The main addition is being able to quest and level in new areas, and beyond level 60.

Several new instances, but you may not find enough people leveling to go through them when you are level appropriate for the instances.

also, it makes 2 new races available, Blood Elf for Horde and Draenei for Alliance.
Lastly, there is a new profession, jewel crafting, that you can use.

You can postpone buying it unless you wanna play a Blood Elf or Draenei.

You will have PLENTY of time before you can even enter the levels/regions of the Burning Crusade, so I'd advise that unless the money is trivial for you, wait on the expansion until you are nearer to level 58.

Also, you should know that most people are on the expansion after that, Wrath of the Lich King...so if you want to continue all the way to the top end (and over half of the time spent in wow is by people at max level), then be advised you'll need both expansions.

Haha.. I know, right? I remember when I first started playing and thinking that this is pretty cool. Then I hit "M" for the map.. The only thing I could think of was "There is no way I am going to be traveling all over this map"...

Then realizing that the game does not really start until you are max level.. /sigh

I've earned a "talent point"? What's that? Good times....good times.

Mine was "I heard that there are these bat looking things to get you around the map...How do I get one?"

Of course, it was "go to a gryphon master"....and when I did that I said "The gryphon master hates me...he won't let me fly anywhere....something about not having any connections..."

LMAO...that was July 2005, and many level 70+'s, and one level 80 ago.

Lol, that's one of the first things I show to people...

I first show them a far-sighted vista, then I show on the zone map what they've just seen. Then I zoom out to continent view, then to world view, then to universe view. They usually get the picture :tongue.

Same here! I downloaded the game via official site so had no manual to help. Had real trouble talking/whispering for the first few levels until someone helped. Still took a while though :)

I can also remember same person saying "lets go to Ironforge" (after the initial confusion with IF!) and me replying "no need, theres a forge here in Kharanos that I use."

And then going to Ironforge and being quite blown away and spending hours there running around and falling in the lava pits.

getting back on topic a bit there. as someone else said, unless you want to make a blood elf or draenei then there's no rush to get the expansions. the first time you can use any of the content as a human character is at level 35 when you get access to the burning crusade enchantments which are more powerful than the ones before. if this doesn't concern you then I'd wait untill level 50 or so.

about the next expansion after "the burning crusade" ("wrath of the lich king"), if you get that at the same time (around level 50 or so) then you will have access to the Death Knight class, the first hero class of the game, which becomes available once you reach level 55 on any character. of course, you don't need to get wrath of the lich king before level 70 but its still nice to have.

Ah, the cry of the jaded. It's not true. The game starts when you click accept, and the journey to max level is part of the wonder. As a jaded old raider, I'll say this is not true. The game does not start at max level. Nor does it end at max level. It just changes, and not always for the better.
