias could have been taken much further. They seemed to be a well-organised faction.

There are murlocs all through the game. Anyone who's survived Morogrim Tidewalker in Serpentshrine Cavern can attest that the Murloc is alive and well in Outlands...swarms...and swarms...and swarms of them.

There are also murloc, and the undead variety of them, murghuls, in Northrend.

As for the Defias, they are an area specific organization with one driving goal...get back at Stormwind. This isn't going to take them to Outlands as an organized attack force, or to Northrend.

Personally, I wouldn't see it as too weird to have them in Northrend... Stormwind's main forces are currently there, and so why shouldn't they be trying to weaken them so that the Lich King can take control over their camps, therefore making Stormwind weakened... Which of course, it could've easily been included as "Defias was taken over by the Lich King's grasp, so they're attacking everyone" etc.

Could be, I just find there to be a big gulf between "Pay us, damnit, just like you promised!" And "We're going to go over to the Lich King and drag down humanity." As written in lore, the Defias only want to get paid for their work. They aren't the bad guys, they're the terribly, terribly annoyed guys doing some regrettable things.

The Defias are finished. You kill Van Cleef in the deadmines. The stocks are full of Defias until you the hero clean it out. The ones in Dustwallow are just remnants of the organization who had been on loan to Onyxia to help kidnap the king.

(incidently it was not the king who refused to pay but the nobles)

There's no quest text to indicate it, but it can be expected that the organization falls apart after you've finished with them.

I rather think that the remainder clung together, strengthened and enraged by what had happened (as has happened frequently in real life) and eager to offer their services to the Lich King and his allies as a means to revenge. I'd like to see a level 70 Defias elite, I think.

I play horde, which means I have little to do with the Defias. I do however think the murloc are more than a little overdone.

Overdone? You mean as in put on a spit and roasted too long over a fire? Ah, no, I see what you mean now..... Love 'em or hate 'em, Murlocs are unique and make worthwhile adversaries. A lot nicer than the multitudes of Ghouls, with their funny bustling run/walk.

Doing the death knight starting chain has given me a soft spot in my heart for ghouls. I mean...they called me Poppa! And the joy of running up to New Avalon surrounded by the little buggers, I was in heaven. (Arthas, if you can hear me, I want to come home now. This wasn't my idea. It was Mograine, and he was a pansy.)

Goodness knows they need all the friends they can get....... Ghouls and skellies give me the creeps. When I'm somewhere like either of the Plaguelands, I can't help thinking how the place must smell. Or Duskwood.

As annoying as murlocs are, they made you think sometimes. The darn things. You could never get one by itself. Ok, you could but it was almost impossible. I like going back and killing them for the fun of it.

I thought doing that was my guilty secret. I especially love dropping into Theramore and going to wipe out that whole island of 'em down the coast.

I never had a problem with my murloc fin soup being over done. It was fairly tasty and provided a nice boost for its level.

It presented one of those strange contradictions in terms that can be found in the game, though. They are Humanoids, seem to have a simple sort of civilisation, live in villages and a societal setting, have what appear to be religious icons around them, yet we can eat them or fashion armour from them. Other furry and finny creatures, though, don't offer the same options.

The defias chain led into the kidnapped official (King) which, after a small pause was picked up by the Onxyia chain and resloved the question of why Stormwind kept refusing calls for help from it's subject lands. Since the King has returned, it has now been resolved and is closed in the comic.
